One of the reasons sailors come to the Caribbean is to enjoy its beautiful white sandy beaches and Chrystal clear waters. The Grenadines, is the perfect example of this "sailor's paradise". In this episode, we explore the breath taking islands of SVG, get a little souvenir capsule for you and of course adding a few Uma DIY projects here and there: We build our rain water catchment system and our cockpit shower.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give it thumbs up, it helps us out a bunch :) And SUBSCRIBE if you haven't already!

A couple of thoughts: 1) I would always let the first few minutes of rain go down the drain to wash away dust, dirt and salt from the deck. The tanks would stay cleaner. 2) I would plumb in an overflow so that once the tanks are full the remainder will go overboard and not in to the bilge. Thanks for sharing!

Just recently finished binge watching the first 91 steps and though it is a trivial little thing I REALLY want to thank you guys for your audio leveling. Not only do I not need to crank the volume in order to hear what's happening but I don't have to lower the volume every time the music is on nor raise it back up once the dialog begins. I really wish every channel paid attention to that. Thanks for that and all the other work it takes to make such a great show.

Good job Dan. This system is SO basic (and quite widely used) I have no idea why there are so many people on here who don't seem to grasp it??? As long as you don't try using it while actually sailing along, and that you let the boat wash down for 10mins to let all the encrusted salt wash off it will work fine, just like it does for everyone else. No need for second valves (!?!?!?!?!) and filters etc etc. Keep doing what you are doing - keep being supremely practical and thinking outside the box.

Awesome water catchment guys. that must feel so awesome solar power . electric motoring . solar cooking . you guys are so inspiring. and now you are catching water without an expensive water maker. nothing more refreshing than ice cold rain water with just a hint of lime in it.

I did very similar system on my Person 424 and cruised the Bahamas for 8 summers lasting 6 t0 8 weeks and only had to get water once in 8 years. A 30 minute shower would fill our tanks , we carried 160 gallons but had 5 persons on board. Each took showers every day but shipboard ( rinse down. soap up, rinse off) using. I would suggest using second valve to keep salt water out your tanks also a charcoal filter. Love your channel.

Great idea for easy rain water collection, but I agree comments from others: the chances of getting salt water into your fresh water tank is very, very high. At the minimum you should install a shut off valve in the fresh water line right after the Y. Fresh water has to be positively protected. The lack of shut-off valve makes it a passive protection. Good luck!
@Acceoss
@Acceoss 7 лет назад
Absolutely agree. Not only saltwater but other contaminates will find it's way into the main tank and could potentionally make it dangerous to drink
@captainsailnator
@captainsailnator 7 лет назад
Might be better to fill up a seperate tank with it and use it for gray water ...
@edl617
@edl617 5 лет назад
i like the way he put the Y valve with the fresh water flow UP not down or sideways. if they let the rain rinse off the salt water from the boat then throw the valve that will work. But maybe Dan will decide to put in deck fills for both water tanks. Then after a couple of minutes of rain all that is needed is to take the caps off the fresh water fills caps

I loooooved this place (as I loved petit tabac, Mayreau and Tobago Cays!) It remembers me soooo much souvenirs ! I was pretty young, with my parents cruising on a sailboat, and all people we met on this island kept asking me "Are you married ? Do you smoke gandja ?". It was so funny to me! Thanks for sharing your cool experience at see guys. Makes me realise how much I really want to sail again this part of the world.

Brilliant idea. I don't know too many boats where the rain scuppers are connected to plumbing through the hulls. Lots of cockpits drain that way but your solution is great! And super easy. YOu wait for the dirt to rinse through a little and flip the valve to fill! So slick!

One tip bib of advice would be to ensure one things. A small filter is placed in the line somewhere to catch debrie that would come from the deck...ie; anything from flying fish remains and accumulated dirt. If your water gets allot of micro organisms living in there...in no time, poor water and bad smells will be the reality. Add some vinegar to your tank, in small amounts...should take care of it but a quick cheap filter will stop 95 percent

Great video guys. I liked your project for collecting the fresh rain water. I think you have to observe the tank while the rainwater is filling in otherwise the water will come out of the tank as your first trial. I am also looking forward to see your new dinghy motor. What a brilliant an innovative idea for water collection. But I would be very cautious to connect the two tanks together - at least when you sail. The principle of "free water surface" is well known issue when it comes to the boats stability. This is among the first things you learn when you take a maritime education. The way to reduce stability issues is making the surface as "short as possible". That is the reason there are one tank on each side, not one large one whith a long free surface.. Larger ships with tanks normally have them separated with a wall for this reason. As long as the tanks are full, it is no problem, but when the surface is free, it can be dangerous. If there is a valve between the tanks, I would be very carefull to keep it closed except from when you fill them up.
