It's more meaningful than that. He stated that he would have killed the woman, or the child, if they got in his way. What stopped him from killing, to carry out his orders? He only resigned when faced with a brave man, willing to face his own death, unarmed, with honor. The samurai proves his own honor. But only when face to face with his equal. For no one else.

I'm totally in love with pieces of media where the 'bad guy' shows honour and steps aside, and that he was the bad guy because of the situation and not from his heart. I wish more stories had that sort of openness for the future redemption of the antagonist. This is also one of the better example of the Zatoichi character, which is quite an absurd character fundamentally, but here is a more believable portrayal of how he might learn to defend himself in this sort of engagement. Not fancy moves, but creating a flurry of protective swings of the sword and getting bodily in contact with the opponent to feel out how to move. The way the actor uses his eyes is very suggestive of a more realistic blindness too, where he's likely able to discern light from dark enough to get a vague sense of where people are, and possibly even has some of the perception of movement if not able to sense it 'visually', like how many blind people will respond to facial expressions they can't see, because some information is getting through.
@sincerelyernest

i like your thinking. the great majority of blind people are not completely without vision. whoever choreographed this scene no doubt has given a lot of thought into how a blind person might fight.

I think The coolest thing about this fight is how Akatsuka wouldn't attack Ichi Unarmed. Plus he knew he was gonna die from the stab wound to the belly. There would've been absolutely no honor in killing the FAMOUS Zatoichi while he was unarmed. Everybody would've told tales how he was a coward. But instead, Akatsuka retained his honor by following his orders and even died a noble death by accepting defeat. He walked off and died somewhere.... That's kinda sad! A samurai prefers to die on the battlefield, but maybe he went to a loved one and got to say goodbye before he died.. idK.... He prolly didn't make it far. Very sad. Rest in peace Akatsuka

I’ve seen more than a few Japanese movies, and much of what is conveyed is non-verbal facial…such as in the closing scenes of Ikiru, not a Samurai film. This final fight and the expression of the Samurai, who realizes Zato Ichi only wounded rather than kill him and then throws his sword to save the father at risk of his own life and Ichi physically impedes the Govt official realizes he has lost to Ichi’s compassion. It's absolutely beautiful how it ends. Them both knowing the notion of "Bushido" overtakes the samurai code at the end of the day. Honor, respect for one's opponent, dedication and philosophy. He couldn't strike Zato, an unarmed opponent, because his true sense and pride through Bushido wouldn't allow it, even though as a samurai he was instructed as so.- and Zato knew it. Not only that, he has the same respect for the ideology.

I'm actually looking for a seemingly obscure samurai film. I can only describe the scene since I found the clip a long time ago, it's gone now. The scene starts out with a loyal samurai protecting his lord in his home from another lord who is upset about some thing or another. The loyal samurai is approached by the rival lord, who orders him aside so he can kill the other lord. The loyal samurai refuses politely and apologizes, and the two engage in a duel. The loyal samurai only has his short sword, while the rival lord has both katana and wakizashi. During the duel, the loyal samurai takes a pretty nasty cut on his left shoulder, but eventually gains the upper hand with a sword trapping technique, where he traps his opponents sword when he thrusts, catching it by the guard with his blade and driving it up over the rival lords head and sticking it into the wood above him. The rival lord attempts to draw his short sword, but is stabbed in the abdomen, with a large satisfying blood spurt at the end when he removes his sword. After this fight, the loyal samurai's lord betrays him, ordering his men to kill the loyal samurai so he can blame the whole thing on him. Sorry for the rambling description, but it's all I have. Hopefully someone knows what movie this is. Tried to do this on reddit but I keep running into issues, hopefully someone sees this and can help.

I’m guessing Japan had samurai films just like America did with cowboys throughout 60’s and 70’s

A lot of cowboy films are inspired by samurai films. Some are even direct rip-offs

After Samurai films, italian westerns ripped them off in a good way. American Westerns are too soft, in it's italian counterpart it breaks the rules and creates it's own plot and characters instead of another soft John Wayne western.

@@mantyxxx You got it wrong sir, Seven Samurai was released somewhere in the 1950s, Magnificent Seven released a decade later (1961).

Not a few may find the back ground score sounding similar to the original Godzilla's. Akira Ifukube composed both.

One of the very few times Zatoichi really could have been killed by his opponent. There was no way he could have gotten out of this Sitation with skill, for his Sword was way out of reach. Instead he gambled on his opponent to come to his senses and do the right thing.

Not in this film. But the actor of Lone Wolf was in a couple Zatoichi movies. Hell, the two of them are brothers or half brothers, I forget IRL.

3:50 What a powerful line, even explaines some of the disgusting things the Nazi's did, blaming it all on "We had our orders" even though thry fully lived out their twisted fantasies, today Germany is a good place though

Some here do not take into account that Zatoichi purposefully studied the art of swordsmanship from an early age. In one of the episodes, this is described in detail.

I think it does, I also think that's atleast part reason why he walked off because maybe he knew the stab was gonna kill him therefore he knew he had already lost the duel really. My theory anyway
