As an avid umpire hater (former umpire myself), this is honestly very impressive. That level of consistency is fantastic and the accuracy is phenomenal. It’s real easy to make the safe call and even out the count when you’re not sure if it was a ball or a strike but he stuck to the zone perfectly. Also no Angel and it’s beautiful. Wonder how that happened
@@danielfrometa7867 It doesn't matter whether you're a doctor, truck driver or former ump- Angel Hernandez elicits the same opinions and level of respect from the entire plethora of the working sector.
Having a perfect strikezone in community level baseball (I assume thats what you call "pony baseball") is just impossible. you gotta give them a strike on the black every time or else it becomes an irl walking simulation game.
@@hippokrampus2838 Yeah had many of those old folks throwing soft balls that are like clipping the front part of the strike zone but landing at the catcher's feet and got spectators cussing for the "shit" strike zone
@Videos of My Loads 😩 the box on the screen struggles to correctly judge the vertical zone quite a bit. Other views of the pitch showed it was in the bottom of the zone, just the on screen zone was misdrawn.
@Videos of My Loads 😩 watch the part again, just without using the on-screen strike zone. Watching it slow-mo half the ball is at the height of under the kneecap. Tho this shouldn't be part of an argument, Spontaneous sport (this channel owner) even says thay not all on-screen strike zone is accurate.
@@TaggedByTimUmpires stop being paid when the season ends, just like the players. The top rated umpires for the season get assigned to the Wild Card and Division series. The top umpires from those move on to the Championship Series and World Series. As long as umpires keep working, they keep earning game checks. Angel Hernandez sued the MLB because he hasn't sniffed the postseason and claimed racism. MLB won the lawsuit by arguing it wasn't racist but because of his performance.
@@Nubin.szn5 It isn't umpire abuse to say the union keeps certain umpires in their jobs. They do. Once an umpire gains their membership in the union, they are basically untouchable.
One of my moms coworkers actually went to college with Pat. They still had a relationship so he was able to hook me up with some of his old gear and lineup cards. It’s was really cool to see that Pat got a ws assignment and even better that he had such a great performance
Sell some! Strike while the proverbial iron is hot! Maybe someone can extract some DNA from his gear to clone and raise generations of perfect umpires! 🤔
Thanks for recognizing the difficulty of being an umpire. It's shocking how little people know about the job but are so eager to get mad over small missed calls.
To clarify, we aren't mad at missed calls. We understand that humans are human. We're mad when a human blows a missed call and fucking acts like they're a damn robot who could not possibly have missed that call. Don't expect the fans to simultaneously give umps leeway for being imperfect while doing a tough job and then also accept that refs cannot possibly fuck up. It's one or the other.
yeah, the fact that a perfect game wasnt recorded before this after almost 10,000 games (statcast inception) is just nuts even more awesome it was done on the biggest baseball stage ever.
Yea I've known about his prowess for a while. I saw a video talking about him some time ago and the dude is phenomenal. It seems like he's always over 99%. That's basically God tier. To the point that if he says a ball that's clearly a foot off the plate is a strike, I'm going to assume that either the batter swung and no one else saw it, or the plate is simply in the wrong position.
If we just had an entire league of just this 1 umpire there would be no debate about robo-umps. Because he quite literally was better than a real-time robo ump (if they would use the same real-time measurement system as the on-screen box). Sadly we there is only 1 of this legend ;-;
Here is the primary argument against the automatic strike zone, did you miss what the accuracy was for literally the worst full time umpire in the MLB? The worst umpire has over a 91% accuracy. I think instead of trying an automated umpire, we should pull down the strike zone graphic on the broadcast. It isn't accurate and fans don't get that so they get pissed off when the umpire "misses" a call.
@@teebob21 fans and players nowadays are spoiled. Look back at the 90’s strike zones. Pitches were literally a foot outside and called strike 3 and the batter didn’t even bat an eye. Nowadays a pitch is outside by an inch and called strike one and players cry.
I don’t know much about the statistics, but I’d be curious to know about what percentage of those “91%” correct calls were challenging calls. If you’re calling all of the easy calls, but failing 50% of the challenging calls… then I’d say there’s easily an argument for automated umpires. I’m not making that argument, but I think one could be made.
It really was a thing of beauty, highlighted by the next ump’s performance, which created a strike zone that physics hasn’t found the geometry to describe yet.
Man I’m so happy this channel was recommended to me. Please don’t change your presentation as you grow, all your videos are hilarious and well put together, I look forward to more of them and watching your sub count increase.
Great video. This was a subject we had a conversation about at work the day after the game. And honestly.......I still don't think people understand what they were able to witness that night with his performance. FLAWLESS VICTORY!! Respect.
I'm glad the is receiving the recognition it deserves. Calling a perfect game should be as prestigious as pitching a perfect game - even if people disagree on the difficulty of doing either, both are peak performance at each of their craft and should be recognised.
Refereeing or umpiring is difficult, flat out. These levels, to be that good, is basically impossible. Hence no one has ever posted a perfect ump game, until the legend said “Hold my beer”. Amazing skills.
He should get to walk to the field with the full Goldberg intro with the sparks, the bodyguards, the smoke, the music, the crowd chanting his name every single game
tbh, just added you because most shorts or youtubes are about bad calls or umpire games. I haven't watched ball in a long time. The last 3 games In the WS were stellar! And I noticed how none of the highlights were about bad calls. You made a clip with info that is amazingly impressive. My only ask is that you told me more about the total umpire perf with the base umps and compared to the other games. But whatever, you have me subbed
Jomboy did a good job physically showing each pitch (including the ones that _could_ be contested, but not counted as wrong), and why he did such a good job. It's fascinating to see examples of strike and ball throws that were maybe two or three inches from one another, but were CORRECTLY counted differently. It really makes you appreciate when good ump-ing is done. I'm imagining two teams negotiating/discussing which umpires to use for the World Series (assuming they can even do that), and when Pat Hoberg is suggested for game X, Y, Z...both teams are instantly like "Yeah sure no complaints here." Sure some teams like that ambiguity to work to their advantage, but I imagine they hate even more a bad call.
As a former ump this is just impressive. Some borderline pitches especially on the outside or at the knees can be really hard to tell if it just ever so slightly knicked the zone. But this man did it with the fastest pitches in the game.
There will be more of them to come. Part of the beauty of technology like video and such is being able to look at something and see if you did the right thing. I umpire and have found it useful to look back at plays when I can, and if I could have a "scorecard" like this after every game I would without a doubt get better. Framing, not seeing the edges and corners quite right, etc can all be fine tuned from an umpires perspective just like players do the same thing. I really hope electronic umpires don't become a thing because if they do, how long until players become robot like to watch as in emotion and such on the field, part of watching the game is seeing the players emotion towards calls
How to get better at umpiring: (1) Go to camp. (2) Go to camp. (3) Go to camp. Far too many umpires below the NCAA level don't pay for training, which is available all summer long across the country.
it helps any umpire when the pitchers are throwing consistent good pitches[strikes or pitches nearly strikes] a pitcher that is wild every which way is a PITA to call a good game
I need to get into remembering the umpires cuz they can seriously fuck up your game if the calls are shit enough. I remember atleast 2 balls called during a world series game that were absolutely strikes lead to a walk when he would’ve had him striked out for sure on those pitches. Definitely wasnt in game 2 though
having umpired all levels of amateur baseball for over twenty years, and having two excellent mentors when i started, i'm not exactly sure why this level of accuracy isn't more prevalent. a consistent strike zone is a matter of training and discipline/choice, and i'm tired of hearing other umps giving excuses for missed calls...
wouldve subbed if you found tweets from people on twitter still complaining about the ump before the official perfect call scorecard was released, that would be hilarious
I remember texting my daughter late in the game and commenting that I thought the plate umpire was doing a great job. I almost never say that. I'm a former umpire and there is no way I could get >90% on balls and strikes - especially since I kept my eyes closed most of the time 😀
man, ima be honest with you guys.. the baseball game i find boring and just not for me, but the pageantry behind it.. the stats, the characters.. the unintentional drama surrounding the game is what makes it interesting to me. Congrats you guys have a sport that is fun at times.
So we just witnessed the first ever perfect umpire game in the history of the sport, possibly? It's possible it's been done before this was all tracked. But the fact that it has not happened in all that time until now is kind of crazy either way.
It's nice that we're actually celebrating great performances from officials who's job is to do well and get shit right. But still sad to see that those who doesn't, gets no repercussions and consequences from being bad at their jobs.
