Simply one of the most amazing vocal tracks ever laid down for an album. Now that I'm 62 years old, it brings tears to my eyes to hear it, and no other song does that. I wish there was a way to tag her in this comment so she could know what an impact her performance has, half a century later.
I completely agree. To quote myself on another comment: I always get a tear when listening to this. I feel it's so important to hear it alone in a quiet place. I imagine a woman dealing with death- maybe of a child? And I go through all of the anger and extreme sadness with her on this ride. And then it ends as quietly as it begins.
I’m 77 and can’t get enough of her and needless to say Pink Floyd. I saw them once in New York in 1970 or 71. I day in my life I’ll never forget I relieve often.
I watched 30 different versions of this and said "wow, some of these people nailed it".....my 24 year old son said " nobody did it like Clare". then I watched this...….he's right.

Anyway, your comment hit the nail on the head with a thought I didn't think anyone else thought of. Thanks!
Let's please not forget the creativity that Torry put into this. Apart from her voice, which is obviously amazing, she also had to improvise and was not given much input apart from just the background music presumably and on that basis she went onto create this. So there is a difference in just being given a song with a prescribed melody and some prewritten lyrics. Here she had neither. That is what is amazing.
Asi es...!! pura improvisaciòn con base de acordes, una sola indicación...! Hacé lo que quieras ..., ! imaginate que te estás muriendo!..Este solo quedará de por vida!
I do too, but imagine that might have changed the dynamic and we wouldn't have had such immaculate vocal for the track. She was experimenting and self-consciousness may well have resulted if she felt observed as she stepped out on a limb.
I love this woman for doing that. Whenever I feel it's hard to have faith in humanity, I remember that one day, Clare Torry did use her voice to record that. There has never been something like that, even close to that, in the history of music. This is one of a kind. Nothing is similar to that. Thank you.
Donald Shipp Yes it does. Words cannot explain or describe this recorded feeling/emotion. Calling it a “song” is almost denigration of more than a masterpiece.
Thank you, Clare, for sharing your gift with us unworthies, for in doing so, you lost it forever. I'm glad you have a new gig of your own. And forever glad you shared The Great Gig in the Sky. Your voice is in my will, in my final setlist. Thank you, so so so much, dear lady. Blessed be.
One of the most emotionally moving vocal performances in all history. Just heart wrenching and uplifting and everything in between. Amazing and miraculous.
This is the principal masterpiece of the whole masterpiece called Dark Side of The Mon. For me, this is not really a song. This is a piece of art. This is magic!
Fifty plus years later. This has got to be one of the most incredible vocal tracks. it still gives me the chills when I listen to it. I never grow tired of this album, and this track is a shining star amid a galaxy of gems.
I remember as a little boy thinking what the F*** was that it has burned into my memory from 1973 until now! 46 years later and I still stand still and my heart breathes heavy and the goosebumps are there as I turn 50.
Talk Callas or Caruso, or if you are culturally bankrupt you'll talk Pavarotti, all you want: Clare Torry vocally triangulates to the extent humanly possible. Second to none is Linda Rondstadt. And by "second to none," hell yeah Rondstadt can do ANYthing, make no mistake; it's just that Clare Torry did it first when she did The Great Gig In the Sky. Could Callas or Caruso do what Torry did? That's a trick question: back in the days of Callas and Caruso, the human race had not yet been introduced to the likes of Pink Floyd. How unfortunate. Could Rondstadt have done what Torry did? Again, another trick Q: of course Rondstadt could have pulled that off - it's just that she wasn't in that particular circle at that given moment. When it comes to vocals, there are only 2 humans worth discussing: Rondstadt and Torry; Callas and Caruso couldn't pull off what Torry and Rondstadt have accomplished, yet that reality may be only because the human race had not - in the time of Callas and Caruso - yet found the potential for arts & sciences that Pink Floyd helped the human race to understand. When it comes to 50+ yrs later, I get you 9 ways to Sunday - and therein lay the beauty of a galaxy of gems.
I had the privilege of seeing Pink Floyd perform this live in 1976 at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. I'm 72 & remember it like it was yesterday. When the concert started I was leaning on the barrier that separated the crowd from the stage. MESMERIZING!!!
You havent listened to very much music! Listen the singers Yanni has, especially 'Deliverance', listen to Loreena Mckennitt's vocals such as the intro to 'The Mystic's dream' to name only one. Listen to Sheila Chandra. Im sure there are countless more! I am happy this tune has touched you so deeply, so irrevocably, and I dont wish to take that away. But you, just like myself, have only scratched the surface of all the wonderful music ever made! Its depth & breadth we couldnt imagine!

Too think clare torry sang this for pink floyd on the fly without any rehearsals is astonishing to say the least. This just floated out of her like from heaven.
This was said of the legendary "Kind Of Blue" album by Miles Davis. I equate the two. Both iconic albums of the 20thCentury. Rick Wright was also influenced by Bill Evans (piano) on that record, so we have parallels there. When you are entering the realms of bliss the choice is easy - these two records. You need nothing else......
She was a professional session singer, and I think that those singers need to be not only extremely talented, but extremely flexible and imaginative, to not only sing for a variety of styles, but to put themselves creatively into them, and make it believable. She said she started out backing the number with a lot of standard "... baby, baby" lyrics, and they said no, so she decided to treat her voice solely as an instrument, and this is what we got. Incredible.
I played this a few days ago in the background of my restaurant by mistake.Old and young just went quiet until it finished,by then it was full tilt.6 French ,3 English,a Dutch guy, 2 Japanese,2 women from Italy and 2 Aussie couples sat there transfixed until the end. Some asked what it was and by whom and some went back to their youth straight away.Whatever it stirred in their hearts,it overcame every prejudice, every language and all sense of being alone.Only great music can do that!
Her singing IS the last throes of life before the Spirit leaves the body. She captured it beautifully. My Condolences and Prayers to you and your Family. It has be 30 years since our Baby daughter Passed away at 6 1/2. I do understand and feel, even when it is hard to feel. The Love is Always with us. May they find peace in heaven ❤
i am a singer and i have to say this is the most magical and great vocal moment of all times.Makes me fly over the mountains, makes fly into the infinit, makes me feal full of strengh and hope an hapynes. Makes me feal full of LOVE inside my soul. Thanks to Pink Floyd the best band ever an Clare Torry, the soul of the souls i believe there is a place for us in the universe.
I am not a Singer and not a musician, but I think this creation is a piece of art. I just feel almost the same way as you feel whenever I listen to it.
Oh... do you allow me to add that she sings out all the tragedy of this world too? The pain, the pity for any genocide, for any kid died in the arms of his parents... of any bitterly broken heart too? She helps me to remember what counts in life... its a cry full of empathy.
I am not a musician but, I understand and respect the fact that musical creations are interpreted differently by those who listen to them. Especially, the great creations. In my case, my interpretation of "The great gig in the sky" is more close to beauty and joy in the world than to pain. Then, I do more to the interpretation that delivers first Adelaide Ferreira. However, I also understand that joy and pain are closely linked concepts and the conception of one justifies the existence of the other. For me, this is part of the content of this work of art called "The great gig in the sky". Joy and pain in the same source of creation. A genius played brilliantly by "Clare Torry". As time goes by, I think that even “Clare” seem to doesn’t realize herself about the amazing beauty she was involved in. Her performance is just awesome!
I was 12 in 1973. Of course, Money was being played on the radio and my older sister got this album. I heard this song and thought how weird and kind of wanted to skip it for more traditional tracks like Money. After a few listens, I began to hear the magic of these vocals, abstract and so haunting. It wasn't long before I was putting on this album just to hear this track, one... more... time. Wow, just wow.
I think it is the best vocal ever recorded in history . If this does not put a lump in your throat nothing will. Simply amazing and that’s an under statement
This has always been one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd tunes. Clare’s “screaming in tune” is simply nothing short of phenomenal. NONE after her have ever come anywhere close to matching her.
First time I heard this song I played it again and again . For one brief moment in the day I was taking away from my troubles and worries of everyday life . I was caught in a sea of bliss that I didn't want to come off . My vision becomes blurry and my mind is full of wonderful thoughts. This is truly an angel singing .
Pink floyd members told her to go in the studio and sing like death just hit her in the worst way. She did on the first take. They said thankyou but we're not interested. Later on, the album comes out and low and behold, claire hears her voice on their album!!!! Can you imagine??? I think she let it go for years and then she finally decided to get the royalties that she rightfully deserved!!! Way to go Claire!!!!!! You are a beautiful woman with an angelic voice that will go down in history!!
A jaw dropping session!! She's such a beautiful soul. This track will go down in history as one of the most heartfelt expressions of love, life, and the transition into the new without speaking a word ever recorded.. Claire Torres!! You have touched all our hearts with such a gifted voice solo. David Gilmore didn't even realize the impact it would have on the world after hearing it. God love him ! He even remarked to her after the second take that he thought she could still do it better. The more you hear it the more you feel .. Absolutely beautiful and brilliant piece of music. Thank you Mr. Richard Wright for composing such a piece of music.. 🙏🙏♥️🙌
Funny you should ask. The older I get (and I'm damn old - this debuted when I was a freshman in high schrule) the more I appreciate "The Floyd". I tought they were great then - but I also liked lots of top forties bands. This stuff, however, is more amazing-er the more I hear it; and Claire Torrie... OMG! By the way: She was a black chick until about 2010 or so when I saw an interview of her online. Imagine my surprise!
There have been so many magical, genius female vocalists, but this transcends them all. This may be the greatest female vocal performance ever recorded. The greatest part? She improvised all of that!!
Its such a great feeling to hear the writer of the song sing the song the way she wrote it ❤❤❤thanks songstress Miss Clare Torry ❤❤❤what an amazing songs number #1❤❤❤
this song will be played at my funeral as the curtains draw to a close, it means the world to me , so many emotions in my life are encapsulated by this singer and this song, thankyou Clare, the greatest track ever.
Where have I been all my life. Stuck listening to pop music not venturing from that until I finally grew up. By that time some of the most iconic songs of all time are on sites like you tube to peruse. At 59 I never listened to Pink Floyd (it was never my type of music). Last year I came across this piece of music, totally stunned, mesmerised with goosebumps down my arms. As a first time listener I couldn't believe a song could do that to a person, no words apart from the speaking bit at the beginning then Clare Torry gave all she had not with words but an angelic 'cry' that slowly draws you in and your eyes close and you let the sound draw you deeper and deeper, but not too deep as the song comes to an end and you have to open your eyes when you feel tears slowly drip down your face. That is so powerful, thank you xx
Shirlgirl I was about 14 or 15 years old (born 1951) when I first heard of Pink Floyd on a friend's LP, called *_Saucerfull Of Secrets_* and I didn't like it one bit. Only being familiar with The Beatles, The Animals, Sandy Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, etc, etc, didn't prepare my ears for it at all...😨 Fortunately, Pink Floyd matured whilst I did, and they became the ultimate in sound for me. Great Gig In The Sky has been my favourite ever since I first heard it, and always will be. Stay well, wherever you are...😊
These vocals. This song. That album. Not just music, but art. It's why like the Mona LIsa it never ages. 50 years in and it's as amazing as the day it was new to the world. 50 years from now this will not change. Mark my words. See ya back here in the comments section in 2073!
It's amazing that she didn't think much of it.her part in this song I mean.it's one of the greatest parts of the album and one of the greatest songs ever.I heard The Darkside of the Moon when I was about12 or 13 and the great gig in the sky touch me deep and every time I hear it it feels the same as if I was hearing it for the first time.If Clare only new how how her part of the song was going to touch so many people around the world and so many generations.she would have got her just rewards many years ago. Your name will forever be remembered for your contribution to The great gig in the sky. THANK YOU Clare Torry!!!!!
This is the one Pink Floyd track that moves me to tears, mostly that spine chilling as the piece goes from loud to quiet. I believe that more recently Claire Torry has campaigned for better deals for session singers.
@@repleh82 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HOLqx93mrAI.html Poor quality audience shot from 1990 with Pink Floyd. She also sang it on tour with Roger Waters in the 80s
The original and best. The ultimate primal scream. Clare Torry gave a spellbinding artistic interpretation of the piece and rightfully gained her place in music history.
Сколько раз слушаю, столько раз схожу с ума. Это конкретный улёт... Это.. это -- вся жизнь ------------------ - - - - - - - -........ . . . . . . . . . . How many times I listen, how many times I go crazy. This is a specific flight... This.. this is all life....
