Me: I have a passable desktop setup suitable for a wide range of headphones and IEMs, so I only really need "okay" sound on the go. I'm not even going out much, if at all. And so, I only really need a $30 Jcally JM40 dongle that I have now for on-the-go purposes. Also me after watching: Gotta keep my eyes peeled for when the E1DA 9038D goes on sale lol. While I do really like the Sparrow (balanced), the issue with the clicks and pops and the price point at $200 dollars makes it ultimately a regrettable purchase. I much prefer the iKKo Zerda, it's just synergizes with all my lower impedance headphones. The sound is more "artificial" from the Zerda, no question, but it's just a price to performance monster. I just wrote Earmen asking what the process would be for getting those replacement cables for us early adopters. I'll update this comment when they respond. Awesome video, really appreciate you taking the time to fondle as many dongles as you could get your hands on!
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
Haha. Happy to fondle the dongles for you! I hope (and expect) that EarMen will sort it out for you. My unit is noise free these days. You're right though that the ITM01 is brilliant for the price. I just received the xDuoo Link which is priced similarly. It's a shame it didn't get here for the fondle, but I'll put it up against the ITM01 soon...

@@PassionforSound How did you eliminate the EMI noise? I've had my Sparrow for well over a year and I can't seem to resolve this issue. I received the replacement cable from Earmen which didn't fix the problem and I also purchased a high quality shielded OEOTG Digital Cable from OE Audio but that hasn't worked either.
@dasninjastix
@dasninjastix 2 года назад
@@PassionforSound I think I scooped up the Xduoo Link v1 for about $40 dollars US when it was first released. it'll occasionally disconnect on its own, regardless of if the cable is jostle it'll just stop playback and have to be reconnected. Sound-wise I like it a lot, and unlike the Zerda or the Sparrow, I never get any clicks, pops, and snaps. It seems like phone USB inputs aren't great at handling dongles that siphon power. All my dongles seem to work flawlessly with my laptop but between 3 phones ever single one has connection problems. I need to try a battery based one but the last thing I need is another dongle.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
That's interesting. I've found the opposite - that many of these dongles don't play nice with my laptop. I get volume control issues (like full volume from nowhere!) and one of the ones in this review started skipping tracks on me (can't recall which one). It might vary from phone to phone and computer to computer

This may be a bizarre question but which little dongle made you "chair dance" . For example I have 2 desktop amps a Mjolnir2 and a THX789 with the Burson power adapter. The Mjolnir2 has a tendency to make me "chair dance" while the THX789 has excellent punch and impact great for Electronic and EDM. I really like both but in the end I usually prefer the one that makes me want to wiggle and lose myself in the moment.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
It's a great question! It's one of the reasons I love the NextDrive Spectra X - it's got a really engaging sense of drive and rhythm. So that's probably my answer, but the EarMen dongles are excellent and enjoyable too as it's the A&K. I'd probably avoid the S9 for danceability and might take the S3 Pro over the Ikko on that metric too although the Ikko is more dynamic while the S3 Pro is a little warmer which can help with the fun factor

Any plans on testing out the Violectric Chronos? I have to replace my LG phone soon so I've been learning about these dongles looking for a compact dac, I'm leaning towards the EarMen sparrow from the AQ Cobalt and thinking about the new one EarMen is coming out with priced around $300 and it has it's own power supply... I'm not quite an audiophile, but I can get balanced cables for my Shure 215's and the rest of my headphones are 3.5 so I've been going back and forth trying to pick the "right" one lol Have companies made U shaped usb-C adaptors specifically for these dacs to pair onto phones?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
It's unlikely I'll get to try the Chronos - sorry! The EarMen team are certainly excited about the new DAC, but I don't know much about it yet other than the fact that it's coming. I believe there are some short, u-shaped USB cables around. Maybe try searching Amazon and/or Ali Express for "short OTG cable" or something similar and see what you find

Hi Lachlan, your channel has informed me on the purchase of Hifiman Sundara, Ikko OH10 IEM, and Earmen Eagle DAC for the best value audio setup I would need. Thank you! Enjoyed this dongle DAC comparison too :) If I ever wanted to spend more money in the future, would adding Schiit Asgard 3 & Schiit Bifrost 2 be a mind blowing leap to invest in? (Currently use a £129 Audioengine D1 from my PC).

@joshbarron3
@joshbarron3 2 года назад
@@PassionforSound I almost convinced myself that Asgard & Bifrost would be a worthwhile purchase, but for me, as tempting as it is to get carried away with wanting more, I struggle to believe that it would make that much of a difference in the enjoyment of music so decided this is my end game (for now ha). Hifiman Sundara £299 (now £269 on amazon) excellent - would recommend to anyone, even someone that was just a general music listener, none audiophile. You want good music? Save up, it's worth it. Audioengine D1 DAC £129, small on the desk, volume pot seperate from Windows to adjust volume, pre-out to speakers that mutes when headphones are plugged in, AK4396 DAC. Owned it for 6 years. Ikko OH10 IEM bought at a good deal for £140 & Earmen Eagle DAC £109 for top value portable listening. Total I've spent = £677. Asgard 3 + Bifrost 2 = £945. Colossal money! I will continue to enjoy your in-depth videos that have also helped me understand that as you go up in price point, you get small percentage improvements that do add up, but for me likely at too high a cost when I already enjoy the sound I've got now plenty. Cheers!

I A/B tested KA3 on the 3,5mm output vs my E1DA 9038D and Fiio M11 pro. KA3 was so far behind E1da it’s no competition. The bass i heavier on KA3, but with less punch, less control and less texture. The dinamics, control, speed, punch, details and soundstage of E1da absolutely crush ka3, but maybe the 4,4mm is another story. E1da 9038d is not for off my M11 pro overall, the dinamics are a little better on m11, soundstage is bigger and better, and m11 pro sounds more natural, but e1da is way more close to m11 than ka3 on 3,5mm is from e1da. Testing was done with Fiio FH7, Hifiman He4xx and also using the dongles as a dac for my active speakers.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
I've got reviews of the old BTR5 and Shanling UP4 which might provide some indication. When using wired, devices like the BTR5 can outperform many dongles because of the internal battery power, but they're bulkier so it's a trade-off.
@ionescugeorge2003
@ionescugeorge2003 2 года назад
E1da 9038D outperforms the old and new BTR5 connected via USB, it’s really no contest. E1da is way more controlled, more detailed, has a wider and deeper soundstage, better layering. Even a BTR3k sounds more natural because it has a akm chip, but it’s a must to use the balanced output.

@@PassionforSound The question bothering me is following; Lets say, my soon arriving Fiio KA3 is been said to be detailed, powerfull and all the other adjectives they can find for. But the same stuff is said about devices like lets say Schiit Magni and co. too. So can you say , all this tiny stuff been produced this days do beat or at leased pull equal to desktop solutions? I got IEMs and a Hifiman with 37 Ohms 97db, super easy to drive and this little babys can drive 300 Ohm. Why still buying expensive stuff when this incredible devices do 32Bit 768khz, MQA, DSD512 and got also balanced out put?? You knwo what I m saying?
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
I understand now - thank you. As you go up in size and price (i.e. a desktop device vs a dongle), the quality does improve because of the ability to improve things like power supplies and output stages which both use capacitors and larger capacitors can provide better quality due to being less constrained by size requirements. Also, having separate power supplies rather than using USB power will also improve the sound. There is a lot that goes into making great sounding products and the specs and measurements don't tell the whole story. Hopefully that makes sense.
@memoli801
@memoli801 2 года назад
@@PassionforSound I wish I could give you a heart too! I have been told that the power supply can have more impact on sound quality than a DAC it self. I was hoping for Hidizs S9 pro to be in the mix but unfortunately it wasn't. Hoping a review for you for it soon. But as a side question; I will get HD6xx and SMSL-SP200 amp soon but I mainly listen on my PC and since PC's audio might not be good, so I was wondering how would a PC + a Dongle DAC => SMSL-SP200 => HD6xx set up would be better in terms of better sound quality as oppose to PC=>SMSL=>HD6xx? I am just looking for a cheapest option for DAC (only if it significantly improves decoding over PC's generic decoding) that can go well with SMSL-SP200+HD6xx. Hoping for helpful reply! And of course keep up the good work!

Hi Alex, the addition of a DAC will definitely help so I'd recommend getting something like the E1DA, Eagle, etc. (S9 Pro is probably a good option, but I'm yet to try it). As for the amp, if you haven't bought it yet, I'd recommend against the SP200. Something like a Topping L30 would be a better choice.

Alright so here's a bit of an update on the problem described below. I'm not sure why this has worked and continues to work but it does. I bought a USB C splitter off Amazon Australia which allows me to charge my S21 Ultra while listening to music by way of the Hidizs S9 Pro dongle. No more worries about battery drain. So, I plugged the splitter into the phone, plugged the USB C cable provided by Hidizs into the splitter, plugged the other end of that cable into the S9 Pro and bingo green light comes on...

The Eagle may sound good, but with that USB-A connector it doesn't look like an ideal device for use with a phone. Modern phones have USB-C connectors, so you'll need an adapter to plug it in, and a straight-up adapter rather than a cable would leave you with a big thing sticking awkwardly out of your phone. It would be great for use with a laptop, however, except one of the new models that only has USB-C ports. I have a HiDizs S3 Pro that I bought from the crowdfunding campaign and I've been happy with it. Its tiny size makes it easy to throw in my purse and carry all the time; it lives there along with a pair of IEMs. It may have ranked on the bottom in your test but it's great for my use case. Would I like the ITM01 better? Maybe. I know you liked the sound better, but it is larger. I don't think it's enough of an upgrade to justify the cost of switching.

The Eagle comes with a USB-C to female USB-A cable so no worries there, but I agree it's not as convenient as the USB-C native devices. The S3 Pro is certainly great for its price if you're looking for that compact, do-it-all (incl. MQA) device

Don't phones with USB-C ports already have a DAC? I'm seeing both external DACs and "adapters" on Amazon. I'm curious to hear a shootout on something like a Pixel 6 Pro, wherein we get to hear A/B audio from an adapter vs one of these powered DACs. That's truly the only way to know if something like this is worth it. Adapters only cost $10.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 2 года назад
The phones don't have any DACs if there's no 3.5mm socket. The adapters actually have tiny chips built in that provide decoding of the digital signal. Basically anything that plugs into the USB socket on a phone and doesn't have external power from a wall outlet or a battery like a Mojo 2 or Colibri should be considered comparable.
2 года назад
All phones do have an internal DAC to drive the speakers. Some phones with USB-C support a mode where the internal DAC output is made available on the USB-C connector. For those you just need a passive adapter with a 3.5mm headphone jack. I once had a LeEco Le S3 phone that worked with that type of dongle, and they provided one with the phone. But only a minority of USB-C phones support that mode. It does not work with my Essential Phone or my Samsung Galaxy S21, and I know it also does not work with the Google Pixel series. For most current USB-C phones you need an active dongle with a DAC to drive wired headphones. The Essential Phone came with its own dongle (which also works on other phones), but most phones do not.

The Apple can be converted to a regular usb connection if you buy the usb c version and it’s tiny and cheap. I also don’t really get the value of these things. Just can’t imagine a reason I’d want one of these dongles.

It all depends on your needs. I can't afford to go and buy every possible option for review (even the $10) ones as the channel has previously only just started to break even financially. On top of that, what is a reference to you won't be a reference to everyone. Finally, the Qudelix 5k might be great (I'm yet to try one), but it's a very different type of device and form factor - it's bigger and bulkier, and is designed more for Bluetooth use than wired (even though it can do both). This roundup was about those products that are designed to go inline with earphones and be small enough that you don't really notice then. The 5k doesn't quite fit that bill.
