I remember sitting in sushi bar with vegetarians who proclaimed whaling is barbaric as they slopped down tuna, and I thought to myself, "You've got a lot of ducking nerve." When a tuna is killed it feels pain too.

@bethechange4934

I was wondering about the sustainability of this act. I found a rough estimate to be a population of 800,000 pilot whales (on the low side) so the 1700 number (high side estimate of harvest and probably more like 800) would be .002%. 800 would be .001%. That seems to be one of the most sustainable fisheries imaginable and would even be sustainable at a harvest of around 24,000 whales assuming a 3% of total population growth rate. Sharks are not faring so well. In the last 30 years, we have decimated shark populations which are at about 10% of what they were 30 years ago, mostly for shark fin soup with the fins cut off and the body thrown overboard. The majestic White Tip Shark is down to less than 1% of its original population simply because they have very large fins. If we are going to pick up a cause and run with it, shark preservation is really what we need to look at right now. If we are going to look at another metric, consider this. An average pilot whale weighs 4000 lbs so say they provide 1600lbs of edible meat/blubber. Fins taken from shark on average are around 4 or 5lbs. That means you would have to kill at least 320 sharks to get fins equal in food value to one Pilot Whale. I think Sea Shepherd folks might consider on shifting their focus to the plight of the sharks.

From where do you get your estimate? No one has any idea how many Pilot whales there are in the North Atlantic. The islanders kill the most whales and dolphins in the world per capita. The meat is toxic with methyl mercury, so only small amounts are eaten. What drives the islanders to kill is for pleasure, sport and out dated tradition. The islanders have many other sources of food, and one of the worlds highest standards of living, yet they pretend they need it to survive.

+ChinaLake100 yes I remembered so I went on the NAMMCO website and checked. The latest figures they have put the population, probably, between 75,000 and 250,000 for those in the north west Atlantic. Globally the number of pilot whales is estimated near the 800,000 mark, I can't remember the actual figure but then it bears no relation to the grind so I would have just browsed past it. I don't believe everything that I hear on a video, I go and check. Now maybe you can tell me why the 800,000 figure is not important when considering the grind.

People from around the world telling them that this is wrong because it's inhumane. So what exactly does that mean? The whales are free and left alone until hunted and killed whereas the meat that you find in your supermarket has been imprisoned from birth and until put to death. So what sounds more humane to you? Those that argue "But you can just get all the food you want from your local supermarket" aren't thinking it through, cause that would mean a lot more food being imported and foul being used. This would also mean that what they're saying is that it's completely fine that their country is killing animals and selling them to us to eat but it's not alright for us to provide our own. The tourism industry is doing just fine and growing. If people want to visit they will need to visit the islands as they are. If people around the world were able to dictate others how their culture should be there would be no reason to visit other countries and experience their culture, because they've already killed those cultures, if you know what I'm saying.

I'm in full support for the Faroes because it's a part of their food source. People who are against it that are not from the Faroe islands don't have the rights to just waltz right in and tell them to stop. Those Sea Shepards can't see both sides. Just because they're killing whales for food doesn't mean they're doing it for fun as well. What about the other animals who are being forced feed, locked up, and in poor conditions in order for them to just get slaughtered in the end? I don't understand how you could simply think that what they've been doing for years is wrong. I feel bad for the people of Faroes who are being ridiculed and out casted by other people who are irrelevant to the matter online. Just like how that one dude posted a picture of himself and the whales and got blasted with hate. Everyone who discriminates needs to calm down and look at the matter with their perspectives. There's no need for them to get arrested as well... The Grind isn't even illegal. In fact, the only illegal things going on are the people arresting them. They have no say in the matter. Let the Faroes be and go on with their lives without people's opinions getting in their way. I'm an Asian Canadian and I support their way of life. I'm so disappointed that people can't see that what they do is all a part of nature.
@roysinar8238
@roysinar8238 8 лет назад
If it was for food I would suggest there was a lot more weight to the killing of the whales, but its not. The meat and blubber are toxic and as such there are strict medical guidelines to how much anyone should eat per day. It is no longer an essential part of the islanders anymore, it is a nice to have for a small number of the population. There is new evidence to suggest that pilot whale populations are genetically diverse in the thousands. Therefore it would make the grind a very serious risk to a genetic population. It may well be that the grind will cease once the genetic evidence is finalised as it would certainly be unsustainable at that point. I do not believe you can force a population to give something up, but what you can do is keep pointing out the elephant in the room until such a time as the population sees that it is the right thing to do to stop. As the whales killed are migratory, and not actually from the local populations, it is something we can all have a say on. We share the oceans and the creatures within them as they know no borders.
@virtually6346
@virtually6346 8 лет назад
+Roy Sinar That's where nature comes in. They're using their surroundings and the whales that happened to migrate around their island was just one of the few animals they could use as resource. I'm not saying they should be eating whales for days and weeks on end but instead they are trying to conserve the left over whales for that year. It's true that the whales isn't an essential food source but it helps bring the community together and saves time to hunt for other food sources like those birds which take a fairly long time of the day to hunt yet needed a lot of them in order to feed the family or neighbors. As for the ocean, I do believe that it belongs to everyone and everything in them but how could people deny the fact that they're limited to the animals on that island and the vast ocean? Wouldn't it be fair if they could use the creatures in the ocean that surround their island as part of their food source without being put on blast? I know people have their own opinions but at least their appreciating how nature works. Humans are still animals. We hunt and we kill for food. That's what makes us primitive to a point. Although, I do see what you're trying to convey from the other side but I'm fine with the people of Faroe.
@roysinar8238
@roysinar8238 8 лет назад
+Demvry Lee I have no issue with the Faroese. As far as I can tell they are OK. But if the whales are so toxic that they can only eat small amounts safely then why hunt it. The lady in the video said as much (Faroese lady). They have a massive industrial fishing fleet, fish farming and enough sheep for it to be a fairly regular source of food. They have plenty of supermarkets and even a Burger King, so why waste time killing a lot of whales when you are not able to eat them? So taking away the false idea of it being for food, what other reason would you suggest might justify the scale of killing?
@avionellivi60
@avionellivi60 8 лет назад
+Roy Sinar Bare in mind that eating at Burger King or any typical Industrialized food that is filled up with anti biotics, hormone and feed with items that is not organic is a bigger health risk to them and to the environment. And bare in mind that the burger is not free but costly, very costly at those regions and the pilot whale is local and free. Yes, the pilot whale does contain things that should be avoidable, but everything is about amounts. To much wine will also kill you. You can also die if you only consume cola and even to much water will kill a human being. But that does not stop us from drinking cola, wine or consuming unhalthy burgers. The point is that people, also these islanders, consume a variety of foods and not too much of just one source. False idea of it being food? It is still far more healthy than a large portion of the "food" you consume in your own cuntry! E.g fast food.
@roysinar8238
@roysinar8238 8 лет назад
+avion ellivi I don't believe the medical advice in the Faroe Islands covers not eating Burger King. Can't think why that might be. Any ideas? Also I think you missed the point. Still not to worry. The relative scaremongering about fast food has little to nothing to do with the medical advice on the Faroe Islands regarding whale meat and blubber. Now if they had advice suggesting that fast food was toxic and a likely cause for numerous medical conditions, I would agree with you wholeheartedly, but there isn't so your point is?

Yesterdays brutal killing of *1428 white-side dolphins in the Faroe Islands was an illegal hunt.* The grindforeman of the district was not informed. And had he been, he says he wouldn´t have allowed the slaughter to happen. Instead, another grindforeman made the decision, a decision he was not allowed to make. It is on him that 1428 dolphins were driven for over 40 km. He made the call for them to be slaughtered even though there weren´t enough people or boats to handle all the dolphins. He allowed for a complete chaotic massacre to happen, and he has been reported to the local police for this. A man like that can not have the responsibility to decide the fate of migrating whales and dolphins again. The only right thing to do is to strip him of his authority, and to ban all future hunts on white-sided dolphins. The locals who are using their voices to speak up against this need to be applauded, and lets hope that they will not back down.

This is called the fallacy of relative privation: the idea that there is only one "biggest problem" in the world, that everyone should agree on what that is, and that any time spent on any other problem is time wasted. Not only is this absurd (not everyone agrees on what the biggest problems are), wrong-headed (it suggests that people can only support one cause at a time and that "everyone" working on that problem is somehow infinitely better than "enough" people), but it's actually evil. It's evil because it allows "whataboutism" and allows people to point fingers at people "wasting time" on issues they don't find important, and justifies any but the most prevalent evil. "Sure, there's child labor, slavery, three genocides, but what about THAT genocide?" - this suggets we should ignore the first five examples entirely until we've solved the sixth. It's an ignorant argument and you should stop using it.

Yes, she actually said papaya - a fruit grown in Central America about 4000 miles from the faroe islands. Talking about our environment from a holistic point of view, this is nonsense. It is like these (you?) Sea Shepherd fanatics dont at all consider the impact, that the consumption of imported super market food has on our environment. Slaughtering whales (that is not even endangered) is a much more eco-friendly way to get nutrition. Also, why is it worse killing a whale than killing a sheep? The main argument seems to be that whales are smart, and therefore should not be hunted. What is the reasoning behind, that it is better to kill stupid animals than smart animals? Is is founded in any rationel thoughts, whatsover? If I think whales should be killed over sheeps, because sheeps are more cute and cuddly isn't it just as valid an argument? Finally, I have never mentioned anything about the Faroese Islands not having a high living standard. And of course they don't need to kill whales - But due to my prior arguments I think they should be free to, if they want. And sea shepherd should fck off and stop harassing small countries, when their own countries (expecially USA) are major contributors to the ongoing climate crisis. Get your priorites straight, please... And start by educating youselves. Watching this, Sea Shepherd seems more like a cult void of rational thoughts and scientific arguments than anything else. The Faroe Islanders have every right to hunt whale and you can't invade their land and tell them how to survive. I do however believe if the meat contains that high a level of mercury that maybe they need to change up the format a little. And i do admire the passion the activist have for saving these animals but calling Faroe Islanders primitive and nazis is very insulting , and you're asking for a reaction you won't like. I love watching Sea Shepherd, it was a good show, they saved the whales, helped restore the balance of the whale populations. I think it was a show that started with good intentions, the over fishing of our seas is a real problem and I have to give it to the Sea Shepherds for aiding in the correction of that problem. However everything needs boundaries, everything, including Sea Shepherd. This is one of those times. In all honesty, watching the grind was horrible and like Ellen DeGeneres says: If we all had to kill our own meat, most of us would be vegan. Never the less it is a way of life for people who live a completely different way of life than I do. It is sustainable and nothing is wasted, the animals are not tortured for a lifetime before dying. I cannot honestly sit here and and say in my heart that I feel it's wrong. I would never participate in a grind (I would just faint).. but I also don't condemn it.

@Rob You have no understanding of anything, do you? You can play the semantics game all day long but then you'll lose too. You don't need any more food than what's required to keep you from dying yet I bet you still have a couple pounds extra simply because we're evolved to enjoy eating more than we strictly need to survive. Nobody eats only as much as they need. Nobody! Could, theoretically, the Faroese survive purely of Cod and Mutton? Sure but they'd all suffer from vitamin deficiency. Could they eat something else at great expense to the quality of their lives? Sure, so you could you and I but nobody does that. Even hardcore vegans don't follow that ethos strongly. Whale meat is very important for the quality of life of people in climates like the Faroese islands. Getting mammalian meat that's sourced locally is better for the environment(other species) and gives the Faroese the protein, fat and vitamins that are hard to get otherwise. Its technically possible to live without certain things but its so impractical its cruel to demand such of the only species on Earth with consciousness(us).

They did this because their ego, their ignorance, their boredom, and their small d*ck energy compelled them too. Those dolphins were beached on that bloody shore being slaughtered, being stabbed with screwdrivers by children, being run over, being tortured. Dolphins stay with their families for years. When you kill 1500 dolphins, you aren’t just killing them, you are destroying families, disrupting the eco-system. Dolphins have a history of protecting humans from sharks. According to research. The island is outside of Europe, so it's an island that reaches temperatures under 0 degrees which is freezing which means, that community needs to hunt whales in order to survive and not freeze, because whales provide blubber, and blubber is a fat that stores warmth, so the consumers that are eating whales are staying warm, alive, and that's their culture and food. Blubber is a food source for Eskimos, so they would fall under the eskimo traits of survival needs, so they hunt whales for survival. Around 49,000 civilians live in the Paroah Islands, that's not a lot of people, so that means that's their main food of survival for the Danish people, and the Island is composed of rain, cold, and snow weather all year round. So they eat whales to survive and stay alive so they won't freeze to death. Paroah Island doesn't have any trees, so it doesn't produce foods other countries have, which means that their food supply is at shortage, so they rely on the ocean to eat and for warmth to stay alive. Paroah Island can get as cold as -30 degrees. That's freezing eskimo weather, so the blubber the whales have which is their food, is the reason those people haven't frozen to death and died. And they share their food supply, so they eat the whales and don't hunt for sport and just to kill. They eat their whales to stay warm which is their omega fatty foods to retain heat.
@blueheart7987
@blueheart7987 3 года назад
@Lydia Ponce You are not that thorough with your research, as you clearly have skipped over some very important facts. 100 years ago these islanders ate whale and dolphin meat for survival, however nowadays it is eaten as a luxury. Mainly because there are many many other alternatives, such as 70,000 sheep, salmon farms and a large fishing industry. Not only that, their shops are packed full of food just like any western country supermarket. The meat is highly toxic with methyl mercury and other PCB's so large amounts are eventually dumped or secretely fed to their salmon farms. Lastly there is no such place as the 'Paroah' islands, they are called the Faroe islands.
@blueheart8786
@blueheart8786 3 года назад
My mistake, I realized my research was based on Sea Shepherd articles and we all know they are not trustworthy. After some research I found out that around 20 to 35 % of their annual consumption of meat comes from these non endangered pilot whales. Meaning it is not a luxary food for them, but a vital source of free food for the locals that they highly appreciate. Having these local resources helps the islanders be less dependent on having to import all food from abroad, and that helps the local household economy as imported food on those islands is among the most expensive food in the world. The man made toxins in the ocean and its animals is not a thing caused by these locals, but something the locals for decades have tried to make the rest of the world aware of and get us in the industrialized world to stop killing the oceans and their food with our industrialized pollution in the oceans. Sea Shepherd is well aware of this problem, but since it is the polluters to send Sea Shepherd millions of dollars ever year they do not want to upset the polluters and instead bash some small groupe of nature people, like some big bully, instead of bullying the donors to SS as they are the once polluting and killing more animals than any islanders do. The islanders walk around with full bellies, yet they insist on killing whales and dolphins that they can only partly eat, as it is contaminated with PCB'S and mercury. Much of the whale meat is simply dumped back at sea, especially in the smaller towns. Petitions with hundreds of thousands of signatures are ongoing, and have been made to stop the Grind. How many petition are there to support the Grind? Yes that's right - none. Sea Shepherd are not the only organisation trying to stop the Grind. Outside pressure from Europe and the rest of the world will force the islanders to eventually give up this outdated practice and join the 21st century.

@@dragondad7733 No I understand that Hunters don't always hunt to extinction, and I do understand hunting is good and less cruel way of getting food but your original point of that "it's true conservation" is wrong to save/protect a species you don't kill it you either leave it to it's own devices or protect it eg: armed guards protect gorillas from poachers in rainforests or polluting less to help save coral reefs. That is true conservation. Edit: Also the reasons the whales do go back is because there not the same whales, whales stay in family pods so if the hunters are slaughtering the whole family of whales the species isn't learning "maybe Ilwe shouldn't go near here".
@jamesdaw348
@jamesdaw348 3 года назад
@@JamyWolf You are right. Preservation is not the same as conservation. Preservation basically means "hands off" while conservation is the actual physical management. Hunters help conserve wildlife because it keeps populations from reaching their carrying capacity. Carrying capacity is the maximum number of individuals in a population that the ecosystem can support, usually limited by food. It is important to remember that this whale species is not endangered and although it seems like a lot, the Faroe people are not killing enough whales from the population to hurt the species as a whole. Whale are often characterized as a charismatic species, meaning a species that has symbolic value or widespread popular appeal, so many people have negative opinions for whale hunting. For many whale species, hunting is detrimental to the population, but for this species it is not. However, it is important to remember that whale hunting for the Faroe people is no different than any other form of hunting for the rest of the world. It is how they survive.

Magma M So where did I say Pilot whales are endangered? They are however considered "data deficient" In other words there has been no scientific studies done on Pilot whale populations, and no one has any idea as to how many there are existing. . This however is a poor reason to go ahead and kill Pilot whales given there is no real empirical evidence to back up whale populations. Back in 1966 fish stocks completely collapsed and all the while there were so called "experts" telling everyone that stocks were more or less unlimited, much like we here today about Pilot whales in the North Atlantic. Whale hunting in the Faroes is NOT "sustainable". According to ASCOBANS / Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) convention secretariat staff (same offices). Faroese whale hunts are NOT designated ‘sustainable’ under ASCOBANS due both to lack of accurate pilot whale population data and the ocean areas covered by the treaty in regards to Appendix II species. The grindadrap has not been declared 'sustainable' by the CMS for the same reasons as confirmed again on the 28th January 2016 by the ASCOBANS coordinator & CMS Marine Mammals Officer based in Bonn, Germany.

@magmam5477 8 лет назад
mack man When you said it is not sustainable. That is also what I have read in articles in The Guardian and more.
@125minden
@125minden 8 лет назад
Magma M Reproducton rates are based on a population that can replace itself. However as I said no one knows how many Pilot whales there are in the North Atlantic. So any extrapolated offspring can not be considered as reliable evidence. In addition tissue contamination through pollution, and other man made threats reduces the population even further. What you read in the Guardian is not always true. Our oceans are in trouble and are dying. When our oceans die we die, sadly I doubt you know or even care.

The mercury effect is still detectable during adolescence. The mercury from the maternal diet affects the blood pressure of the children. The contaminants of the blubber adversely affect the immune system so that the children react more poorly to immunizations. Contaminants in pilot whales appear to increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease in those who often eat pilot whale. The risk of hypertension and arteriosclerosis of the carotid arteries is increased in adults who have an increased exposure to mercury. Septuagenarians with type 2 diabetes or impaired fasting glycaemia tended to have higher PCB concentrations and higher past intake of traditional foods, especially during childhood and adolescence. Impaired insulin secretion appears to constitute an important part of the type 2 diabetes pathogenesis associated with exposure to persistent lipophilic food contaminants . Arh, such opposition is just entirely emotional. Could be that it's entirely emotional, but that doesn't make cannibalism or whaling okay. Pilot whales are highly intelligent creatures, they have brains that are twice as big and heavy as the human brain, and contains more neocortical neurons than any other animal on planet earth, including humans. The recognize themselves in the mirror, they have culture, they have highly complex language, they even have names for each other. You can't compare cetaceans to other species, such as seal, pig, cow or chicken. Cetaceans are in a completely different league all together, they are regarded by virtually all scientists that have anything to say about the subject, as the second most intelligent animals on planet earth, second only to humans and ahead of all the other great apes and elephants. Seals, pigs, cows, dogs and other animals of similar levels of intelligence, are on a bicycle, cetaceans are on a jet plane and humans are in spacecraft. The hunt for grind is not humane. The animals are terrified as they are hunted around for hours and made to flee towards the ambush near shore, where they will quickly be surrounded and slaughtered by the thousands in front of each other. Some of the animals are left squiggling, squirming and suffering on the beach as they bleed out. You wouldn't offer a pig that sort treatment, you wouldn't even do that to an animal in the woods. It resembles the parforce hunting of the past, that was popular amongst royals across europe back in the medievals.

Most people would agree that the sea shepherds are fighting for a good cause, but they should rather be focusing on pollution and excessive industrial waste instead. It would have much more impact globally and it would not inspire conflict. Worst part is; they know this. What they said at (6:00) is absurd and it could lead people to believe that they just want to take the easy route instead of actually solving the problem. Their rhetorical techniques are all over the place, they have no sense of debate and will say weird things.14:19 Comparing the grind to the killing of people was dumb and will lead to nothing but conflict. If they really wanted to stop the grind they could have solely played on the health factor which would almost certainly have granted new laws regarding the practice. If you consume it to often your body will protest. Even if you drink the healthiest clean water you can find in to big doses you will also die. ottatiotta Trying to claim that Whale and dolphin is not toxic - is absurd. Of course there are toxic impurities in all foods, but not in the large quantities that are in the meat of cetaceans. Faroe islanders have the highest blood levels of mercury in the world, and this is reflected in numerous health problems. Chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that Pilot whales *no longer be considered fit for human consumption*, because they are toxic - as revealed by research on the Faroes themselves. Chief medical officers Pál Weihe and Høgni Debes Joensen announced that pilot whale meat and blubber contains too much mercury, PCBs and DDT derivatives to be safe for human consumption. The Faroe islanders have the highest levels of mercury in their blood in the world. Jonas Waclaw 1.Unused Whale meat is dumped back at sea - There are many times when the Grind kills more whales than can be processed, especially in the smaller villages where the meat can not be processed in time before the meat goes off. For example :Víðvík 11th of November 2010: 62 pilot whales are driven into the remote bay far too late in the day while darkness is already falling. It is decided to kill the animals and come back the next day in order to flense them. By then, the meat and blubber of many of the carcasses has started to rot and the bulk of the meat is being discarded into the ocean. Another example: Klaksvík, 19th of July 2010: In the biggest drive hunt of the last six years 228 pilot whales are driven onto shore, despite the beach only having the capacity to hold up to 100 animals. The killing takes place at dusk with night falling quickly and the chaos leads to a massacre. Even a lot of the local people are horrified by the scenes of slaughter. Only four men with the skills to kill the whales quickly and in the right way are present and they are completely overwhelmed by the chaos and the huge number of animals. A lot of young men and women just jump into the chaos, wielding knifes and stabbing at the animals without a clue what they are doing. A lot of the whales slowly bleed to death or die of their wounds. These are just two examples there are many more. 2. The Grind is undoubtedly cruel. In modern abattoirs, animals to be slaughtered usually don't even know what awaits them, and death is over in one second. Now compare this to the Grind where a pod of whales is rounded up for up to 10 nautical miles with boats up to half an hour, all the while they are distressed. They are then grounded on to a beach and a blunt hook is thrust into their blow hole and pulled further in. All this happens while they produce "shrills" or "plaintive cries". These noises are not joys of laughter! Finally they are sliced open. This process could take up to five minutes, and hardly what you would call a humane way of killing by any decent standard. If this nonsense happened in most first world countries the abattoir would be closed down and criminal charges would proceed. The other sickening point about the Grind is the ‘sport’ side of the grindadrap, when a grind is called there is a buzz of excitement, lots of people rushing to the killing bay, there is cheering and laughter and lots of hand shaking and congratulations. There is no denying that this is a sport with a festival like atmosphere for particularly the younger Faroese men often seen smiling and posing for photographs while drenched in the blood of the whales they have killed. Killing an animal for FUN is much like Bull fighting in Spain or Cock Fighting in some Asian countries. 3. No one really knows how many Pilot whales there are in the Atlantic, and the numbers are really a guess. This however is a poor reason to go ahead and kill Pilot whales given there is no real empirical evidence to back up whale populations. Diminishment of bio-diversity is one of the major factors contributing to killing our Ocean. However I doubt you know or even care that our oceans on this planet are in trouble. Back in 1966 fish stocks completely collapsed and all the while there were so called "experts" telling everyone that stocks were more or less unlimited, much like we here today about Pilot whales in the North Atlantic. The most appalling point about the Grind is that endangered species are hunted, for example: On the 10th August local Faroese media has reported that 2 Beaked (Bottlenose) whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus), who stranded themselves on the beach Sandvík on the south island of Suðuroy in the Faroe Islands, have been slaughtered. The Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) lists the Beaked whale as threatened with extinction (see Appendix I). 4. Lastly doctors have advised not to eat too much whale meat yet Faroe islanders still eat it. If your local medical professional advises you not to eat contaminated whale meat then most sensible people would exclude it from their diet. However if you are stupid enough to eat contaminated whale meat I have no sympathy if you become sick. I say to the islanders keep shoveling whale meat down their gobs. It can be seen as retribution from the whales.

+mack man even after all that lengthy and irrelevant commentary, you still have no right to tell people what to do just because you don't like it. what these people do is not against faroe law. it's not against int'l law. it's not even against some bullshit god's law. you and your ilk just don't like it. again, you have no right to modify the behavior of people just because you feel self righteous and don't like it. deal with it.
