The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System is a 2,340 mile “marine highway” that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. This integrated navigation system serves mariners, farmers, factory workers, and commercial interests from the western prairies to the eastern seaboard. Today, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System serves as a Key Supply Chain for the world’s 3rd largest economy. Visit greatlakesseaway.org/our-system/ to learn more!

This was fun to watch and see a little slice of what I don't usually get to see. Glad the Salty shown was in fact a Salty and not a Laker.

Why isn't the EPA placing water filtration system along these rivers to improve water quality? Oh yeah, it costs too much. But so does building and maintaining off shore oil drill rigs! Something is wrong with this picture...

Question.. since I am new to this fascination, what ships carry up to 70K tons? I seen the avg was around 28 to 30k ... 70 K would be a LOT for the Lock system... as I said I am new and learning!!

The 1000 footers carry around 70k tons, they run through the poe lock.

Burns Harbor - She can haul either iron ore or coal, and has a deadweight tonnage capacity of 80,900. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Burns_Harbor

Not all of the ships can fit through all locks the St Lawrence Montreal to Lake Ontario stretch has a max vessel length of I think 740 feet. There's a lot of much smaller Lakers in the system that are obviously running smaller loads and shorter trips between ports.

In addition the, Seaway connects some of the most beautiful and fascinating waters for boating, fishing and other aquatic oriented recreation. Millions use the waterway for recreational uses every year adding many more jobs and economic benefits. The presentation was informative but started out way to woke for me. The seaway was formed as an economic infrastructure not to please the woke crowd.

Woke? What? I saw nothing about race or gender politics. Or are do just call anything you don't like "woke" because you think it makes you sound trendy?
@derjaeger3321
@derjaeger3321 2 года назад
@@withamarshview1436 One of the first points made was all about carbon emissions and sustainability, those factors were never the genesis of the Seaway. Economic growth and shipping goods efficiency were the driving factors. Plus good old politics and national defense played a big part. If it saves a few tons of carbon but cost a hell of a lot more to ship by water, commercial shipping on the seaway will go the way of the dodo. Economics, and recreation dollars drives the seaway not environmental concerns. Just look at the disaster that occurred when the powers that be started to play with the water levers thusly causing untold millions of dollars in lost shipping revenue and flooding damage. Environmental concerns are a consideration of course and I may hug a tree but I won’t kiss it - and I sure won’t marry it.

@@withamarshview1436 Der Jaeger’s Use of the word Woke just means screw the environment in the name of the all mighty dollar. The video points out how much more efficient shipping is compared to other transport modes, apparently energy efficiency means nothing to Mr. Jaeger. 🇺🇸
@derjaeger3321
@derjaeger3321 2 года назад
@@SuperRedTails No it simply means screw the woke crowd. Shipping efficiency, economics, national defense and politics were the driving forces of the seaway. Without economic efficiency- that is dollar efficiency - all the talk of energy efficiency is irrelevant. Wasteful high energy costs destroy economic development, and without good economies you have less education, less healthcare, more expensive food, inadequate housing, poor quality of life, higher crime rates, and shorter lifespans … and by the way less money to spend on the environment. That is something the woke folk do not understand. You want all types of efficiencies, efficient energy use, efficient use of natural resources, efficient use of human capital, and efficient use of financial resources among others. Something by the way, after a lifetime of developing government budgets and programs I can verify big government generally is inept at. For a efficient, effective economy you cannot have one factor over shadow all the others or in time the system malfunctions and we all suffer. We are seeing that in the United States today where foolish energy and fiscal policy is causing economic disruptions that very well may cause a disastrous major economic setback. By the way, no-one said misusing the environment is a good thing, after I cannot catch a big muskie in polluted water, or take my son swim in a fetid swamp, but we need to put all of our goals on balance so our children can enjoy better future. It is time we all understand you cannot have an unbalanced economic system, an unbalanced political system or an unbalanced eco-system or there is a big crash.
