Sounds incredible! My nephew managed a trash company a few years back. Someone had thrown a ‘64 Princeton Reverb in the garbage. When the truck came in my nephew snagged it and brought it home. He put a 3 prong cord on it and I bought a Jensen speaker for it. Plugged it in and sounded awesome. He gave it to me as a gift. How cool is that?

I collected amplifiers from the 70s up to a few years ago. I had over 100 old Fender and other famous amps. I only held on to 3. The 64 Princeton Reverb, the 58 Tweed Champ and Deluxe Fenders. In my opinion, they are the most beautiful and versatile sounding amps ever made. There use in famous recordings is prolific. This video really accurately reflects the rich tone of the PR. There wasn’t a studio in Nashville or LA they did not have one.Thank you

I blueprinted someone’s 1964 PR then built 2 clones, the first for my oldest friend and the second for me. I ended up with a Mid control plus a Dwell. Still haven’t slowed down the tremolo but need that too. Oh - adjustable bias is essential as well. I ended up replacing the bias board on the 1964 when the cap crapped out.

It doesn't get any better than your Les Paul with P90s and your original Princeton Reverb. I have the same combination. I'm 80 years old and have played and/or owned at least 50 different amps. This one is my favorite. I also love P90s best of all. The Princeton also sounds good with my Fat 60s Strat pickups, and the Gibson Burstbuckers, but the P90s are something else. Very well done.

Another fun fact about that audition, Ozzy had heard so many people audition that day that he was ready to wrap it up. He heard Randy tuning up and getting ready to play his audition piece, when Ozzy came over told him “you’re hired.” Randy actually got a bit upset because he had prepared this impressive piece, only to get hired during his warm up. I think he forced them to listen to him play it anyway, not that he’d have to do much arm twisting there, lol.

@@barbsfpv3066 I think Ozzie just instantly noticed Randy's great-all-the-time attitude; the skills were a huge bonus, but his attitude is probably what let those skills flow. @gaboogablah
@gaboogablah 2 года назад
The speaker was definitely going to be replaced because of the common problem with the disintegration of the surround material used to attach cone to the frame. I noticed it happening to so many speakers made before the 90s, it probably still happens to speakers unless they are using a different material. But I stopped repairing and building speakers in the last ten years ago, and the speakers I made for myself ten years ago still have a good surround material so far. That's probably the most common problem I've seen over the years. Cleaning the circuit board(s), potentiometers, and switches and physically looking at the board(s) and making sure that the solder joints, you could find a cold solder joint or one that the component lead through the board wasn't allowed for the solder to flow correctly and the lead isn't actually soldered to the pad, but it still worked or could be intermittent. The smd (surface mount device) chips can act weird or not at all just by dust or something that is between their leads and changes the state because it's conducting where it shouldn't be. A toothbrush is good for cleaning between the leads, and isopropyl alcohol is a definite cleaner, it evaporates and doesn't leave a residue. I haven't been able to find the 90 percent isopropyl alcohol, but the 70 percent is good enough, and a good sprayer of contact and surrounding things that can be damaged by the type you are using, a contact cleaner that I thought was the best was Blue Shower, but DO NOT USE BLUE SHOWER G3 BECAUSE IT DAMAGES PLASTIC, and never use WD4O because it is actually conductive and leaves a residue and makes it build up dust, dirt and other stuff you don't want.

Very nice Matthew. That Strat was singing. The LP P-90’s I always like them. Was thinking I need a Fender reverb amp. Considering a twin, but I’ll check out the Princeton. It could be a good choice. Thanks

The Sweetwater reissue is a killer version that comes with a 12” speaker.

I have a twin, and I absolutely love it for clean tones. And by clean tones I don’t mean edge of break up, I mean almost solid state levels of clean. To get the amp to break up even a little with medium output humbuckers, I need to crank the volume to about 5, which is deafening. Also, the amp is very picky about overdrives and distortions going into it, and many drives sound awful through it. Also it is absurdly heavy, and an absolute pain to move around. Still wouldn’t trade it for anything else, definitely my favorite amp I’ve ever played through.

There aren't any capacitors in a Reverb tank. Did you mean you had the transducer replaced?? Because the only electronic parts in a tank are the transducers, the rest of it is all Springs and wires.
@MatthewScottmusic
@MatthewScottmusic 2 года назад
That's what I meant. I misspoke. It's a coil of some kind that had to be rewound.
@mark5150ty
@mark5150ty 2 года назад
@@MatthewScottmusic yeah I figured. A transducer is a very small coil, basically a speaker without a cone. Instead of vibrating a cone, like a speaker, a transducer vibrates the spring of the Reverb tank.

I live in Norman and I have a 1970 Twin Reverb I don’t know what to do with because I bought it in England so it’s got the wrong power supply on it. Maybe I can take mine to the same guy

Nothing better than a Princeton! I had blackface '66 but sold it regrettably. Since then I just recently bought a Laney L5T112 5 watt 1x12 as I don't have a genuine British Class A amp in the arsenal with a real Celestion to boot. This thing is a HUGE 5 watts that reminds me of the Princeton's lush, warm and creamy tone, along with as much volume or even more. Keep her and never let 'er go! And, one of my fave showcases of a Princeton live in action was Kenny Vaughan with Marty Stuart slaying it with a Tele on Letterman ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cx_l9kLxycw.html

Matthew that tone on that Les Paul is killer. Man I've heard so many great recordings over the years with that tone it just sounds good and I'll let the strap do it too but that Les Paul man that's sweet thanks for everything you do bro

Amazing Video Mathew! I agree that the Princeton reverbs are inspiring to play. My grandpa is letting me borrow his reissue one and I love it. He also owns one from 1976. I believe it has a replaced speaker but man that thing sounds amazing. I love that you say it's a great recording amp too! the few times I've gone to the studio it's always been my Strat with the studio's Princeton.
