Bruce Willis recommended Michael Clarke Duncan(John Coffey) for this movie after working with him in "Armageddon." Mr. Duncan is also memorable in "Armageddon," "Daredevil," "The Island," "The Whole Nine Yards," and others.

You said that he should go to the doctor, but in 1935 there wasn't a heck of a lot the doctor could do. They didn't have the plethora of antibiotics they do now. They mention Sulfa in the movie but it just became available in 1935 and had lots of side effects (they mention vomiting). Some reactors mention cranberry juice, but good luck getting that in Louisiana in the middle of the great depression.

Agreed. Many watcher (reactors) forget or overlook the fact that this was set in 1935, the heart of the Great Depression. The drugs we have now, to treat such things, either had not been discovered/invented yet or else were not widely available.

Reactors who see Green Mile for the first time are always advised to see "The Shawshank Redemption" soon after, and vise-versa. Both are Stephen King stories and made into excellent movies directed by Frank Darabont. You will definitely enjoy Shawshank too. You may cry, but in a different way. And for a good, different kind of Tom Hanks movie, based on space history, do "Apollo 13" (1995). ✌😎

looked up online, it said average life for a mouse is 3yrs. If he passed at the end scene (maybe). 60 would be 20times longer than average. A person in reasonable health could live to 80 -100. So 20x that means he has a LONG time to remember what happened on the green mile. A very emotional movie, and they all did such a great acting. Without fail, everybody hates Percy almost immediately by then end no one feels sorry for him.
@gimmethunder
@gimmethunder 2 года назад
A couple things to consider about how long Paul has left to live: 1) How old was Mr. Jingles when he received the gift from John? Paul being in his 40s during the Depression, he would've probably been 50% of the way through his natural life. If Mr. Jingles was 6 months at the time, then John turned the remaining 83% of his life into 60 years. That's a 2400% increase to the natural life span. If Mr. Jingles was 2.5 years old, then he turned the remaining 17% of his life into 60 years. That's a 12000% increase over natural. Depending on how old Mr. Jingles was that percentage increase would then be applied to the remaining natural life that Paul had (assuming it worked that way). 2) Did Mr. Jingles and Paul get the same dose? There's no way of telling, but my gut tells me that Mr. Jingles received a bigger dose of magic than Paul. His was an uncontrolled transfer of the magic while John was trying to help lessen the pain on Del. Paul's dose was a controlled sharing of the magic to help give him insight on what Wild Bill had done. I feel like the uncontrolled transfer would have been more substantial, but that's just my opinion. 3) Would the same dose of magic have the same effect on Paul as it would a much smaller creature? Much like medicine, a dose that could cure an ailment in a mouse would likely not even be noticeable if given to a grown man. So, did the magic have a greater effect on Mr. Jingles because it was given to such a small animal? Those are just some things I think about when I wonder how long Paul has left. There's no telling how the magic actually works, so there's no way of answering the questions. I think I just hate the idea of Paul still wondering around at 900 years old waiting for his turn to die and like to think he won't have to wait that long.

Paul actually talks about it in the book. How the witnesses would tell their friends it was divine justice. “Del there burnt a bunch of people alive and we turn around and burn him alive.” BUT he is also very clear that it was the foulest thing in his life, “not just my working life, but my whole life.” Mostly because Percy didn’t do it for justice, but “because Percy had wet his pants and the little Frenchman had had the temerity to laugh at him.” The desire for atonement for how monstrous the execution was is a big motivating factor in why Paul pushes to save Melly.

Eminem is in 8 Mile. In southeast Michigan, there are a several east-west roads that are a mile apart, that are just named 5 Mile, 6 Mile, 7 Mile, etc. 8 Mile is significant among them because it goes all the way across the state uninterrupted, although it’s sometimes called Baseline Road in that stretch. But for that movie, it’s significant because it is the border for the city of Detroit and Warren, where he lived.

I've always thought that Mr. Jangles was brought back from the dead which took a lot of power, whereas Paul was just cured of a U.I which I assume would take far less, so whilst he would live longer than normal it wouldn't be to the same extent as the mouse. But what about the Warden's wife? She was cured of a huge brain tumour which again took a lot more power the Paul's cure so she would presumably live even longer than Paul.

They practice the process to make sure that the execution doesn’t go wrong in front of witnesses and so they maintain the respect that this harsh act needs. Note how Paul takes umbrage to Toot-Toot acting a fool and all the guards laughing at his antics during rehearsal. Even after Arlen Bitterbuck’s execution, Brutal takes issue with Percy talking smack and actually hitting the corpse. “He’s square with the house again.”

Dawn Marie Michael Clarke Duncan aka John Coffey was like his character, a gentle giant according to his family and friends. Big Mike worked in his previous career in security as a bodyguard for "celebs". He worked on different assignments while doing some commercials. Big Mike changed his career path after the death of Biggie Smalls aka Notorious BIG in a drive-by shooting. Big Mike went into acting fulltime. His big break came in 1998 when he was in Armageddon with Bruce Willis. Producers and casting were looking for an actor to portray John Coffey for the Green Mile movie. Bruce heard of this movie developing, so he made a suggestion of Michael Clarke Duncan for the role of John Coffey. Big Mike gotten the role thanks to Bruce Willis. He and Bruce worked on another movie called The Whole Nine Yards with Mattew Perry of Friends Fame. Sadly, Big Mike died suddenly. During his private funeral service with family and friends, Tom Hanks eulogized Big Mike.

Tom Hanks movies. "Splash" and "Big" are two fantasy movies with a lighter tone than this. "Joe Versus The Volcano," "Sleepless In Seattle," and "You've Got Mail" are three that costar Meg Ryan and a favorite you will certainly like [again a much lighter tone but based on history] A Leage of Their Own. Any of these are "must watch" Hank's movies.

This is a Christmas movie. I know that sounds way off, but it may as well be called the Miracle Mile. John Coffey... check out the initials. Power of healing? Remind you of anyone? "He didn't just just fall out of the sky..." Actually, he did.

The reason there are people there for the executions is that a certain number of witnesses are required by law and the victim's family have the right to also witness. The reason he doesn't want any laughing is the fact that, no matter what the crime, they are ending another person's life. It should be done with a certain degree of decorum.

A domesticated mouse's lifespan is roughly 1,000 days. There are exceptional cases of course where they might live 20-30% longer, but it's an exception, not the norm. In the wild, 12-18 months. Paul, while not immortal, would still have a good while to go if Mr. Jingles was still kicking 60 years after the prison days.

Good to see and hear you again. I knew that there would be tears. Every time I see it I get teary. Love your accent and your reactions. Stephen King said it's not a coincident that John Coffey's initials are the same as another famous healer in history, JC.

***The following is based on research done on the death penalty and therefor may be subject matter that could be too dark for some. It is real and not at all graphic but still may disturb some*** The last public executions in the U.S. took place in 1936 (near the time of this story). There are still regulations that require witnesses present at the procedure but they are strictly administrated. The film takes place in Louisianan (where the law specifies there will be no fewer than 10 and no more than 12 witnesses total with 5 being administrators, legal professionals, medical personnel and clergy) but, since the movie was filmed in Tennessee where the laws on execution very are similar and the Louisiana laws are much more in depth with wording, I'll defer to the description from Tennessee. The following list is taken directly from the website of the Tennessee Department of Corrections: Eligible witnesses include: Immediate family members of the victim. (They must be at least 18 years old.) The warden of the prison or the deputy warden. The sheriff of the county where the crime was committed. The offender's spiritual advisor or the prison chaplain. The prison physician. Attendants deemed necessary by the warden to carry out an execution. Up to 7 members of the media selected in accordance with the guidelines promulgated by the Department of Correction. The condemned offender's immediate family. One defense counsel chosen by the offender. The State Attorney General or designee. (Tennessee Department of Corrections Web Page) As time went on, these regulations were modified so that the witnesses are still required but a barrier (curtain, blinds, blank wall, etc..) is drawn between the actual room and the public witnesses' room prior to the moment of execution and reopened after the doctor certifies death so the witnesses can confirm the execution was successful.

Mice can live 6--7 years if they don't get killed in the wild, or are cared for in captivity from birth. So Paul might live for several hundred years.....and I wonder how old John Coffey was? Did you notice all the large scars on his body and arms? Looked like scars left from being whipped. I love this movie. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan

"How long does a mouse live?" - really depends for most animals... For instance, in the wild most raccoons only live maybe 3 years due to disease & parasites, but in captivity as a pet they can live up to maybe 20 years (more typically 10-15 like a cat or dog). Opossums on the other hand rarely live even 3 years in captivity. I doubt a mouse would make 10 years even, but then I've heard of a house cat hitting 24 - its rare but possible, my current (litter-mates) two cats hit 16 in May, the first cats I've ever had live to see 15 even.

Assuming a mouse's natural lifespan is 2-3 years, Paul could live to be over 2000.
