The Greatest Kingsguard (Game of Thrones Lore) “Never did any Targaryen possess a Kingsguard who could equal the boy king’s first Seven.” Contact ► whycreatevideos@gmail.com Twitter ► whycreator
The mad king probably had the most bad ass kingsguard Barristan the bold and Arther Dayne the sword of the morning at the same time when they were both young. Now that is class.
they also had jaime lannister who was known to be a badass sword fighter so, arugably, the mad king had the three best swordsman in the world as his kingsguard at that point ( and throughout history )
@@hiddendagger7291 jaime is described by barristen as the best natural swordsman until he saw someone I can't remember. Jaime took off the head of an outlaw and crossed swords with the smiling knight and held his own. Jaime was 16 and physically strong enough to win a melee so I'd say jaime was close to his prime at that time.
@@princesurein7275 Naw jaime's actuall prime was after roberts rebellion but like barristan said jaime is probably the best natural swordsman who has ever existed
great knights similar to all the stupid honorable men like Ned to the point of stupidity. I like backstabbers because everyone only cares about their endgame nobody cares about the realm
Jaehaerys had the best kingsguard: all seven members extremely skilled and the mad king had the best knights ever in his kingsguard: Barristan and Arthur. He didn't have the best kingsguard because probably the other 5 althought still badass weren't as good as Jaehaerys's 7 members.
I mean, yet again, they had Prince Lewyn Martell, Ser Oswell Whent, Ser Gerold Hightower, and Ser Darry. All of them above average fighters and knights. What I think people forget is, at the end of the day, these guys made the Kingsguard for a reason, and that by itself is a estimate to their skill (besides robert's kingsguard)
Lord Commander Ser Gerold Hightower, the White Bull, was considered a great warrior. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be considered the equal to Jaehaerys' kingsguard.
@@ColdSleep well George RR Martin said that it is like that so there is no need for discussion. Jaehaerys had overall the best kingsguard ever if you take all members together but the two best warriors of all time were Barristan Selmy and Arthur Dayne as he said. Remember that Gerald Hightower was killed by Ned and his companions while Arthur Dayne managed to fight the best of them simultaneously and only was killed by backstabbing and Barristan was his equal. They were all great but Barristan and Arthur were just multiple leagues above someone like Gerold Hightower or Oswell Whent. The two of them combined would probably be able to crush any other kingsguard except the one of King Jaehaerys
@@williamparabellum2787 of course. I'm just saying there is a difference even among top tier fighters and while King Jaehaerys kingsguard had the highest skill if you combine every member the two most skilled individuals were of course Barristan Selmy and Arthur Dayne
“Ser Willem is a good man and true,” said Ser Oswell. “But not of the Kingsguard,” Ser Gerold pointed out. “The Kingsguard does not flee.” “Then or now,” said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm. “We swore a vow,” explained old Ser Gerold. i raise you this badass trio!
I was disappointed to see that, though you mentioned the attack on Queen Alysanne at Maidenpool, you didn't say anything about Jonquil Darke. She, too took part in the 'War for the White Cloaks' and acquitted herself well. Though she didn't win a place in the Kingsguard, after Maidenpool, Jaehaerys and Alysanne sought her out and she became the Queen's bodyguard, a Queensguard in all but name. She deserved a place on your list, too!
I still think Aerys’ Kingsguard is the greatest. You had Arthur Dayne, Jaime Lannister and Barristan Selmy. 3 of the greatest fighters Westeros has ever seen.
'ever seen' is super subjective. Frankly speaking the loyalty and devotion jaeheries kingsguard had shown, I don't think any other kings guard demonstrated that level of friendship, loyalty and devotion. Jaeheries first 7 was also very kind humans. Not to mention those 7 almost declared war on the entire kingdom just to protect jaeheries.
They might've been three of the greatest fighters but Jaehaerys' kingsguard were definitely no slouches. They probably could have fought Aerys' kingsguard to a standstill. But I believe Aerys' kingsguard fought for him out of honor, not true loyalty. Jaehaerys' kingsguard were extremely loyal.
GRRM literally said it himself that Jaehaerys’s Kingsguard was the best that any king had, every member was a legend, while Aerys’s had one of the best Kingsguard, half of its members were only legends, the rest top tier fighters but not not to the point of being legendary warriors.
A “Dark Kingsguard” is a fun thought exercise. For example, my Dark Seven: Lord Commander Criston Cole the Kingmaker, Ser Jaime Lannister the Kingslayer, Ser Gregor Clegane, The Smiling Knight, Lord Captain Victarion Greyjoy, Prince Daemon Blackfyre & Ser Aegor Rivers
@@beyreli3988 I included him because I wanted an infamous “Prince” in my Dark Seven as a counterpart to Prince Aemon the Dragonknight. The ultimate rebel “Prince” fits perfectly to this concept. Both were peerless swordsmen, so that’s a bonus
if I could choose seven knights from any time from my king's guard I would choose Arthur Dayne, Barrisstan Selmy, Joffrey Doggett, Samgood of sour hill, Duncan the tall, Aemon Targaryen, Brynden rivers and Brianne of tarth.
Aemon as Lord Commander, Arthur Dayne, Baristan Selmy, Jaime Lannister, Duncan the Tall, The Hound and finally, The Mountain That Rides. Almost too easy
I truly do hope that we learn more about Arthur Dayne in future books. He's so mysterious and so fascinating. I want to know what his other deeds were, who he was and even what he looks like
Barristan The Bold the greatest of all, may served the longest and has the most impressive feats. He was on par with Arthur Dayne skill wise, the only slight advantage according to GRRM is his sword; Dawn. Give Barristan a Valerian steel sword, and he is unbeatable in his prime in 1 on 1, and Dayne loses his advantage, and draw is more likely between the two.
I'm not sure about that because supposedly Jaime Lannister was on Par with Barristan and Jaime himself admitted that he was nowhere close to as good as Arthur Dayne.
@@dhruv9744 Jaime on par with old Barristan, even more so he implied three people in all of Westeros could possibly beat him and many think Barristan is one of the three in even his old age. Prime Barristan was stated by the author pretty much equal with Dayne but Dayne has Dawn which rivals Valerian steel in term of edge and strength. Don't refer to the show alone.
Thank you man! I know so much about the lore already but I'm always happy to learn more - these hidden nuggets are a welcome addition. I wish you well in your future videos - good luck with your endevours:)
I think Ser Criston Cole is best of all time. Many people cant see it because of hate as he was in team green but dude is a Freakin Beast on Battlefield with his weapon morningstar. He never lost any combat.
No feats, just once that 50 guys wouldn't take on 7 and the statement from a biased source that they were the greatest kingsguard. 50 guys would very rightly question if they could take on Barristan and Arthur Dayne (with Dawn) alone. I'm also pretty sure despite not readily knowing all of Aegon V's kingsguard any one where Duncan the Tall is the Lord Commander probably isn't anything to be fucked with, I actually think 60-70 guys would think twice when the Kingsguard is headed up by a 7ft giant of a man.
@@seponsacoolya He didn't have to be. If you were about to get into a fight with 6 of your guys vs a guy the size of Hafthor Bjornsson or Andrew the Giant are you guys not going to have second thoughts?
Antoine Vello he's taller than those men, but nowhere near the "size" of those men, assuming it's 6-1 I still damn sure wouldn't WANT to fight him but I'm sure, we win, that being said 6v1 I'd choose him confidently and every single time oppose to 6v1 and the one is Aemon Barristan Arthur or Jaime
@@seponsacoolya See that's all I needed you to say. Even 6 v 1 you still damn sure wouldn't want to fight a 7 ft tall dude bedecked in armor even though with such bad odds chances are you and your guys are going to win. That's how the 50 men vs the kingsguard works, sure they could win, but no one wants to get slaughtered before they eventually win. So Duncan doesn't need to be the S+ tier fighter that other members of the kingsguard were, he just needs to make a normal knight think "This dude might kill me and my friends," and I argue at 7ft tall even more people would think that.
Antoine Vello ...no... There's no IF in a 50v7 assuming there's no X factors involving position or weaponry, just a level field 50v7, the 50 wins, period. All I said is I wouldn't want to fight a 7footer but I'm damn sure not gonna back down to one especially when I have the odds, that's ME, now if assuming I'm an ill-informed uneducated serf or whatever that psychological effect could turn the tides in a lot of slanted battles...but unless I'm applying that hedge, it doesn't workout for Dunc, I don't WANT an issue with a 7ft giant but if the options are historically renowned killers, give me the giant every single time
Thinking about the fact that the Mad King had Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy in his prime, and Jaime Lannister on his Kingsguard. Considering these three are like three of the five most talented knights ever I mean god damn
If you haven't yet, can you do a video about all of the Robert's bastard children. I know the book covers a lot more than the show and I know more than one is still alive. Thanks... Love the videos
Barristan went full 007 to save the mad king at duskendale to save the mad king as well as Ended the last blackfyre rebellion and much more. We don't know Duncs full story yet either. Dunc faced the laughing storm in a trial by combat and won, not to mention he died saving what he could of the royal family at summer hall. The dragon knight was a badass too, but its hard to be more badass than Barristan, Grrm said they were basically equal until you add in dawn. Barristan hands down the greatest
I got F&B for Christmas and am stuck to it. Two things that stick out to me so far is I think that visenya used some sort of blood magic to create maegor since by all accounts she was most likely barren but out of nowhere gets pregnant and also maegor himself can't have a kid that isn't deformed so it reminds me of khal drogo still being alive because of blood magic but is a vegetable. Also I like the rule of exception that Jaehaerys created for the targaryens towards the faith which allows them to continue their incest
I think the fact that the coolest kingsguard members are those serving under bad kings (like the unworthy or mad king) sends the message that honor can be missused by those who wield it. Sure, Ser Authur Dayne or Aemon are cool and honorable, but they spent their life protecting those who abused power.
This kings gaurd still doesn’t compare to Aerys’s kingsgaurd. Think about it if you had all 7 of them vs all 7 of Aery’s, the mad kings would easily win.
@@BruceWayne-fj9bm while I agree that Arthur would win he would definitely take a beating. Selmy would be a tough fight but I believe Cole would overpower him with his raw strength and tenacity.
Jaehaerys' story will always be my favorite among the Targaryens and his kingsguard was indeed the greatest. I really hope we got House of the dragon soon so I can see this badass story play out
The fact that all of the KIngs guard died before their king did just shows how good they are. Not even barriston selmy could protect his kings with his own life
MY PERSONAL kings guard :Prince Aemon the Dragon Knight (LordCom) :Ser Duncan The Tall :Ser Arthur Dayne :Ser Criston Cole Ser Brienne of Tarth :Lord Lynol Baratheon :Ser Berristan selmy
A “Dark Kingsguard” is a fun thought exercise. For example, my Dark Seven: Lord Commander Criston Cole the Kingmaker Ser Jaime Lannister the Kingslayer Ser Gregor Clegane The Smiling Knight Lord Captain Victarion Greyjoy Prince Daemon Blackfyre & Ser Aegor “Bittersteel” Rivers
@@damomccormick4882 -Victarion vs Barristan the Bold: fulfills a stated personal wish of Victarion’s in AFFC -Brienne vs the Kingmaker: why not? Already prev. faced the Kingslayer -grim, unsmiling Bittersteel v The Laughing Storm -Ser Arthur the Sword of the Morning, Smiling Knight rematch !!!
The goat king had the goat kingsguard. Poetic. It's also crazy this one is considered greater than Aerys' kingsguard. Jaime, Barriston, and Arthur Dayne being on the same kingsguard is ridiculous
Maegor was a neccessary evil for the Targaryens if it wasn't for him the greatest King in all of Westeros would've never ascended to the Iron Throne he is the Young King, the Conciliator Jaehaerys first of his name Targaryen
Can you please do a video on Larys Strong "The Clubfoot", due to my liking of Littlefinger and characters of his ilk, Strong stood out to me as very interesting. Thank you.
Pate the Woodcock and Samgood are very cool. I remember thinking that when I first read Fire and Blood. This is my favorite kings guard, even over Arthur Dayne and those guys
Pate is particularly interesting. His spear fighting would suggest that he's Dornish, but his name is more common outside of Dorne. He is young so he wouldn't have been in loads of battles to gain experience, and he seems to be a commoner (or at very least a hedge knight) so its unclear where he would have got his training from.
@@thisguyhere5837My personal headcanon is that he’s a bastard born between parents from both sides of the Dornish Marches, one from Dorne and one from either the Reach or Stormlands.
my seven would be Sandor Clegane Gregor Clegane Arthur Dayne as lord commander Brienne of Tarth Jon snow Jaime Lannister with both hands and Daario Naharis pretty much unbeatable kingsguard.
In all the stories, w/ all the characters it, only one commented on the issue. That character says Daemon Blackfyre is the greatest swordsman ever. He claims Daemon could best any Sword of the Morning or even Prince Aemon the Dragonknight.
Do video about the princess who stole balerion. The one who died so badly that septon barth and the maester who treated her. Wouldn't talk about what happened to her. Maybe a speculation video. Please thanks
6:26 man i love the names in that story, here's pate the woodcock! loyal to Dickon steelbutt and under the banner of Woolcunt the brave. To this day he still remember his growing years when he was just a little page under the rule of SoftChode the Unerrected comonly known in the street of the Cockland's main cities as the Semi-knight and called the Wood of the morning by his enemies...These days were the good old days... days where he could still admire the beauty of the love of his life to be!!! Lady Deepcrack of the house Smellyfishcunthoe who had always been praised by everyone as a very generous house who produced many beautiful daughters and a single heir: Sir Boner Waters, who was later legitimized by his father, having only a single bastard and no male true heirs that was the only way he found to keep his family together under a male lead after his death... wich would come sooner than expected when Sir Coitus Humongous errected the long and thick shaft of his pointy spear and shoved it really deep into Smellyfishcunthoe's backside, blood pooring from his newly acquired slit, Smellyfishcunthoe cursed the name of Coitus with his dying breath, asking his guards to cut him down and piss on his corpse to avenge him. Ohhh i love the stories of this fantasy world!! A song of cocks and cunts.
GRR already said it. Ser Arthur Dayne is the greatest to ever wield a sword with Dawn, no one can beat him. But with 1 sword, Ser Barristan can stand toe to toe. But I'll take Ser Barristan over him cause of his achievements. Not the accolades.
My Kingsguard rosters of all time: Ser Rickard Thorne, Ser Barristan Selmy the Bold, Ser Duncan the Tall, Ser Criston Cole the Kingmaker, Sandor Clegane, Ser Aemon the Dragonknight, Ser Samgood of Sour Hill.
“So many vows... they make you swear and swear. Defend the king. Obey the king. Keep his secrets. Do his bidding. Your life for his. But obey your father. Love your sister. Protect the innocent. Defend the weak. Respect the gods. Obey the laws. It’s too much. No matter what you do, you’re forsaking one vow or the other.”
I honestly enjoyed King Jaehaerys arc way more than “Dance of the Dragons” I don’t remember every detail that I read, but yeah. Jaehaerys had an interesting life
If i had the ability to choose a kingsgaurd from Westeros Arthur Dayne Barristan Selmy Qhuorin halfhand Daemon Targarian The hound Duncan the Tall Oberyn Martell
Like to make the case that Ares had the most noble and cool kings guards of all the kings. Look at the names of the houses alone, Lannister, Hightower, Dayne, Dorry, Whent, Martell, Selmy. Connections to those houses alone could over throw a king. On top of this was the talent, Barston the bold, Auther Dayne sword of the morning, and Jamie Lannister the child prodigy. Ill take that vs any other kings guard in the history of this lore.
My grandfather got Fire and Blood but didn’t bring it with him because it was large and probably wouldn’t fit in his suitcase. We later saw it in a store while I was looking at Kingdom of Ash.
Robert was a beast in his prime. I think he could've taken on Arthur Dayne and beaten him if Arthur was using a regular greatsword instead of Dawn. With Dawn I'd say Arthur would win.
In mad king reign u can't count jaime as great kings guard bcoz at that time he was young and not that much strong he came in his prime in Robert's reign
Arthur Dayne is probably the best warrior ever followed by Barristan the Bold then maybe Jaime Lannister. But Jahaerys 7 together were the best kingsguard. There's many great knights in the history of the realm. Bold Jon Roxton. Lyn Corbray. Unwin Peake. Lyonel Baratheon. Daemon Targaryen.
Anyone else feel like Jahaerys was only normal because his mom was a velaryon? I kinda noticed in the Targaryen ancestry that the generation birthed from a non brother/sister incestuous marriage were less crazy than the offspring of King Uncle Daddy.
Idk I think the mad king still has them beat. Three knights on it where described as the best swordsman ever. The others are all extremely skilled as well.
