@@Freeland-FarmLet me try dear: I owe you $10,000. That is, (not only negative for me 😂) but a “negative” in my wallet just waiting to be realised some day. But… It seems…you are a particularly nice person. One day taking away that debt from me. Now, bear with me… Our common friend has a bucket of apples in his garden. We are allowed to take one to eat when we like. An apple falls down the tree, he always puts it in the bucket. He adds one to the bucket, it is a positive, in math signs “plus”. You or I take one, it is a negative, in math signs “minus” So, taking away something is “a negative” but by taking away my debt of $10,000 one ends up with something “positive”! Hence - Two negative makes a positive! So if do NOT (negative) need NO (negative) speed square = you actually need a speed square as two NO after each other cancel one another out. Kind regards Anders Sweden

Some people do, can’t tell you how many shitty cuts I’ve seen by people. There’s more hacks out there than not. Framers are some of the biggest hacks. Especially when using levels. They think a wall is level if the bubble is in between the two line, they don’t care if it’s not perfectly centered and then they are using a 4ft level on an 8ft wall, so that 2/4 inch turns into a half inch real quick. They don’t take the time to crown their lumber, they cut shit short, crooked, etc… but it’s just rough framing, right? They don’t care when the finish work needs to be done. I’d rather guys take a little longer doing this, than freehand and have 1/2” gaps on their rafter cuts at the bottom of the ridge

I'm a DIY who grew up around construction. Never saw a stair gauge before. Always just clamped the sleed square if I needed an angle other than 45 or 90, just like my Dad or uncles used to if they really really cared about getting it straight without the miter saw. This is much much more convenient.

As a carpenter for 100 yrs.. that only works when your saws brand new or close to it... use it every day and shortly that plate on it won't be true with the blade anymore and that trick won't work... then you do like normal and draw a pencil line and learn how to follow the line watching the blade...

The speed square was patented by Albert J. Swanson in 1925. Sliding brass gauges were used by French carpenters and cabinet makers already in the 18th century. After the Second World War carpenters and framers were already using this “new trick”. I’ve learned this from a gentleman born in 1931. He is still alive and was working well in his 80’s.
