Hi Jessie. Very unusual for me to comment (bit of a technophobe and very much a loner since my wife died) Chilli powder has worked very well for me to deter rodents, I just scatter it in the area from supermarket shaker ( apparently interferes with their respiratory system, but doesn’t seem to bother cats). Also watering plants with a chilli and garlic cocktail seems to deter most little beasties from munching on them, I actually water at the root so the plants take it on board, tea spoon of each to a butt of water monthly. I don’t seem to get responses anymore “probably something I’ve done” so don’t worry about a reply. (Bit of an essay wasn’t it😮. Really enjoy your content many thanks Kip

Great tips for the chilli / and garlic to deter the little legs and winged visitors. I've been playing "f××k that rat" all winter, chasing him out of one compost bin after another, then the tunnels under the chicken wired bases, or containers ... every day is "seriously, here?" ... I know, there's never one, I'm fooling myself. I hear you saying you've become withdrawn in your grief and I'm sorry to hear that. Its the loneliest pain and people always think they know better about what you SHOULD be doing. Mind yourself ...

I'm putting lino into my new-ish potting shed, but not before I've sealed the wood on the floor. Walking on cardboard and newspaper right now to keep the floor clean and dry, but a bit miffed that the guys who built it didn't care about their muddy boots ... 😫.

Hi Jessie and mum, haven't you considered moving the poly to where you put your swingseat? Next to the greenhouse? It will get way more sun and no tree roots. I mean, now you can cause it's all stripped down and also you'll have a lovey place to sit down in the shade when you put your swingseat under the trees. I've been thinking about that for 3 episodes now... 😂 Love to watch you chaps. 🥰

Hi Jess and mum you doing a great job as always. It’s all starting now isn’t it. I pricked a lot of my seedlings out yesterday. I not growing so many of each kind this time. It seems more manageable. I haven’t sown flowers or herbs yet and tomatoes and cucumbers will be sown end of march. But veg wise brassicas leeks onions etc all going good. You amaze me how you get stuff done so quickly. Lino in greenhouse will be slippery if you drip water. Just thinking of mum as you tend to slip and trip more easily when you get older. Just a thought. Slabs easiest to sweep. I thought woodchip the best but you want to get away from it. Anyway I sure you will decide soon enough. Cheers ma dears🥂

Hi Jess. I'm from South Australia & have been a viewer for a number of years. Love your channel & your enthusiasm for all aspects of gardening it's infectious. Also love your little jaunts you take us on. I was horrified hearing about the baby rats all over you. My worst nightmare! Give me snakes, lizards, spiders & possums any day of the week. With spring dressing up your garden there's one not so spring like & that's poor Berta. I think it's about time she reined to their compost & you rummaged at home for some more spring like attire & introduced a new garden guardian! Heather.

Unbeknownst to many rats leave a trail of urine virtually everywhere they go. When their urine trail is disrupted, they become confused and uncomfortable. When you fog with cedar oil, the aroma that we find so pleasing effectively disrupts the scent of the rodent’s urine, and rodents will then avoid the area that has been treated and search for another area to make their home. Fogging is an excellent solution when you are attempting to evacuate a rodent infestation. Not only will a fogger be more effective for larger applications, but it effectively disperses the cedar oil throughout the nooks and crannies that could be difficult to access or easily be overlooked by other application methods. Cedar oil fogging is safe for use both indoors and out, and is effective in a wide variety of areas including homes, offices, storage buildings barns, warehouses, restaurants, hotels and more. Since cedar oil is non-toxic, it can be used in kitchens and around pet food without concern. Simply fill your fogger with the cedar oil product of your choice and either set the fogger up as a stationary unit, or hand carry it to spread the formula throughout areas of infestation.

We put weed fabric, rather thick, then 20 bags of pea gravel in our greenhouse which has been marvelous! It retains some moisture and heat. 😊 I don’t pot up in the greenhouse, but have that station just outside the house. Herbs loved overwintering in the greenhouse - I need to actually harvest some to dehydrate for tea bags.

Vinyl flooring. you might be lucky and get an offcut/endof roll. Interlocking plastic squares are quite good floring, the ones I put down for a customer were really easy to lay just need a rubber mallet. They are easy to trim with a hand saw at the edges. They come in several colours so you could make a snazzy pattern.

We always have ratgate here on our farm!. Our cats do a great job with keeping the population down, but when we have chicks or ducklings hatching its a nightmare as they're attracted by the cheeping. Full time job keeping the babies safe. They've eaten all my Cavolo Nero this year, nibbled it clean away. Also seem to have taken a liking to the grape hyacinths for some reason as well as nibbling all my tulip bulbs way under the ground. Found a massive hole leading into my cold frame as well. Ah well.....we have to try and get along with nature I suppose 🤣. Good luck with your defences Jessie!!

I am currently having major heebie jeebies at my plot, on Sunday it was like a rat disco, they were all over the site watched them running everywhere🙄, found holes in and out of my compost bin so my husband put traps down, I have lost confidence to go down to plot after one rat knocked on the greenhouse door while I was in it asking to come in from the rain !, Unfortunately the rats seem attracted to the plots that have chickens on them, which I have to walk past to get to mine. The council are sending the pest control person round so hopefully the numbers will reduce soon. Take care. X

I took them out the propogator, repotted them and put them in my unheated conservatory. They were fine for 10 days or so then 2 just completely wilted. I brought all 3 into the kitchen but 2 are gonners. Do you think the conservatory was just too cold for them ? Thanks

Another lovely vid thank you. Concerning the rats - my choice is to use a live squirrel trap baited with bird food so if a bird or hedgehog goes in it can be released. Rats 'go to sleep' after three to four days and can be disposed of. A sturdy mesh under the polytunnel should prevent rats entering but what about roots from the big trees nearby? Will the two layers of weed membrane be enough? You may find it necessary to put in a root barrier - traditionally a trench between the trees and the poly tunnel dug down some feet and filled with concrete, sorry

Would it be a huge disadvantage if you used (say) 30 litre pots to grow your plants in the poly tunnel. Sat on a bed of wood chips or sand you put on top of your metal mess and weed membrane. With say your weepy hose in the wood chip/ sand base. Would that reduce your tree root and rat invasions? Or in your experience will you get better yields from planting direct into a new raised bed? Also would an old cotton rag soaked with old oil burn a bit longer to create your smoke? I saw once someone using a paraffin weed flame gun used to push a blast of fumes through the rat tunnels which makes them beat a retreat

Along with your other viewers, I'm worried about you getting hantavirus. Anyone who comes in contact with rat poop, urine, or nests could get this disease. Gloves and face masks are things you should be using. This disease can cause organ damage. When we had a rat infestation in our shed, we had to destroy everything we weren't able to wash and disinfect. And then spray floors, etc. with a bleach solution. Luckily, we're now able to have an exterminator that has a rat poison that is formulated to have no secondary kill. Means that ANY animal (birds, cats, dogs, possums, coyotes, etc. in our area, will not be affected by poison.
