Amazing tactile feel. Distinct mechanical acoustics. Unparalleled durability. The IBM Model M is likely the most influential keyboard ever- even if it’s NOT great for gaming. But how does a brand new Unicomp Classic compare?

I feel like it was initially intended to be a ''compression column switch and actuator'' when they were developing it, until they discovered a ''catastrophically buckling'' side effect in its design [which they had a liking to and just went with it]
@achtsekundenfurz7876
@achtsekundenfurz7876 2 года назад
"catastrophically buckling" seems to be a term in engineering, when you put so much load on a metal beam that it breaks. That kind of failure tends to happen very suddenly, and it can lead to chain reactions if it puts more load on other supporting structure. It was probably used in the patent because engineers reviewing the patent would be familiar with the term (although most patents were concerned with _avoiding_ that behavior) and would understand how the spring would yield to pressure. It's technically _not_ a catastrophic case, because unlike a metal tube or beam, a spring doesn't take damage; it just snaps back upright when most of the load goes away. However, it happens just as suddenly, which is important for fast typists (and competitive gamers); if it did not, the moving parts would introduce some "lag" even before processing, network bandwidth, signal round-trip time etc. would apply. And by labeling it "catastrophic" they could differentiate between this one and other means of the term "buckling." My fave is "bomb calorimeter" which is a heat measurement device used in chemistry. The "bomb" is a pressure container which is filled with a sample, which is then ignited. Like an explosive kind of bomb, the thick walls of the container can withstand substantial pressure. _Unlike_ the explosive kind, the pressure tends to build up within seconds or minutes, not within milliseconds, and the container is never breached. And the contents are usually flammable, but not explosive. There are quite some jokes about talk like "preparing the bomb" and variants which were taken as illegal acts by some uninitiated person nearby.

If someone told me I couldn't bring in my Model M, I'd deliberately bring in something in a metal case with BOX Navy/Jade thick clicks for the next day. Not really, but I would like to see the reactions.

@Thalanox 4 года назад
@@Jrez What could possibly fit that description? I'm not entirely sure what "BOX Navy/Jade thick clicks" are, either. Could you explain that to me?
@Jrez
@Jrez 4 года назад
@@Thalanox Kailh is a manufacturer of keyboard key switches. The BOX Navy and BOX Jade versions are not only clicky switch types, they are designed to be very loud and tactile by the use of a thicker "clickbar" than on their BOX White switches, that makes a louder noise and is more force to overcome for the tactile feel. I believe they are some of the loudest switches you can buy. Clicky switches IMO sound best in big, heavy full-size keyboards. IBM's beam-springs probably would not sound as deep and "thocky" in a 60% board. However, a BOX Jade/Navy example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tgAzGrdqqXU.html What would fit that description is a custom keyboard like this, where each part is chosen independently. If anyone finds this topic interesting and wants to get into mechanical keyboards, I warn you it can be extremely expensive, avoid buying on impulse.

If you want good mechanical keyboards don't get gaming ones. They are super overpriced for what they offer. Aside from the logitech one that has very fast Bluetooth / wireless and seems sorta decent. You can buy and build absolutely fantastic keyboards for the rpive of a "high end" gaming keyboard. And completely costomize the feel, materials, switches etc. And nowadays they all have the gaming stuff (bright multicolour leds etc)

Hi, Linus . . . This is the first of your videos I have seen. I somehow stumbled onto your channel from watching many videos on Mechanical Keyboards (specifically, DAS Keyboards, which I had first heard of from reading NY Bestselling author, Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X series). I learned MANY new things from you in this video: the history of the IBM keyboard you featured (I used it for 9 years in one of my first jobs out of college in Dallas) and the name of the connector (PS2) for one of the old Compaq keyboards which I still own and have wanted to use with my Early 2011Apple MacBook Pro because I like the sound and tactile feel of a "standard" keyboard! (Now, I'll be able to purchase a PS2 to USE converter online!). THANK YOU for your channel -- I subscribed! I know this might be buried, but I am writing this on a 2019 Unicomp Model M PC-122. I have ZERO complaints about this keyboard, it is built like a tank, the keycaps are printed slightly off-center but are sharp and well-constructed, it types like a dream, and Unicomp were excellent to work with. If you're concerned by what Linus said about the build-quality, note that these imperfections are pretty rare and Unicomp has stepped their game up a lot recently (and will be able to do so more if they receive more business; they're serious about their reputation and customer satisfaction). Do you want a modern, clean, USB-functional model M with modern layout and other tweaks and conveniences? Then fear not. The Model M is alive and well.
@SirRobertDole2
@SirRobertDole2 3 года назад
If you think the unicomp M's are built like a tank, you should try a model F lol. the M's feel absolutey flimsy by comparison, and the M's are already well built to begin with, especially for a modern keyboard.
@jb_lofi
@jb_lofi 3 года назад
@@SirRobertDole2 Absolutely, but very few can compare with those beasts! To be clear, I don't think the Unicomps are as good as early Ms or Fs, but they're not trash, which is the main concern people have when they ask me about mine. Because critics concluded (rightly) that they aren't as good as original Ms, that's been extrapolated to "Unicomp make cheap plastic tat" by some. That's not fair to Unicomp, I've had plenty of crap keyboards and theirs isn't on that list. I'm very happy to use my Unicomp, I honestly look forward to typing on it. Sad, I know, but still.

I ordered a new Model M from Unicomp 10 days ago and I absolutely love it! 😍 The quality issues that were described here and in other videos & posts are gone. Unicomp fixed those. I ordered mine with the Ultra Classic chassis since it's slightly smaller in width. I also ordered it with Windows 95 keys. Typing on it feels so much different than on a standard rubber dome or Cherry keyboard. It really is something unique and lots of fun to work with! :) Of course it's slightly different than the originals from the 80's and 90's but Unicomp had to modify their model M to stay competitive - that's a factor that shouldn't be forgotten.

@RTobi-(Rummeltobi): THANKYOU! :-) Seriously thankyou :-) . I was freaking-out about ordering a Unicomp--Model-M because of the issues described here [in this RU-vid-video], but seeing as how you ordered one (and RECENTLY i might add[, (based on the age of your post)]), I'm thinking I'll order one :-) . THANKYOU! :-) P.S. I used a second-generation IBM Model-M (one of my universities had *REALLY*-OLD computers in the computer-lab inside the library (the computer-lab in the library was a separate-room from the room that had all the books & study-desks, by the way)). (Yeah I know: lucky me :-) ). (It was typing-heaven to a person-who-types-without-looking-down-at-the-keyboard). Unfortunately when the university had a "give-away all the old equipment"-day those keyboards were the FIRST to disappear (even though I arrived there EXTRA-early, WAYYY-before they opened-the-room where all the old stuff [they were giving[-]away] was). I was trying-to--find-out what were the "Cherry-MX"-switches that are the CLOSEST-THING to those 2nd-Generation--IBM-Model-M "Buckling-Spring Switches", (but I dunno if that would be the Cherry-MX "Brown" or the Cherry-MX "Blue" switches). Any advice and/or tips and/or pointers?

@Rummeltobi 2 года назад
@@reoencarcelado5904 I thought I replied to this comment but I may have closed the tab before hitting the reply button. I'll post a link to another video in my 2nd reply here. That video also confirms that the quality issues are gone. Lucky that you could use these at your university but it sucks that you didn't get one when they were giving them away. Although I do wonder why the university would give those wonderful keyboards away. Especially why they would keep those away for free? Those are worth a fortune. I did never own a keyboard with Cherry switches but I did type on some keyboards that have these switches. I don't think that Cherry switches come close to the buckling springs. Personally I'd go for the Unicomp. A few other things that I love about the Unicomp Model M: - the feel of the keys. I think those are made out of PBT which has a quite interesting and good feel. As far as I know those keys will not tear off. - the angled shape which is ideally for writing

I actually used some of the weird variations, but the most common variation was the number of function keys. The control and "Windows" keys often existed with other names. PC keyboards actually had command keys at one point instead of control. The other key was often called meta. At times, there were all three, but this made the shift and return keys smaller.

There's something about the keypress feel and sound on these old things that is just super satisfying. It's like a little clack noise that says "Your keypress was registered" after you press the key all the way down. I'm sure it's super annoying to anyone else in the room, but I love that feel and sound. New keyboards just don't feel the same. I haven't used one since I was in primary school, but I do miss that feedback. If you have a dedicated office or room that is noise-isolated, this type of keyboard is so satisfying to type on when you're typing out actual papers/documents. I can't imagine using it for anything else, though.

@@nicekeyboardalan6972 its actually a common problem for the older tooled keysets from Unicomp to have molding imperfections. They have since updated their tooling to new molds. Part of the reason for this binding is the stabilizer design on the Model M, which is about the 3rd worst I have ever seen from a smoothness standpoint. They use an older fashioned method of an entirely seperate barrel with a special stabilizer insert that if it is slightly misaligned binds like hell. Lubrication helps a small amount and the upside of this is that with the right PCB you can add new layouts using the same barrel plate. Wire stabilized keys are much better, found on boards like certain Model F AT's, but have more limited flexibility with layouts.

The keyboards are really heavy and seem like they'll last another 100 years. The terminal screens are also built like tanks, I would say they weigh at least 20kg's. The ones I have still work perfectly too and one of them is still in regular use. Amazing quality. Kind of wish I still had the IBM PC's a few users had back then too, they definitely had original model M's complete with the 5 pin DIN plug. Remember them well.

I started working in the IT field in 1988, and to this day I have kept and am still using the same Model M 1391401 keyboard I used with my work PC back then, on my current i5 processor PC at home - I will never give it up! I have an extra long PS/2 cable attached to it, and my mother board still has one PS/2 port on it - but I also have an active USB converter for it whenever I upgrade my motherboard in the future. When I type I have a habit of really pounding on the keyboard keys, yet this keyboard has withstood the abuse and held up perfectly for these past 30 years. I do have 4 or 5 spare Model M keyboards at home I salvaged from a couple pallets full of Model M's headed for the trash at one company I worked at, but I've never had to get a single one out of storage to replace this one!

That sounds like a 5250 keyboard. I used to use those attached to dumb (5250) green screen terminals connected to the IBM System36 and IBM AS/400 (now IBM/i). A keyboard made to be thrown down on the desk, or slapped around the PHB's head, in frustration and still work, lol. Built like a tank and a unique typing feel; although, that said, I've found the cherry MX blue (I think, thats what mine are) are damn close in feel noise and typing effort but I do miss the dual row of function keys as I still work on IBM/i using a 5250 emulator.

The 101 "Expanded AT" keyboard that was the first Model M for PCs, and the workstation/terminal variants that preceded it, are VERY SIMILAR in layout, except for the function keys move and added "middle" section, to that 84 key AT keyboard layout (and that 101 "Expanded AT" keyboard ALSO HAD A 5 PIN DIN CONNECTOR).

This brings back so many memories it's like time travel. Not exactly the same without the plastic cover they used to put on them.

And he didn't drop anything either. The quality was definitely there. But that ending, with the nipples... xD

Tactile feedback... omg I had this back in the day and I still remember how it felt to type on it

I have this keyboard. It's great. I have a variety of mechanical keyboards with Cherry Brown and Cherry Blue switches. I sometimes switch between them. But for straight typing, I prefer the Unicomp buckling spring.

It looks a bit weird for the walking, almost like he was greenscreened in. But since he picks up that first keyboard and the second casts a shadow on his sleeve it must be a really smooth gimbal on that camera.

thanks for posting this. cool to know the deeper history about this. I can tell you that I love my real model m that I bought used in 92. tens of millions of keystrokes on it - and not even the letters are worn off. Oh yeah - and I have been gaming the hell out of it for decades. I will be buried with this keyboard. :)
