Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
From Vier Letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs):
Im Abendrot (At Sunset)
Jessye Norman (1945-2019), soprano
Orchestre de la Suisse romande conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch
Recorded in 1979
Text (Joseph von Eichendorff):
We have through sorrow and joy
gone hand in hand;
From our wanderings, let's now rest
in this quiet land.
Around us, the valleys bow
as the sun goes down.
Two larks soar upwards
dreamily into the light air.
Come close, and let them fly.
Soon it will be time for sleep.
Let's not lose our way
in this solitude.
O vast, tranquil peace,
so deep in the evening's glow!
How weary we are of wandering---
Is this perhaps death?
Wir sind durch Not und Freude
gegangen Hand in Hand;
vom Wandern ruhen wir
nun überm stillen Land.
Rings sich die Täler neigen,
es dunkelt schon die Luft.
Zwei Lerchen nur noch steigen
nachträumend in den Duft.
Tritt her und laß sie schwirren,
bald ist es Schlafenszeit.
Daß wir uns nicht verirren
in dieser Einsamkeit.
O weiter, stiller Friede!
So tief im Abendrot.
Wie sind wir wandermüde--
Ist dies etwa der Tod?

I played violin as a kid and had a teacher who had me listen to this when I was 14. It showed me the essence of the romantic period and forever changed the way I felt about music’s ability to impact emotion...voice especially. I loved her music and had to come here for a listen as well. So powerful!

One of the most beautiful voices ever, singing one of the most beautiful songs ever. It touches our feelings that take us over when we lose a loved one, but instead of sinking into the earth, it ascends into a glorious sunset as a metaphor for the end of a life.

Absolutely wonderful! Jessye's rapt interpretation and vocal control are miraculous - intensely moving. For me, her 1982 recording of the 'Four Last Songs' with Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus is one of the great artistic achievements of the last century. Do you have the other three songs from this 1979 event?

I truly believe that Mrs. Jessye Norman had the single most beautiful voice to have ever graced this Earth. God gave her a gift, and it was the voice of an angel. The high note simultaneously sends a chill down my spine and floods my mind with emotion. That note quite literally pulls the tears out of my eyes. Not to mention the song itself. If you know the words, meaning, and history, it’s so incredibly touching. What a love song. This is what I want played at my funeral, specifically a recording of Mrs. Norman. I’ll put it in my will if I have to.
