There are some egrets on the property right behind our land and I can see them flying around. Boy, do I enjoy standing outside and looking at them. They are so beautiful.
I visited the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, where I assume this was shot, in April. I didn't see the green at the base of the beaks, but I did see the breeding plumage. I saw a snowy egret with pink at the base of its beak, rather than yellow, which I assume is the same kind of thing.
Its good to know we actually cared back then that the near extinction for this species stopped. Hope we can do it again today. If we could do it back then we could do it again today...
You're kidding right?? Only a handful cared back then thus the near extinction status! That is how the Audubon Society was formed because of this bird. Nowadays we have a ton of conservation organizations and a huge segment of the population that are active bird watchers and conservationists. In fact, in some cases we've gone to the other extreme where we put birds/animals needs over the needs of humans. So, there are plenty of people that care!
