Circling scavenger birds are never a good sign that you're on the right track. Also, those mylar heat-reflective blankets (what they were trying to substitute the tin foil for) are pretty cheap nowadays, and very lightweight & compact when folded. Still no substitute for a winter-rated sleeping bag, but campers should still carry one or two for emergencies.
