Don’t forgot to go to IMDb and raise the rating. Together we can correct this insult to history 💪💪💪 Thanks to everyone for the support on the vid. Means a lot and I’m glad other people appreciate the og turtles movie as much as I
Pretty cool video .... but the clip of the dude saying family over n over again was kinda annoying.... along with the random burping ... I could of loved to watch a video without someone burping in my ear ..... I just find it kinda weird and strange ... but idk if that's your thing and your watermark in your videos then you do you my dude
The turtles never looked, sounded, behaved or worked better than in this movie. It is pure lightning in a bottle, a perfect realization. As a kid, we all felt like we were watching the real teenage mutant ninja turtles, these weren't costumes, these weren't characters, this was really them.
@@Idk-ww5co A word? 2003 TMNT wouldn't even get a letter compared to how popular the original movie was, at least in the UK. We didn't get the cartoon until Jan 1990 and unless you were a comic buff or a follower of American animation, the TMNT were unknown to kids and just came out of nowhere and just blew up overnight in the UK, they were suddenly everywhere. To get a live action movie later on in the same year after the cartoon craze was mind blowing for kids. We got the UK movie release towards the end of the year and were so hyped for it's release we got the Turtle Power song to number 1 in the summer. TMNT in 1990 was probably the biggest craze since Star Wars. Did you bring your 2003 TMNT trading cards and action figures to school to show off, having your whole class wanting to see and play with them? My generation certainly did.
This movie was kind of like looking through a portal into an alternate Earth where the TMNT are real , , , the later CGI attempts look just awful in recent movies, , , the New Line Cinema TMNT , just looked very high quality , hasn't been matched yet as of 2023 , it's still King ,🐢🐢🐢🐢 , 👍
@@helicoptersrkool not really referring to how popular it was, more so the 2003 cartoon is the best representation of the turtles IMO, but yeah that's cool though
Remember.. modern's competition is the past. Especially 80s and 90s. Modern will do anything to snuff everything from then and just remake them for "modern audiences" which is another word for brainwashed people
True. That said, I'm not replacing my BD Library, but a few I will rebuy 4k UBD like John Carpenter's The Thing. Unfortunately Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai 4k is ONLY available in Japan for 4k UBD, yet to be released in US but I do have the Criterion BD.
I LOVED this video, but there's a seriously flaw near the end that needs correcting. Judith Hoag, who played April was not a "nightmare to work with" for the crew. She may have been a nightmare for the director, but that's because she insisted on giving the performers in the suits (stunt fighters and actors) better working conditions in the NC summer heat. By all accounts of her peers she was a gem to work with and she should not be tarnished for advocating for humane treatment of her peers just because doing so was inconvenient for production.
Also to note is she is still the one from the films most connected to the fans. During the pandemic she did the online reunion which was really heartwarming. She got a bad wrap, but she's a gem for the fan community.
While that may be true, and she seems like a nice person, she did directly parrot the "too violent for kids" narrative that lead to the "dumbing down" of the sequel.
I wonder what the real reason was that some of the actors never came back for the sequel... Casey's gone, April's different, Shredder's different, Leo's suit actor, Donnie's voice actor, they even gave Raph a different voice even though the original actor was in the sequel...idk why.
@@DAMIENDMILLS Casey was seen as too violent of a character. They basically replaced his character with Keno. Much of the rest of the cast was not brought back. I think it was for money reasons, but I’m not sure.
29:40 something that really hit me with this scene is that plot wise, Splinter was hanging in shackles at the time and probably thought he was going to die, and the turtles did not know where he was. But when they are able to communicate, he does not tell them where he is or ask them to come rescue him, he just takes the opportunity to tell them that he loves them and is proud of them.
The beauty of the scene where Leo rushes shredder is that he and Raph switched places for a moment. Leo went in a fit of rage to blindly attack shredder. While raph played the leader and made the decision for his brothers to throw the weapons in an attempt to save Leo but in that shredder was still going to kill Leo. No doubt raph felt the full weight of what Leo usually feels as leader. Just a really good attention to character development there. Also raph hugging splinter at the end while the rest of the turtles dance was really heart warming
Had no idea critics hated this film or that it had low ratings on most critic platforms, I always had huge respects for how this film depicted the world of the Turtles so early in the franchise.
Critics always hated movies that were silly like Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, He-Man and stuff like that. Anything superhero related was bashed at the box office before the MCU and Iron Man
@@DAMIENDMILLS Well I know with the suits critics would consider it dumb, I was just thinking with how dark the film was considered at the time some of them would like it or at least perception among newer critics online would be a bit better.
Me too I loved thos movie, I watched Tmnt 1 and 2 every day after school. The only thing that shocked me was how different it was from the cartoon. As a kid I didn't know about the mirage comic, I had the Archie version of the comic books. Splinter was originally a rat instead of hamoto yoshi! I was like why did they change tge story? Not knowing the cartoon was not the original story and Splinter was originally a rat not a human
Critics at the time had a bias towards anything comicbook. They regarded it a childish crap. The only films they gave a pass to was Superman and Batman because of the popularity. This is why it’s important to not follow them blindly. You can see the same behaviors when you look at how the academy awards treat animation to this day.
@metabaron6664 Yeah some critics can be weird, especially people on the top. That's why I tend to trust myself with opinions on media and not people like the Academy.
Thank you for reminding me of this movie. My father just passed. I remember him taking me to see this movie as a kid, so the campfire scene hits so hard. I'm thankful for my dad.
I just saw the 1990 movie for the first time at my local theater in downtown L.A., and I was so moved by the entire film. From the amazing Jim Henson suits, the story, comedy and especially the choreography! This movie is unlike no other, and I really love some of the beautiful shots in the movie like when the brothers are mediating together, what a touching scene to make anyone cry.
I love the continued narrative that Judith Hoag was a nightmare, when her side is is that she was advocating for the working conditions of the stuntmen in the suits.
I watched this again in recent years and was blown away by how well it held up. Its far and away the best thing to come out of the franchise. The quintessential realization of these characters and personalities.
This movie hasn't aged at all, infact i remember being a child and my mother had taken my brother and I to the movie theater to see it. Once the movie ended and the credits got ready to role a guy who worked there asked the audience did we wanna watch it again and everyone said yes and the movie rewinded all the way back to the beginning really fast and the audience cheered in excitement. After watching it for a second time we left the theater and near every subway, sewer and dark metropolitan area I could imagine Raphael, Leonardo & their brothers lurking in the darkness as not to be seen by humans while on one adventure or another. Even as an adult whenever I've entered a subway tunnel I instantly think of that scene where Raphael rescued April and went to the sewer lair through the subway tunnel. I'm so happy and grateful I grew up in that time period. I wish we could get a prequel following Shredder, Humato Yoshi & his pet Rat Splinter all the way up into his transformation and introduction to the turtles Chris Nolan would be a great producer for this project with Jim Henson's creature shop back on board.
I remember my dad taking me to a screener of this as a kid. It had Mikey's subplot, as well as Tatsu killing the foot soldier in the locker room and Shredder fighting his own foot soldiers before making his family speech. Watching it later on home video I was always confused that I remembered the movie differently but just chalked it up to my vivid imagination. Nice to know that version of the movie was real as I always preferred it. Would like to see that version restored some day.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. TMNT (1990) truly is one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. The quality is so top notch, because the filmmakers took the source material seriously. They trusted that kids could handle this level of maturity. God knows I did when I fell in love with this movie when I was a 6 year old kid. I wish Hollywood could recapture this kind of magic. Well done with this video. Keep up the great work!
One of my favorite films of my youth, I went to the cinema 4 times to watch this as I was obsessed with TMNT, collected the film cards and had all the toys too.
I always thought of the scene of Mikey and Donnie waiting for the pizza man as Mikey not even wanting to think about losing splinter so he doesn’t want to answer Donnie’s question. That’s why he had that subplot that was deleted.
I and my younger watched the animated show when it premiered on saturday mornings in 1987, I was 10 years old(I'm now 46) I didn't understand much of it and why Shredder hated Splinter so much, and why he wanted to defeat the Ninja Turtles, but I liked it and it was fun to watch. In 1990, when the live action movie was released, I asked my Dad to take me and my brother to see it. He took us on a saturday afternoon a few weeks after the premiere weekend. I thought it one of the greatest movies I ever saw. Now of course, Shredder and the Foot Clan were intimidating, though I wondered why Kang, Bebop and Rocksteady weren't there.(As the animated show was well in to it's third season and they had been introduced) At the same time, it throughly entertaining, and there real moments of compassion and caring with Splinter and the Ninja Turtles. He was their dad, but also their master. He raised them, but also taught them the way of the ninja to hide(and also to fight if the situation need be) and he was right to do so. I'm so glad I found this video. I hadn't thought about The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie in years! So, thank you for making this video and taking about them, and going over the plot points so well, and so throughly. I had forgot Danny existed in the first movie at all. I never knew that Judith Hoag was terrible to work with, and that being the reason she was replaced with Paige Turco.(who later appeared both on Person Of Interest and The 100) I have fond memories of watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and it's sequel(the third movie is terrible) with my dad and brother. I did watch the 2003-2006 animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles show that aired on Fox Kids(renamed 4Kidstv) I was 26 in 2003, and I watched it. I wanted to admit that I watched it as a grown ass adult and I really enjoyed it too.
1. This movie is a masterpiece 2. Critic's that dislike this movie were the kids that didnt get ninja turtles toys or hugs....or too many hugs.... 3. RELEASE THE BARRON CUT! 4. This is a great video and analysis, the burping makes it even better!
Okay you had me LOL-ing about 5 mins in, even before the 'FAMILY' secret word shots of Vin Diesel started happening, but when they did I completely lost it. Bravo good sir, you've earned my sub and I definitely voted on imdb
Excellent video. Excellent. The breakdown, the comparisons to modern media, the jokes, all of it was super well done. And the vin diesel face flashing every time you say “family”, killed me 😂
36 years old and turtles were my life as a kid and I still watch this movie to this day. Turtles vs Shredder best fight scene ever just by the lines and build up itself. Now You Face The Shredder.
After over 30 years one of my favorite movies is finally getting the recognition it deserves. It’s dark, it’s fun, it teaches…it’s just a masterpiece that I can sit down and enjoy as an adult and even share with my kids now. The themes of this movie taught me a lot as a kid but as an adult, as a father, they take on a deeper meaning and you pay attention more to characters like Splinter.
Thank you very much for allowing me to see this movie on such a deeper level that I completely overlooked. Holy cow I love this movie so much more now! You're hilarious with your vin diesel inputs and "different times" with kids smoking moment as well! Lol This movie is absolutely flawless!
Been in love with this movie since I was 4 years old. It still holds up and I think about this 1990 movie all the time. Great storytelling and craftsmanship. Between my lack of free time and preciousness for the source material, I'm still sitting on doing a TMNT 1990 spinoff short film. I wish I could do it practically but I'm opting for CGI that's as grounded as I can make it...
You did an amazing job highlighting the there's in this movie. Took me back to my childhood. Thanks for the trip back to the 90's. Reminded me I was going to be a ninja when I grew up. 😅
This movie is seriously underrated and better than it had a right to be. I have it on Blu-ray (yes, those primitive things), but sadly the image quality is not the greatest. I doubt we’ll ever get a high-quality remaster like those reserved for “classics”, but hey, a man can dream.
You missed one thing at the end that coincides perfectly with the themes you're talking about; Shredder essentially kills himself! His action of trying to kill splinter forces splinter to defend himself and let go of Shredder, causing him to fall to his death. If he hadn't done that Splinter would have certainly pulled him back up after dropping some wisdom. Great tribute video to the first TMNT. It's truly a gem.
That Shredder introduction used to scare the shit out of me when I was a little kid. I’d have to look away or leave the room. And I loved it. The music, the tone, it’s all perfect
Saw this in the theatre with my parents and brother on opening night, we only heard radio commercials and saw the poster when it came out...I had no idea what to expect but it blew our fing minds .... I love everything about it ... even the cringe dialogue that I rolled my eyes at as a kid .... ffs its just so damn good.
The only problem I have with your video is you used the 2000's cartoon in the beginning not the one you actually speak of. But outside of that you have right info
Excellent video. I can't believe it's the first and only one on your channel and look forward to seeing more film deep dives. Pretty lucky for me that you dropped this one right as I began to revisit my love for the TMNT franchise and am currently diving into the comics. Have a sub!
What I appreciate even more now than when I was a kid is the father-son relationships. After this movie and since i can't think of another movie that has such a positive story on that kind of relationship. Nowadays, fathers are seen as idiots, goofballs, screw ups and incompetent. Mothers are the ones seen as the fatherly figure and motherly figure in media today. Movies and shows are always dunking on fathers anytime they can and then at the end they usually give a small pass to fathers but not so much as to make them seem more competent than the mother or even the kids. I really hope this changes with the next generation coming up as we can see how kids are growing up without father figures in the home to help raise and mentor their kids. This is already a long post but maybe you can put together a video showing the contrasts from this movie to the current media about the relationships berween fathers and sons. I always saw Danny, err I mean Dan, trying to figure out his place living with an over bearing father and trying to figure out how to become his own man. Unfortunately, he finds a psychopath in his quest. Dan takes his first steps to becoming a man by telling his dad he wants to be called Dan. This is very important as he quits running and faces his father and that has the change in their relationship that Dan is looking for because his father respects his decision and accepts and embraces him.
Every vin diesel edit got progressively funnier lmao, there's only one real criticism though, at times it was noticeable that you're reading a script with some bits of silence between the narration, but when the casual meme and joke popped it worked well so maybe more dynamic editing and narration would work in your favour. It's still a pretty good first video though, keep at it dude!
100%. Been saying this forever. Amazing direction and cinematography, mastery of light and shadow, perfect rainy portrayal of 80s/90s NYC, the grounded and iconic Henson suits. Best comic book movie ever.
Amazing job on this mini doc man. You're breakdown is spot on and you do a really good job communicating the nostalgic aspects. TMNT is a masterpiece and still holds up.
I saw that in 90, at 10 years old and had no clue what they were, but fell in love. I'd never seen the toys or cartoon, but fell into the graphic novels, toys, and Archie comics pretty damn quick. It's a semi-yearly re-watch, still.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s funny, I’ve brought this up to people before when talking about comic book movies. This movie is right after The Dark Knight in my list. It’s tone, they way it creates emotional moments that are actually touching, and the action is actually pretty great. This was my favorite movie as a kid and I feel like it holds up. It’s well written/directed and ahead of it’s time. I think so many comic book movies fail to really give us anything emotional or to truly care about. This struggle for family and belonging is something people can relate to. Great video!
So glad RU-vid suggested this channel. I thoroughly enjoyed this breakdown. You definitely nailed it. The little comedy bits/lines you threw it made me lol. Subscribed and can’t wait for more
To this day I've made the very same arguements about this movie. The best villian intro ever. And how its legit a good movie based around family. Genuinely well written. Im happy to see someone else appreciates this movie as it deserves. The only point I also like to mention that you left out, is the awesome scene where Ralph is fighting all the foot alone... He mocks all the other cheesy movies, pointing out how you can never win by waiting your turn. They respond, and he pays for it. Great stuff!
Got a bit emotional watching some of these scenes again. I grew up with this movie and loved it. Now that i have kids of my own, the messages really hit home. Splinter dropping some serious wisdom. Amazing analysis cuz
Truly a well thought out and superb review of this movie. You've given me aspects I didn't even think about for this movie, and this is my go-to movie to play in my head when bored 😅
To me, this is the _only TMNT movie._ 10-year-old Me was simply in awe sitting in the theater watching this film. Back then, I didn't know about the comic book origins; I was only familiar with the '87 cartoon, which I still love even today (that theme song!🔥)😌
Im 41 years old, i approve this video. I've been saying it flr years that no other kive adaption can compare to the TMNT movie. I remember seeing it at the theaters on March 30th, 1990. I was 8 years old and I've been in love with thus ever since
Totally agree this film is an underrated gem. But the shots from the cartoon you show are from the 2003 version not the 1987 version and, therefore the scene you state inspired the film couldn't do so as it came over 10 years later.
Fun fact: the guy holding the 2 cartons of cigarettes is Sam Rockwell... He played as Justin Hammer in Iron man 2 he played the crazy guy with a long ass name in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy he also played Wild Bill in the green mile.. many movies hes been in and hes a pretty good actor.
For Mikey being crippled and sad with Splinter's absence, he was the one seen reacting fully openly when Splinter appeared and came to the rescue, by shouting out his name. He was the one tearing up after making contact with Splinter through mind meditating.
Great video my man. You were able to beautifully articulate why i loved and still live this movie. That scene where splinter comforts and advises raph always gets me even now. Man what a film.
Fantastic commentary on the greatest movie of my childhood. Well done. I never knew about Mikey’s rage scenes that were edited out. I would love to see the unedited footage to this film. Going to IMDb to up that rating. Thanks
