Ken Igo and Russ Mowry of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, developed the Green Weenie fly over 50 years ago. Fred, Mowry's friend and fishing companion, introduced the fly to South Central Pennsylvania, where it quickly became popular. Charlie Meck's book Pennsylvania Trout Streams and Their Hatches also helped spread the fly's popularity by discussing his first use of it while fishing with Mowry.
The Green Weenie is a fly that mimics the natural characteristics of insects, especially the larva of the Geometer moth. It's effective for catching sunfish, crappie, bass, and trout. The Green Weenie is also known as a "junk" fly, but who cares what 'they' think. It's different from most terrestrials like hoppers, beetles, and ants, and you typically fish it like a nymph rather than on the surface.
