The Great War: Western Front is the definitive WW1 strategy game. Play a deciding role in history with this real-time tactical experience as you take charge in the pivotal Western Front from 1914 to 1919.
Pick your faction and lead your forces to victory, by directing your armies in gritty real-time battles and by guiding high-level decisions in turn-based strategic gameplay. Dig detailed trenches, research new technologies such as poison gas and tanks, and make decisions that will have a profound and lasting effect on your success. Think like a Commander to either relive history - or redefine it.
Discover unparalleled levels of strategic choice as you step into the role of both Theatre Commander and Field Commander.
As Theatre Commander, experience enthralling turn-based grand-strategy as you direct the deployment of forces, perform research and carefully consider how you disseminate your resources across the Western Front in a war won by inches. Alongside this, take up the mantle of Field Commander in dynamic real-time battles as you direct units to defeat your opponent, build trenches and perform direct assaults by sending your infantry over the top. Pick your battles and fight them your way to shape the course of history.
Battlefields are persistent, and as you continue your push across the Western Front, you will revisit previous battlefields which will still bear the scars and destruction of earlier encounters.
Artillery bombardments leave behind craters, tanks, gunfire, and trenches desolate the once lush French countryside, and any trenches (or fortifications) you build remaining in play should you return. Shifting weather also plays a role; as the months draw on in the conflict, you’ll encounter weather changes such as snow and rain which will affect things like artillery performance and unit movement. To secure victory, you’ll need to carefully consider your strategy depending on the conditions.
Revel in an authentic historical strategy game that captures the gravity and intensity of The Great War. Partnering with the Imperial War Museums, their expertise enables us to accurately portray these pivotal moments in history.
Choose true-to-life infantry, weaponry, artillery and tanks of the time and get into the mind-set of a WW1 Commander as you employ considered tactics and deploy your army across the Western Front.
Play as either the Allied Nations or the Central Powers as you make tactical and strategic decisions to earn victory both on the battlefield and in the overarching theatre of war. Both factions have unique abilities and gameplay styles for you to discover and wield.
No play through is the same as you make decisions great and small to change the outcome of the war. Introduce new military technologies earlier in the conflict depending on your advancement of the tech tree, or change pivotal moments in history to alter the outcome of the war.
Play your way with four deep and compelling modes. Experience the unfolding saga of World War I in the Campaign, relive iconic moments with Historical Battles, create your own battles in Skirmish or test your strategies against others in memorable Multiplayer action - your journey through this enthralling conflict is unique to you.

I’ve figured now that - even if the enemy sends 9 corps at you, they probably don’t have the supply to field all 9 corps in battle. When I first started my play through I was paranoid about having only 2 or 3 corps in a sector, but knowing the enemy probably only has 1000 supply at the front makes things pretty much even every time. That’s why spying on enemy buildings is important: it gives an idea about how much the enemy can field.

This game continues to impress. I enjoy the historical aspects and level of strategy.

From what I have seen on other youtubers the AI definitely has the same economy as you, it's just that your attacks have bled you dry of reserves, now you need to do the same to the AI so that you are both miserable and unable to conduct offensive operations.
@fortusvictus8297

Depends on difficulty. On elite the AI gets about 2000 gold per turn to operate with at the beginning, so you need to bleed more than that from them each turn to prevent them from spamming attacks. That is really the name of this game on elite difficulty, attrition of economy at scale. Because at that difficulty nothing really works well for you in combat or offensive operations. And half the tech tree is useless.

Personally, what I’ve found useful on attack is using a couple death stacks of siege arty, bombers, and ten corps. Place down ten heavies, bombard for fifteen minutes straight, and once they are all dead, attack. Works against six or less corps groups. I usually lose 300-1000 and kill 10k while attacking

Without communication trenches, your boys will get slaughtered in the open by the enemy that are now in your trenches. Communication trenches benefits both sides by giving cover.
@fortusvictus8297

Depends on the difficulty, on Elite that is a suicide move as their infantry is just so much more powerful, and they have so much artillery that covers the entire map. Once they start harassing bomber missions is pretty much the end for you anyhow if you have not made a tech beeline for tanks.

I would suggest you leapfrog your reinforcements into trenches instead of moving your stationary units in the second line (that are in cover and firing) towards the first line, you basically stop your damage output and then move them out into the open., your trenches in this battle were better, they'l get better with barbed wire, just try to incorporate some Mrs evenly on the outer flanks in the second line that anticipate fighting over the first line, also mortar emplacements and setting up your arty in a more diagonal position might help with providing artillery fire in the second defense line.

Can units move over the big craters? Looking at the darn thing - feels like no? If thats the case, its silly to put trenches in front of them. I was looking at the thing, and thinking to myself what a great thing to anchor the flanks of a trenchline, narrow front, corral the enemy. And of course that is not what happens :D

Don't put MG's on the front trenches, they get destroyed in no time. Waste of resources. And watching you I can say you do kind of "okish" but your timing could be better. 😜 And you can actualy see from which side you reinforcements are enetering the map. So it should be no surprise if they arrive from a part of the map wehere they get under enemy fire. The sport depends on: #1 Where your view currently is (or "camera angle" if you like) #2 which reninforcement point is under your control #3 if it is currently usable. Because you might have noticed that they change their color to white if the "connected" strategic point (the are ) is under attack.

I use the first 80% of each battle probing up the side to find arty and MG nests and then bombard the crap out of them.

Why would you place barbwire behind your own line? I just don't get it.

@wynter2925 Год назад
@glhf2 yeah,I learned it by mistake by attacking from a side trench I had barbed wire across the whole front and they walked through like normal. Kinda a exploit much like the signal trenches issue,where you force the ai to have to dismount the trench into open ground.

I don't get the no man's land rule ether because there were times that the men in the trenches fired each with pistols

Stop using MG nests they waste supply and get obliterated by arty immediately. better to use that supply calling in your own arty or troops.
@Rex1987
@Rex1987 Год назад
i fully agree! i also stopped using them in my own campain
@thehistoricalgamer
@thehistoricalgamer Год назад
I’ve actually used them fairly effectively. In many cases drawing enemy arty down on them is good enough as it allows the infantry to mow down enemy attacks for 1-2 waves before the MGs are gone and targeted for suppression. In other cases second line MG nests wipe a wave or two out before the enemy arty targets them. It’s often enough to keep your front line in tact for 4-5 minutes of a 20 minute battle.

@@thehistoricalgamer Hello! I know I'm late to this but with barbed / razor wire (If you dont do this) Trey to make a few open gaps that the enemy will (Hopefully) move through. You can knock them dead like weeds.

Bombers are ridiculously accurate for a guy chucking a bomb over the side of the plane. For a war dominated by MG's they are useless in game.
@fortusvictus8297
@fortusvictus8297 Год назад
Yeah, I'm not sure what the game design system was for MGs. The bombers are like an anime coming into your game and doing silly stuff all over the place. Really kills the immersion.

i realy like your content and all but why do you always move your soldiers when they are in a good position and always recap occupied lines and never undefended lines and always throw your soldiers into there death unecesery
@SlamminCameron
@SlamminCameron Год назад
Okay, just being honest, I’m much better at defending than you are. You need more dual lines of trenches behind each other, that is the key. I usually have two rows of trenches at each point spread out enough to not be suppressed at the same time. I play on the hardest difficulty and I rarely lose any control points in a defense. Also almost never use machine guns. Also stop auto resolving it’s costing you way too much, you need to be better than the AI at least at defending.
