The Greatest NHL Rookie - The Teemu Selanne Story 

He was a great player and his rookie season was purely electric. The people of Winnipeg became enamored by his incredible skill early on and were further impressed by modest personality even after lighting up the NHL his rookie season. He always had time for the fans and those who came to cheer him on. I doubt there will ever be a better rookie player in the NHL.

With Finnish players, you should really do a video of Saku Koivu. One of the greatest in leadership in the NHL.

1992 was supposed to be all about Lindros "The Next One", finally entering the league after all the drama surrounding his draft. Ha, then "out of the blue", a Finn shows up and destroys the rookie record to take the spotlight away. Awesome! And yes, he feasted before goaltending got better, but if HE could step in and score 76 goals, why didn't the other established snipers notch more? The guy was magic.

Great memories! Winnipeg is always happy place for me.

Part of the reason he never scored 76 again was he hurt his knee in his 2nd season. He went from having 2 gears no one else did to merely being one of the fastest guys in the league. Part of it was improving goaltending. Part of it was hockey entering the dead puck clutch and grab era. Had he been 10 years older at his debut starying 1982 instead he would have finished with 800 goals.

Teemu was always one of my favorite players growing up. I didn't see him on the Jets but on Ducks, even though I always hated the Ducks I loved him

I was at the game before he beat the record. He scored 4 goals that night. I got to go to the jets vs Canucks game 4 in the peg that spring it was my first white out. Such memories.

Selänne would had longer NHL career but because Ducks coach didn't like him his 2 last seasons weren't optimal and he didn't want to continue. He also said he could have continued 1-2 seasons if Ducks had more suitable coach.

Teemu Selanne is a pure top athlete in every sport, without injuries he would have scored much more.

I took him in the last round of my hockey pool that year. Hoping that no one knew who he was. I remember the stares I got from my friends as nobody had a clue. Thank you Selanne for that miracle year and helping me win that pool.

Considering that he played a big chunck of his career during the dead puck and still out up the numbers he did is insane.Plus considering the fact that he played alot of his carert basically with one leg is insane.If he had played his whole career healthy,he could have put up 700-750 goals 1650-1750 points easily

What's amazing is mario lemieux played in 60 games. 24 less than most ppl playing an 84 game season at the time and scored 69 goals and 160 points

Goal scoring in the 92-93 season was off the charts in general. Truth is there is no way he could duplicate those numbers. There were five, 60 goal scorers, with another two at 58. Two 70 goal scorers, with Lemieux at 69. We can adjust numbers because of the era, but the fact he was tied for the lead league as a rookie is mind-blowing at the NHL level. Teemu was not the only one to have their career year in that season. This season was the end of the goal scoring era.

I remember watching this rookie season, in the old Winnipeg Arena, as it happened. I was 11 at the time, and my grandfather had season tickets to the Jets (we at approximatly the 25th row up from ice level, between center ice and one of the blue lines), and he took me (and sometimes my younger brother) to basically all games that weren't on a school night (Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, plus a few during Christmas and Spring break). I'd been attending Jets games since I was ~8 years old, but nothing prepared me for what I witnessed that year. It was transcendent...the puck seemed to follow Selanne, and he had so much speed and the slickest of hands, a nightmare of goaltenders everywhere. I was in the building for at least one of those hat tricks, just before Christmas. I didn't realize at the time just how special it was, but since then, I've come to know that this is likely a unique occurrence, something that we will almost certainly never see again. Back then, the average skill level of an NHL skater was maybe 25% less than it is today, plus goaltenders were, on average, quite a bit closer to the average male build than they are today (there used to be plenty of goalies under 6 feet in height...now, there are almost none). And thus, a guy like Selanne, who had all the talent, and who worked REALLY hard, could capitalize on the inefficiencies of the way the game was played to score so many goals. Nowadays, I think a 22-year-old Selanne would still be a Calder nominee, but I think he'd max out at about 80-90 points. To put it another way, if Ovechkin had been a rookie in 1992-93, he'd have put up 80 goals and 150 points. And if Ovi had played in the early '80s, the Great One would've had some competition for that moniker. So Selanne may have set records for rookie goals and points...but that doesn't necessarily mean that he is the greatest rookie. He's in the top 10 for sure...but considering how much the game has evolved over 100+ years (just to hammer this point home, curved sticks weren't even a common feature until the 1960s...and until 1956, a minor penalty lasted 2 full minutes, regardless of whether the team on the powerplay scored any goals), it's pretty hard to say who is the absolute best. Personally, I think that the history of ice hockey can be divided into at least 4 distinct eras [(1) Pre-original six, 2) Original six, 3) Expansion era, 4) Cap era...and honestly, there is so little in common between the early expansion era and the late expansion era that it might be possible to divide that into 2], each of which is like its own separate sport. The commonalities between the pre-original six era and the current day are basically: ice (made differently), skates (totally different though), a puck (that's the same basically) and sticks (made of different materials with different properties). And there are some rules that persist. Other than that, the game is ridiculously different now.

He played through the entire dead puck era and by the time the clutch grab and trap were gone in 05 he was past his prime. That's why his numbers dropped after the early 90s

@odd man Rush - 1995-96 Selanne had 40 goals 108 points. You omitted that when stating Selanne only had 2 40 goal seasons and 2 100 point seasons after 1992-93

It's tragic how Selänne never won a world championship or the olympics with the Finnish national team, thank god he eventually got the Stanley Cup, he deserved it and it certainly didn't come easy. Next one about Saku Koivu?

Only thing us Jets fans WISH we could have gotten? We got to see at the Heritage Classic game in Winnipeg. Teemu Selanne PLAYING with Dale Hawerchuk AND BEATING Wayne Gretzky and his Edmonton Oilers Alumni. AND Teemu Selanne WINNING the game for the Jets as well.

You could have mentionned his "dynamic duo" with Paul Kariya, one of the two best lines of the NHL during six seasons with Avalanche's Sakic/Forsberg... and historically one of the most memorables.

There was a mistake here: "would go on to have 2 more 100-point seasons"....: actually he would have 3 more: 1995-96 he had 108 points, 96-97 109 points, and 98-99 107 points. Nice video, though. Brings back memories. I started elementary school the same fall when Teemu started his NHL career.

While you're talking about records, you should try doing one about the single game point record in the NHL, set by Darryl Sittler in 1976. I say the NHL because another player had scored the same amount of points in a WHA game a couple of years prior.

Good video but its incredible to me that you can talk 11 minutes about Teemu and his incredible 92-93 season without even a mention of Phil Housley!! They only played together for that single season and Phil racked up 79 assists to Teemu's 76 goals. The chemistry was outstanding and neither were able to replicate the incredible points totals after Phil went to St. Louis for 93-94. Phil gets at least 50% of the credit for Teemu's record in my opinion... never mind not be mentioned at all when the legendary story in told.

Look, I love Selanne - without question he was worthy of being a first ballot HOF'er, and not to take away how utterly fantastic his "rookie season" was- it really wasn't his "rookie season"... Selanne was 22 at the time and that was his 5th season of professional hockey. I mean he was an international superstar at that point and that was the season Mogilny scored 76 goals as well, so it's not exactly like he was blowing the competition away - that was a pretty wild season... So yea it certainly was a season to remember without a doubt - a few things really needed to pointed out for context... I mean Gretzky scored 92 goals when he was Selanne's age, and I believe Mario put up 80-something at 22 so yea, he was technically a "rookie" but in reality he wasn't.... Believe me I would have loved to see an 18-year-old walk into the league and put up 76 goals but I don't think that will ever happen, and honestly Selanne shouldn't have been eligible for the Calder given the fact that technically that was his 5th season in professional hockey - and yes I consider top tier European leagues professional hockey, it may not be the NHL or AHL - it's still professional hockey regardless... Look if you're representing your country in the Canada Cup or Olympics then you're a professional.

As a Ranger fan, I wish we had traded for him in the 2009 offseason, instead of signing Marian Gaborik. Had we traded Nikolai Zherdev to Anaheim for Selanne, we would’ve traded for Dustin Penner in the 2011 offseason and Devin Setoguchi, as well and signed Gaborik then and still signed Brad Richards and Selanne would’ve reached the 52 plateau at the age of 41, surpassing Gordie Howe as the oldest player to be effective at such an age. We would’ve also kept Alex Frolov and we would’ve ended the 2011-12 season with 71 wins and 142 points and we would’ve swept Ottawa, taken out Washington in 5 games and taken out New Jersey and Los Angeles, both in 7 games and Henrik Lundqvist wins the Conn Smythe trophy. John Tortorella would’ve won the Jack Adams Award, while Lundqvist wins not only the Vezina Trophy, but the Hart and William Jennings Trophies, as well.

Very impressive but stop saying he is the greatest Rookie ever. Wayne Gretzky had 137 points as an 18 year old on a first year expansion team. Selanne was 22 when he entered the league after playing Professional hockey in Finland for 5 years. By the time Gretzky was 22 he was scoring over 200 points a season.

Teemu was a great player, and no doubt had an incredible rookie season, but the greatest NHL rookie won the Conn Smythe trophy before winning the Calder Cup as rookie of the year. That player was Ken Dryden.

A fantastic Ambassador to the whole world of Ice Hockey, Not just in Finland but the World. Simply put he is a living legend. Spending time with three teams throughout and half of the with the Mighty Ducks he is and will always be remembered. Once a Duck always a Duck ^_^ and what topped it off? He was able to win the Stanley Cup with Jean Sebastian Giguere before he too retired from Hockey :)

One of the true greats of the game. With that 76 goal rookie season, it makes you wonder why he took the next 21 years getting his next 606 goals (better goaltending, coaching dickturds with their "defence uber alles" mentality...) Mind you, those Jokerit jerseys are totally unforgivable.

An asterisk to this story is that Wayne Gretzky wasn't considered an NHL rookie due to the addition of the WHA teams to the NHL. If he was he would have beaten Teemu and Gretzky was younger.

i hate how all the scoring records were set like 30+ years ago when the goalies were garbage and the superstars would score some exorbitant amount of goals/points that will never be beat. Just watch highlights from games before 1995, the goalies just flop around smh.
