Also, the new ship, CVN-80 will have portholes and a few other pieces from not only CV-6, but my dad's ship, CVN-65. My dad did a Vietnam tour on CVN-65 in the early 70s. I hope construction is done soon enough that he can go on a Tiger Cruise on the new boat. Not quite. The Enterprise's airpower was augmented by the Marine squadrons on Guadalcanal and Tulagi as well as the islands in the lower end of the Solomons chain, and HMS Invincible had been seconded to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Also, the Japanese were running out of planes and stretched intolerably thin on oil to fuel their ships when the Guadalcanal campaign was reaching its climax in November of 1942. After they lost the Night Battle of Guadalcanal it was pretty much over for them in that campaign but they had already been pushed to the point where it had become unsustainable to continue their effort to retake Guadalcanal and fight on New Guinea.

Fun Fact about the Star Trek Enterprise, there 9 Starships Named Enterprise: NCC 1701, 1701A, 1701B, 1701C, 1701D (from Star Trek: The Next Generation) E, F(small showing in Star Trek: Picard), and G, IF one Counts NX-1 Enterprise from Star Trek: Enterprise that brings the total to 9.

It's interesting you used an Excelsior-class as your Star Trek Enterprise of choice. That class includes the Enterprise B (technically the fourth Starfleet ship named Enterprise, after NX-01, NCC-1701, and NCC-1701-A), though the Enterprise B was visually distinct from other contemporary Excelsiors. Enterprise B is by no measurement the best-known Enterprise, having starred for a handful of minutes in a movie and then getting out-shone by the Enterprise D in the same film; it has not appeared much since then, apart from flashback episodes and beta-canon. Even so, the Excelsior-class in general was a major evolution in ship design from the Constitution, so in some ways, it's not unlike the nuclear Enterprise compared to the WWII one. A bit of a continuation of this legacy, NASA's first Space Shuttle was named Enterprise after Star Trek's hero ships, so in some ways, Enterprise lends its legacy to space exploration just as much in reality as it does in fiction. NASA's Enterprise was originally going to be named differently, but NASA received so many letters from Trek fans that they decided to change the name. Unfortunately, the Space Shuttle Enterprise was an earlier design that was meant more to test aspects of the program, and thus, never actually made it into space. On a different note, Trek's Enterprise was nearly called the Yorktown instead. It wasn't only because of Enterprise's legacy and fame that Roddenberry chose Enterprise, either - his choice of name followed the commissioning of the nuclear USS Enterprise, meaning that at the time, "Enterprise" was synonymous with "cutting edge" among naval enthusiasts. Roddenberry wanted to show humanity's advancement and give an idea of what we could accomplish in 250 years' time, so he actually rejected some near-future concepts like combat laser weapons (it would take decades and not centuries to get those), instead replacing them with "phasers". Even so, many concepts Star Trek pioneered have been made real now. The Enterprise name helped establish both that the hero ship was high-technology and that it was among the best of the best.

One minor correction. Gene Roddenberry named his Starship the USS Yorktown. It was the Network that looked at it and said "Make it the Enterprise! Everybody loves that ship". In an ironic twist, following the Enterprise's destruction in STar Trek III the Search for Spock, the crew gets a new ship at the end of Star Trek IV the Voyage Home. This ship is dubbed NCC-1701-A The USS Enterprise-A. This new ship had originally been Enterprises sister ship... the USS Yorktown.

What's disheartening is that not only was cvn6 scrapped and not made a museum, but so was cvn65, which had her own decent legacy. Both of these ships deserved their own spot moored to a dock for people to visit. At least we still have four Iowa Class ships to visit.
@MainMite06
@MainMite06 Год назад
CV6 had a ton of damage, but definitely it could've been saved for public display in a special dry dock to keep salt water damage from harming the ship more. However the USN found her useless to repair and the funds to save her were too small, then she was scrapped with the metal being saved for CVN-65, & a number of preserved items being transferred to her. Today most of the only Carriers turned to museums are the giant Essexs & CV-41 Midway. The Essexs were retired after serving ~45+ years after WW2 and have gone through structural overhauls throughout time. CV6 shouldve been easier to fix knowing her service life was only 8 years active, with bombing damage & kamikaze damage.

“It is my privilege to recommend a large number of decorations after Guadalcanal, but few give me as much pleasure as recommending the Enterprise for the presidential unit citation. She is obsolete now. But, as Secretary Forrestal said, “She is the one ship that nearly symbolises and carries the Navy in this war.” Admiral William F Halsey.

U.S.S Enterprise was both highly respected and, equally, feared by the Japanese Naval forces. mere mention of her presence in a battle inspireed both fear and doubt in many Japanese admirals and captains. Often referring to the ship as Awe Inspiring and a force to be reckoned with.

Heard this joke/story recently. Parts salvaged from USS Enterprise, CVN-65 are to be used in the construction of USS Enterprise CVN-80. It is said that there were parts of USS Enterprise CV-6 used in the construction of CVN-65. This means that USS Enterprise CVN-80 is not a new ship. Rather it is merely the second massive refit of the original aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CV-6.
@MainMite06
@MainMite06 Год назад
Are you calling CVN-80 a *theseus ship* because a few items were inherited from CV6 that were given to CVN-65? In a similar vein Cassin & Downes became *theseus destroyers* because their hulls were replaced and fitted with their original surviving equipment and original designation numbers?

The USS Maddox also claimed first blood in the Gulf of Tonkin. Unfortunately, they just wanted to start a war though and never shot anything. Also strange how the best versions of anything usually get destroyed before the claim can be verified. Always in interest to destroy your best things.
@sirboomsalot4902
@sirboomsalot4902 Год назад
That’s not actually true. USS Maddox actually was attacked by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats on August 2nd, 1964. This has been confirmed by the Vietnamese themselves. At the second Gulf of Tonkin Incident two days later on August 4th, however, there was no actual threat. USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy just started shooting at a faulty radar contact (which is actually fairly common). However, as it was the second incident on the 4th that caused the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, it has led to the common misconception that nothing actually happened in the Gulf of Tonkin at all
