Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir in Central Macedonia Greece, about 100 Km northeast from Thessaloniki.
It was created in 1932, and redeveloped in 1980. The size of the lake is about 72 km2
Lake Kerkini is now one of the premier birdwatching sites in Greece, as it is situated along the migratory flyway for birds en route to the Aegean Sea, the Balkan region, the Black Sea, the Hungarian steppes and beyond.
The lake is a technical work of great agricultural utility and provides a hydro environment for thousands of water birds, both rare and protected, riverside forests, water-lilies, and fish variety
It hosts 320 kinds of birds, especially non-migrants, of which 76 are recorded in the National Red Catalogue, while at least 31 of them are protected by The European Economic Community Directive concerning wild life.
In the surrounding area of Lake Kerkini there are at least 10 amphibian species (frogs, salamanders, five snail species, 19 reptile species (lizards, snakes, turtles) and a great variety of insects which play an important part in the food chain and contribute towards the biological resources of the lake.
What makes an exceptional presence is the Greek water buffalo's herd in the area as well as other cattle
Apart from the wonderful and rare bird species, there are 18 fish species in the waters. On the shores you can meet otters, red foxes, wildcats, weasels, European polecats, and, occasionally, wild boars and golden jackals coming down from the mountains to the water’s edge.
At the same time the wider region is a paradise for outdoor activities. Whether you fancy unwinding with long walks and romantic boat rides around the waters, or engaging in more adrenaline-pumping activities, such as horse-riding, bird watching, archery courses, mountain biking or off-road driving, the place is ideal.
