One of those movie scenes which makes you shout "NO! YOU STUPID BUGGER!" when you watch it for the first time, this scene from 'The Great Escape' sees PoW camp escapees Squadron Leader Bartlett (Richard Attenborough) and Flight Lieutenant McDonald (Gordon Jackson) caught out by what McDonald himself called "The easiest trick in the world to trip up a suspect!" The irony is astounding lol

This scene is always hard for me to watch because it always breaks my heart. It's a grim reminder of how even the smallest, most insignificant detail can bring you down.

Ozzythenutter1046LS Earlier in the film in the camp Macdonald warns the POW's not to get caught out by the Germans suddenly speaking English which he then forgets himself

Translation from french: - Ah, français! (Ah, french!) - Ja voll. (Yes.) [in german] - Commerçant ? (Shopkeeper/salesman?) - Oui. (Yes.) [in french, this time] - Parlez-vous français ? (Do you speak french?) [with an accent as thick as the gestapo guy, lol] - Un peu. (some / a little / a bit.) - Votre accent est très bon. (Your accent is very good) [still with a thick accent lol] [Note that a french won't say that. Your french is good precisely when you don't have any accent, or speak it without accent] - Oh, je l'ai *études fait* dans l'école supérieure. (Oh, i have *studies done* it in high school.) [Mangled grammar and vocabulary. Should be: Oh, je l'ai *étudié* au lycée.] - C'est bien, passez. (That's fine, go) [Should be: C'est bon, passez.] - Merci. (Thank you.) - Au revoir, messieurs. (Goodbye, gentlemen.) - Au revoir. (Goodbye.)

It's roughly: "English? You threaten me with a gun? Put it away at once." A rather rude way to react. Even his first reply on being stopped is a rude way to say "What's the matter?"

@VanillaSugar121 Translation of what he is saying to the guard: "Me, an Englishman? You are threatening me with a gun?! Put that away at once!" - "Oh, you're German?" - "Of course!" - "It's ok, move on, we're sorry." And then they leave him alone. He gets away quite easily there... :-P

Does anyone know the direct translation at 2:31, I know the officer accuses Bartlett of being English and I've only caught fragments of what was said i.e. "you draw your pistol on me?" and that the officer apologizes because he buys Bartlett's German accent. Can anyone fill in the blanks?

What's a bit silly from 2:31 is that even through Roger is speaking in German, he is pretty much ordering the patrol to fuck off even though he's meant to be a civillian. Wouldn't he have been arrested for that at least?
@eskikindi
@eskikindi 12 лет назад
It's really kind of silly, isn't it? It is clear that the Gestapo men suspected them. They wouldn't have bothered trying to trip them up; they would have just hauled them in. Fun scene, of course, but it's a bit absurd. :)

Is it true the reason they were all killed instead of just being taken back to the POW camp was because Hitler didn't want to be made to look like a fool after so many men managed to escape and get so far before capture?

"...ach Sie sind Deutscher?" " Selbstverständlich...." Richard Attenborough spoke German , one may forgive me, with such a horrible accent that makes me shiver. Everyone three miles around would have noticed it. Nonetheless I reckon him to have been a great actor.

@boob72

Yes it is a 100% real escape from WW2 captured on film using the very first cellular phone with a built in camera. Note the music that is heard playing in the background, probably being broadcast from loudspeakers. Isn't it uncanny how it seems to mach the pace of their pursuit...fascinating stuff.
