According to Don Felder's book, Bernie put up with Glenn Frey's arrogance for years. When he poured the beer over Frey's head, Bernie was daring him to stand up and start throwing punches. But Glenn knew that Bernie had a black belt and would have gotten his ass kicked in 5 different directions.
@Larrymh07
@Larrymh07 2 года назад
I read that, too! I was thinking the black belt was of little consequence due to Bernie being in top shape and relatively clean while Frey was 'writing checks with his mouth' that his ass couldn't cover. 😃

Bernie is the coolest Eagle...besides Randy Meisner.

This guy was/is my favourite Eagle. I really liked the country rock flavour that he added, and his prowess on guitar, banjo, and steel guitar really set the band apart from other bands. Add to that his songwriting abilities: songs such as My Man, Bitter Creek and I Wish You Peace are masterpieces. Of course, The Eagles went on to have more successful albums, but they lost a dynamic when Bernie left. The Desperado album has his personality all over it. Absolutely a literal legend of a man.

Bernie inspired me to play Telecaster, mandolin and banjo. His talent, as well as Randy Meisner’s voice and underrated bass lines were so integral to the the first four Eagles albums. In spite of what his former band mates may have thought of “I Wish You Peace” the song and the sentiment are timeless. Bernie and Herb Pedersen always brought quality to any project they were involved in, representing the best of what the 70’s California sound was about. There is nice RU-vid video of Bernie playing acoustic guitar behind Linda Ronstadt singing on the TV show “Playboy After Hours”. Check it out, they are both great. Thanks for sharing this an I’m glad that Bernie is doing well. His talent has meant a lot to me since I started playing music.

This was my favorite version of the Eagles. After he left, then Don and finally Randy; the Eagles have been dead. The early Eagles were the best. Much more depth to their music

Absolutely 💯! Hotel California although a great album, exposed the eagles as just another top 40 pop band. Now it's just Don Henley and some session players, good session players but still just side players.

I never forgot about Bernie when he left the band. His contributions as a singer/songwriter/musician can not be overlooked. The Eagles would not have been the Eagles without him. Bernie was in the band for their first four albums. Undeniable talent. He sounds like a super nice guy. I wish him peace! Bernie fans will get the pun😊 Great interview! Thanks!

His clarity of speech sounds like the exact polar opposite of Joe Walsh. There’s a special vibe to the original Eagles sound, very much the Bernie Leadon effect. Glad to know that he came out the other side of the 1970s in one piece. 👍

On the Border is the only (Eagles) album where you get full-on enthusiastic, accepted (by other members) contributions from each member. Randy was still really involved & not yet so ready to leave... Bernie was still contributing as much as he usually did... Bottom line is that for those of us who really love Felder, Leadon and Meisner bc of how amazing the band sounded with those voices and their instruments, OTB was their most amazing, jam-packed with everyone's "sound contributions" piece of work. It's still got that great country/country-rock thing happening but it's also where they really started to ROCK bc they had Felder come in last-minute & add his touch to a lot of the material. By the time OneOTN was in preproduction 2 of the original members were leaving (Leadon) and about to leave (Meisner). I'm just thankful we got one last album with Meisner's vocals (Hotel California) because their harmonies NEVER sounded as full and rich again after Randy left. Hotel C. wouldn't have sounded NEARLY as good with Timothy. Sorry, Tim but you're really just a FALSE-etto Tenor. Randy didn't have to use his girly voice to reach the notes.

OK! Let’s be honest here! While I really appreciate Bernie saying that he was contrite about the whole “Beer over Glenn’s head” thing. And the part about being a recovering alcoholic which also led him to apologize to Glenn. Let’s also remember what the late Glenn Frey was really like! He was a bully! He reputedly thought of himself as a Detroit badass! He literally drove Meisner to such anger that Randy actually punched him and quit “Eagles”. He did the same to Don Felder who eventually was fired by the band despite actually owning one fourth of “Eagles” once Bernie left. The big mistake Bernie made was leaving his share of “Eagles” behind. Don Felder basically outsmarted Frey, Henley & Azoff! He successfully sued for his rightful profits! Now obviously Bernie’s share was 1/5 of the first 4 albums profits that he had contributed to vs 1/4 of the huge amounts that Felder was part of which included Hotel California and “Hell Freezes Over” etc. But even Bernie says that once it became the “Glenn & Don” show the rest of the group contributed less to albums. Personally, I believe that both Glenn and Don’s greed and egos stood front and center. Joe and Timothy are nothing more than well paid employees as are Steuart Smith and Vince Gill. I don’t know if Deacon Frey inherited his dad’s share of Eagles or just became another employee as well? Bernie is a class act with a ton of talent! God bless him always!

Such class and humor from Leadon (and interviews with Meisner). ...The main point of playing and enjoying Music is to play and enjoy it in the Moment. Communication of the Human Experience. The mechanics of the music business mostly drains the Art, like a Dracula vampire. And yet it has delivered to us so much Joy!. With your interviews and posts, Mr Beaudin... you Get It, and Why We Care.
