Fun fact: During the Greek Civil War, both sides employed a unique form of propaganda: they would write their messages on the sides of donkeys, which were then let loose to wander into enemy territory. This unconventional method allowed each faction to spread their messages and disinformation effectively.

@Hadoken.
@Hadoken. 4 месяца назад
Well not exactly. The British instrumented the civil war because elections couldn’t be allowed with a communist party being popular in the region. As with all of these civil wars it’s a machination of the world powers over the smaller nations, and the simple folk pay the bill.

To those who think that the Greek communists had a chance in taking control, the Greek leadership of the communists was pretty much divided internally, not also counting the Tito-Stalin split on the global scale. Aris Velouchiotis (the field commander of EAM-ELAS, the paramilitary force of the Communist Party) was pretty much abandoned when he refused to surrender to the demands of the Varkiza agreement imposed by Nicholaos Zachariadis (the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece). Also, Zachariadis disagreement with Markos Vafeiadis (another leading figure of EAM) for the question of leadership, put strain in the relationship between those two.

@angelb.823 3 месяца назад
@@Mastersharkmapping That's the thing. The leadership of the Greek communists relied heavily on the spiritual guidance of the Soviet Union, while also being armed by the Yugoslav Partisans at the same time. The moment the Tito-Stalin happened, all of the Greek communists took sides with the Soviet Union, with Tito closing the Yugoslav borders with Greece. It was a lost cause from the beginning, since the Soviet Union agreed with the Percentages Agreement before and during the end of World War II, in which all of eastern Europe (minus Yugoslavia [which was eventually led by Tito]) was incorporated into the Soviet Union's sphere of influence, while Greece was incorporated into the West's sphere of influence (Britain and the USA). The Greek communists in Greece didn't know or realize this kind of agreement until much later on in the 60s.

My grandfather fought in this war with both sides . First, forcibly taken from his village by the Communist side with other men. He escaped and returned back, only to be conscripted by the army in a few days. People from the same family would rat out their relatives because they supported the opposite side, stupidity and some high ego leaders were the only ones to win. Luckily, he survived to tell me a lot of stories of these dark times and he would also show me pictures of himself back then. It was funny how many times both sides would start singing the same songs together while hanging out in the trenches.

@gnas1897
@gnas1897 3 месяца назад
Well up until 1948 the national army was a complete mess composed of conscripts (often communists) and a terrible chain of command. The communists on the other hand, were mostly veterans of WW2 (both soldiers whi fought in the national army against Italians and Germans as well as partisans) with very experienced commanders and incredibly high morale. This only started to change in 1948, when the national army made great investments in itself and most of the experienced partisans had been killed and conscription had begun on the side of the communists (which was very unpopular).

It wasn't a Greek "civil war". It was a war between Nationalist Greeks and pontian/pontic, asia minor turk communists. Anatolian "Greeks" are turks, persians, kurds, georgians, laz, armenians, chechens, dagestanis, etc. Especially from pontus region. Many of them were also turkophones. All of them score high Western Asia DNA. 8/10 leaders of the communists on average were pontic turks. Since they came here in 1923 without ever fighting for their lands, and finding an already liberated land to live in, and stole many fertile lands from actual Greeks. Around 1.5 mil came in 1914-1924, and many of them were not just dissatisfied with the lands the state gave them, they wanted even more, and also still had ties to Moscow, and the bolsheviks, especially when many of them were still living in the Caucasus such as Georgia (Batum, Sokhum, Tsalka, Tbilisi), Georgia/Armenia/turkey/USSR lands (Kars, Erzerum / Erzurum, etc.) and actual pontus. They never felt Greek and Greeks never liked them. Pontic turks have songs with lyrics that go like "In foreign countries I'm Greek but in Greece I'm foreign" crying about it. Pontic turk interests never aligned with those of Greece. Even when the mainlander Greeks fought in Anatolia in 1919-1922 to liberate it from the turks, almost no one from the "native Greeks" aka Anatolians volunteered, and they all supported the USSR which in turn supported kemal, which came back at them hard. And the few that volunteered had office positions away from the front, and a lot of them ran to the British and French embassies to go abroad and defect the draft. Pontic turks just want free gibz! If you check the biographies of the 2 most important leaders of the communists, aka Vafeiadis and Zakhariadis, you will see that both of them were pontic. Pontic turks wanted to detach all of Northern Greece, down to Thessaly and either share it amongst themselves or at least give it to Yugoslavia. If they could, they would turn all of Greece communist... But they couldn't. Now they are still coping about it.

Thessaloniki was freed by communists, EAM ELAS? By the way, the British were trying to give Thessaloniki to EDES and former nazi collaborators, who later were employed by the British and the Americans for the newly formed Greek National Army.. So, by what you're saying, your grandpa's father was with the communists and EAM ELAS during the Resistance and died fighting against nazis and their local collaborators, while after that, during the civil war, your grandpa's brother along with your grandpa, fought their father's former comrades, on the side of British, Americans and the army of former collaborators who managed to turn Greece into a capitalist protectorate. Both my grand-grandparents from mother and father side died in this war. One was killed from the communists on Grammos mountain as he was conscript of the army and the other was executed from the communists because he didn't want to give animals to feed them as he was a sepherd. But even though my family normaly hates communists... I don't. I actually agree with them now in many topics.
