"Yeah, you try it -- go on. You'd be on the bread lines before the week is out." One of the reasons Percy has as much leverage as he does is that this is during the Great Depression, so jobs -- especially well-paying jobs -- are scarce. Odds are that, if one of the guards was to be fired, they'd be unemployed for a long time and would need handouts from the "bread lines" in order to survive and support their families.

Not to mention that prison guard is not exactly a high tier job with many prerequisites. Nowadays you need to be half of a social worker and have the education for that, but in the 30's and in the U.S. where there never was a widespread idea of re-integration? No.

I used to love this movie until I learned of the story of George Stinney., a 14 year old boy who is the youngest person in America to be put to death…by electric chair. It was too close to this movie to believe Steven King made it up. George wasn’t a giant of a man who was a wizard. He was a skinny boy that the police bribed into signing a confession with ice cream! Read his story, then think of “The Green Mile”. Will it still be a beautiful movie? After learning of George Stinney, The Green Mile made me angry.

8:27 - Mae West was indeed a very beautiful movie broadway/star of the 1920s and 1930s: Many of her movies were censored because they were deemed too raunchy, she was Liberal for her time and outspoken. Think of her as the sex symbol of that era (Like Marilin Monroe or Madona would be later on). So when old toot-toot says he wants her to sit on his face as a last rerquest, he's pretty much asking for an impossible thing to get as well as refering to a celebrity woman that all the guards there probably fantasized about before. 11:58 - A Hellraiser is someone that cause trouble, often violently (Who litterally "Raises Hell")

11:48 - "I can't imagine what he's going through"..... be glad you can't, Dasha. I've been where he has. While it wasn't brain cancer, I lost my first wife to cancer back in 2006. I know what it's like to be told "There's no hope" for the one you love more than anything. Rose was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2003, and medical science gave us three more years together. But in the end, the cancer finally won. That was the event in my life that changed me more than anything else. Up until then, we had been inseparable. We had lived together, worked together, and basically did everything together. I wouldn't wish that kind of pain on anyone. Before she died, Rose had promised me that, when the time was right, she would send me someone so that I wouldn't be lonely for the rest of my life. She kept that promise. I now have a wonderful wife, who, like Rose, stuck with me through the bad times, as well as the good. Katina and I have recently celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. The impact that Rose had on my life, affects me even 15 years after her passing. She was a wonderful woman, and she cared very deeply about my happiness, as I did hers. I know that, somewhere, she is still smiling down on me to this very day. The Green Mile is one of those movies that, no matter how long it is, is well worth viewing. You don't even realize that you were watching a movie for that long, it's so good. We are fortunate to live in a time where classics such as this are available to us.

Another moving reaction from such a sweet girl. In spite of all the tears, I know you enjoyed it very much. Maybe treat yourself to a 'feelgood' next. Fyi, Mae West was a old time screen siren who specialised in risqué comedies. Rita Hayworth (the poster girl in 'Shawshank') was also an old time screen siren famous for her flamboyant dancing, although the one we see in the cell near the end Is 60s pinup Racquel Welch. And the old 'flicker' features tap-dancing legend Fred Astaire singing 'Cheek to Cheek'. I think the movie was 'Top Hat', from around the early 30s.

For me it was "we each owe a death, there are no exceptions" which my grandfather taught me as a kid years before this movie was made, I'd told him that I hoped he would never die, and rather than let me live in a fantasy, he taught me to appreciate what I have while I have it... I still wish he was alive today. He was an exceptional man and I miss him every day.
@83gemm

@@toastymarket4089 I know that’s typically the line that gets people and it is beautiful. I worked with kids for ten years and, almost entirely, they are loving beings. You love them, they love you back and in a complete and trusting way we lose when we get older. What Wild Bill did would absolutely work and it’s a kind of evil, using the holy love of kids for their family to murder them both, that I can’t handle. John saying, “That’s the way it is every day. That’s the way it is all over the world,” just guts me.

@@83gemm Thankfully I live in a society where that hardly happens (that I can see) however whenever I do see it, that line reverberates in my skull. All we can do is be loving and aware that not everyone is... for whatever reason they may have. Intolerance has it's place (no one should put up with being walked all over) but seeing people use it as their first go to when they disagree with something is disheartening. Sorry if it seems like I'm lecturing, I try to teach my daughter well and it rubs off onto everything >

If this movie doesn't leave you in tears, you weren't paying attention. I hold this movie as one of the most perfect movies ever made. Every scene, every character, every line of dialogue, it all comes together into a perfect work of cinematic art, full of humor and horror and love and hate and sorrow that creates an overwhelming emotional experience that definitely leaves its mark on everybody who watches it. The acting was amazing. Michael Clarke Duncan's performance as John Coffey is easily one of the best performances in movie history. Great reaction to The Green Mile. It is such a powerful film, that strangely does not get the same kind of accolades that it's sister film The Shawshank Redemption does. Every part has character and dimension, and every actor nails it big time. Another great Tom Hanks film that often gets overlooked is his 2002 film Road To Perdition, with Sam Mendes. One of the few darker roles he has done, and with an A List cast. Another two classic Oscar winning drama's that might be worth a look too are: Rocky (1976) Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire Good Will Hunting (1997) Matt Damon, Robinm Williams, Ben Affleck

Dasha, two suggestions for you to review; "The Sting" an epic film from the 1970s, set around 1930, and "Castaway", another classic Tom Hanks film that isn't as sad as this one.

You are a beautiful person. You are also a beautiful young woman. Seeing your reactions to this wonderful movie brought me to tears when you cried and made me so happy when you smiled or giggled - Thank you so much for this reaction. Edit: at 29:04 you said that you didn't understand because you saw tears. It has always been my opinion that when John transferred the sickness into Percy, he showed him what Bill had done and even Percy as evil as he is couldn't take the images of the girls and what Wild Bill had done to them and so he cried even as he killed Bill for murdering the girls. I know that is probably not what happened but I would like to believe that even Percy had some humanity in him and no one that is not an absolute monster could see that and not be moved to tears.

I only just discovered your existence, Dasha, a few weeks ago. It is always a hit or miss with RU-vidr reactions. It has gotten to a point where I test them with the response to THIS particular movie. And it is official. I am grateful for your existence! You have a pure heart and soul! I love you, my friend! Nothing romantic. Just love. Like all of us, you are deserving of a company of friends and family who will simply accept you with nothing but love! 😇❤

Fortunately I read the book long before this movie came out and I knew exactly what was going on. I watch this hoping you catch on immediatly. If you do that's a sign of a well made movie ,especially considering how large the book was.

You're so adorable when you laugh, it's a nice change with all the crying too, I feel like you've had your share of crying in all the reactions you've done! Definitely one of my favorite movies even if I always cry at the end. I guess when you watch Tom Hanks movies one after the other it's hard to not think of the other characters, was so cool of you to think of Lieutenant Dan, and the two have done other movies together too. Even that other guy with a family, he was the sniper in Saving Private Ryan. Thanks for reacting to this :)

I doubt you'll see this but if you do can you do a poll of other Tom Hanks films to watch I know you've seen Forrest Gump since you said Lt. Dan idk about the rest of his films but here's a few off the top of my head. The Terminal Captain Phillips Road to Perdatio Apollo 13 Saving Private Ryan These are also good but they're more of dramadies(comedy & drama) so u can put them on a separate list. Big A League Of Their Own Catch me if u can That Thing You Do

It's implied in the book that John Coffey had lived for hundreds of years. He didn't want to live anymore. While executing him was seen as a kindness, Paul ended up experiencing the same thing with his lengthened lifespan. Good reaction, Dasha.

John Coffey would rather let the girls' parents think he murdered them than have them live with the guilt that they let the real killer into their home and gave him access to them.
