Marvel 1602 is a limited series eight-issue comic book published in 2003 by Marvel Comics. The limited series was written by Neil Gaiman, penciled by Andy Kubert, and digitally painted by Richard Isanove; Scott McKowen illustrated the distinctive scratchboard covers.

1602 is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read. I was surprised how good it was. One of the best if not the best Mavel else-world stories ever told.

I think when comicpop covered this story, Tiffany said Virgina isn't Snowbird but an original character as said by Nail Gaiman, I am not sure though.

Virginia Dare is actually the first British person to be born in the New World. So, she's a historical figure in our world. Neil Gaiman got the idea for her to transform into different animals is from stories about her turning into a white deer being one of the reasons why she went missing.

11:18 This isn't in reference to cannabis - the term 'weed' used to once also (and more commonly) refer to tobacco. Anyone who's read Tolkien's works can attest to the veracity of this (edit) Also, Xavier refers to it as 'blackening the lungs', a rather distinctive trait of tobacco

Dude I'm so glad you're covering this. This is one of my favorite series/universes in the Marvel Canon mainly becuase of the time period they're inhabiting. As well as the creative team behind it.

@@danielland3767 The book really shows you the reinvention of the Marvel Universe with every alternate version of the icons that we know and love. Along with the theme of Shakespeares '12 Players of Life' being put into play that really brought the entire plot of this book together and 1602 being a result of a possible timeline in the main universe which makes Earth-616 and Earth-311 sister universes makes it even cooler.

My professor told us to pick a British novel to do a semester long project on and I originally went with harry potter but she said it was not to a college standard. I brought up this comic as the author is one she recommended I pick a novel from. Let's just say I'm doing one of my most important projects on a comic book.

@@njp7893 Wolverine did not appear in the original 1602 series. Peter Parquad later becomes the 1602 reality's version of the Hulk. And yes, Rojahz is Cap, but he's not native to that reality. He's a Steve Rogers from a reality where Killgrave the Purple Man took over the US and became President-For-Life. Cap led a resistance until he was captured, shot in the head, and then tossed into Dr. Doom's time machine. He materialized on the 1602 Earth, disoriented from his wounds, and is taken in by a Native tribe. He eventually gets his memories back though.

I still have this series in my cupboard somewhere. I think this was before the Ultimate universe, so it was the first "alternate reality" series I read. Neil Gaimon's imaginative mind just operates on the different dimension from us. And Andy Kubert's art was very refined by this stage. No one captures expressions, especially the wide eyed shocked look, like he does.

1602 was the comic that got me into buying comics. I was on a Neil Gaiman binge at the time and picked up the TPB. It is an awesome story.

I remember reading this run. What surprised me the most about it was how much and how well the attitudes and personalities of the marvel characters were matched to the time and place while still being recognizably them. However, I do think Otto von Doom is one of the alternate Dooms that the 616-Doom would immediately kill due to how disappointing he is.

...no Rob At 11:12, when Nick fury lights his pipe the “noxious weed” that “fouls they air and blackens the lungs” is nothing more than tobacco. Heck, I don’t think hemp (or hashish as it was known) was ever really smoked anywhere outside of the Arabic nations at that point in history.

I remember this one. I NEVER finished it. I only found issues one, four and five soo I am eagerly waiting for Rob to cover this one. This re-imagination of the characters is really a breath of fresh air.

This was beautifully done. I got lucky and found all the issues for this, the fantastic four version, and new world all at the same time. I bought em all right there lol. I don't own the spiderman ones tho which is upsetting.
