In one game the Badgers ran Dayne something like 27 times in a row. A reporter asked, "When are you going to do something other than give the ball to Dayne?" Alvarez answered; "When they stop Ron Dayne." And then he walked away.
I was at that Illini game where he rushed for over 280. It was incredible to see even though Im a lifelong Illini fan. He was so much faster, and quicker in person that he dosen't really get credit for. It was amazing to see someone bigger than most linebackers outrun safetys and cornerbacks.
Dayne was certainly a great college RB, but he isn’t in the top 5 College RBs IMO. He’s in the 6-10 range. Number 1 is Barry Sanders, no question. Ricky Williams is the only one who has an argument for number 1, so he’s a clear number 2. I’d have Reggie Bush number 3, and then Hershel Walker and either LT or Jonathan Taylor at number 5.
he gets a bad rap because he was drafted right when Tiki Barber was about to emerge as an arguable hall of fame RB, and he really needed to play in the 225-230 pound range instead of 250. With his cutback style of running, the extra weight only hurt him. His game was closer to Tiki's than Earl Cambell. Also, the Giants offensive line declined in 2001, and by 2002 the Giants were throwing a lot more with Tiki as a 3 down back, and it was hard to find plays for him. Dude couldn't catch tho lol
