I am so glad I'm not the only one who finds the cheeky humor funny... he is a super entertaining guy! Perfect for telling these stories, or even just presenting historical topics in general. I've become quite a Tony fan.
@@thescarletgraywitch8052 I totally agree with you. Growing up watching British comedy shows on TV such as Monty Pythons Flying Circus, Faulty Towers, etc. I've always been a huge fan of the "British style of comedy". The fact that Tony manages to actually teach me things about history I never knew and give me a good chuckle in the process is why I love this channel so much. Take care.
Love this guy. Brilliant in Blackadder and brilliant with all of his documentaries. He deserves all the accolades and success that he has achieved. Looking forward to even more documentaries from you, Tony.
Romans in 220: Builds 100 meters of road in one hour that lasts two thousand years Britain in 2020: fixes 100 meters of road in one year that lasts for two months
Same Bullshit here in the United States. They built the coast to coast railroad in record time and construction projects they take forever they have to milk every penny out of it
@@WhatsCookingTime The transcontintal railroad was actually built extremely substandard and after the golden spike, crews had to work to actually get the railroad where it was functional. The reason being was the railroads were after a land grab.
Idk how many roads were being built in the US in 220, probably none. But the roads here in the US in 2021 are just as shitty and don't last. Good God the winter storm in Texas this past February tore up the roads. Many of them were not drivable! Husband cut 2 tires at the same time getting around one section!
HAHA I was just having a similar conversation with my mom about houses and renovating. The people responsible for the houses where she lives, renovate or fix things always with the worst material, and in the dumbest ways, with the most toxic and usually unnecessary chemicals (like flooring etc). It lasts not that long, it's an absolute hassle to even get it sorted for them to eventually come, maybe, and completely inconvenience the tennent, etc, taking ages. Meanwhile, things used to be made/built with natural materials, not toxic crap that is harmful to health (generally, I'm assuming), and it lasts so long, that people are still excavating it from dig sites from post-Roman or medieval etc times and so on. 😒🤷♀️😂
Honestly wish Tony could do this same sort of presentation for the America’s too. He’s a true showmen, and he just places such a massive sense of importance when it comes to understanding history. I could totally picture him reporting on places like Charleston, Boston, NYC, places that were built by our British cousins.
I think Tony is like the American Dick Clark but from Great Britain. He has to be one thee best tv documentary host’s of all time! I could watch his program’s all day! He’s looking a little bit frail here and his speech is a bit slower. I hope everything is ok and he’ll be around for a long long time! Love your programs and keep up the great work! Thank you!
Right the first thing I do when I see an Absolute History video is check to see if Tony is the host before I watch it ! No offense to the other people hes just the main reason I watch the channel
@@JackPitmanNica hahaha! I do the same thing! I just think it’s a bit more interesting when Tony hosts the program. And like you said, no disrespect to any other hosts either.
I'm an American myself from Boston and I've enjoyed Tony's work for 20 years. He's just my favorite presenter he has the right level of snark and information.. Tony is getting a bit older I mean time team I think originally started back in the early nineties so. Not sure how old Tony is these days but he still seems to be getting around okay
I love the Absolute History channel's content, and Tony Robinson's shows are very entertaining. But why can't the people who work for Absolute History come up with more accurate titles and thumbnail graphics? This video covers a lot more than the lives of Gladiators in Roman Britain, but like so many of the titles on this channel, someone picked out one detail and used it to title the whole video. It's counter-productive. Even worse, the thumbnail graphic reads "Anglo-Saxon Gladiators." That immediately prompted a double-take, as the Anglo-Saxons moved into Britain AFTER the Romans left, so I was really curious as to what obscure archaeological evidence might show some present in Britain as gladiators during the Roman occupation. But no--that's just a historically ignorant graphic from a channel that purports to be about history ...
These documentaries would have had proper titles when they originally aired, I don't know why they don't keep the same titles!! and yes the thumbnails are often confusing!! But at the same time I'm just so glad all of this is here for us to watch ^_^ Wait why is it called a "thumbnail"? I just realized that's actually kind of a weird word for a little picture, haha. They're more akin to a book cover than a thumb nail :D
This just inst the same without hearing "Oh Ah, would ya look at that " "Arr Tony" "Stone the Crows" all from a Man in a pair of Hot Pants and a ratty ol tat Hat known as Phil Harding . Man i miss Time Team .. Cheers
@@eileenhildreth8355 I know.. but it isnt the same unfortunately .. it may be alright though but im leery .. Its one of those things that usually go awry .. Taking something was was Amazing at the time, had a Really long run.. but most times when thats tried it fails. I hope they do well but i wont hold my breath . I would consider myself a big fan too of TT .. I even bought the books, the Episode guides and saving up to buy some of Guy's books and the new one hes got coming in the near future . Who knows.. IT might be something New, different in a way and might be better ? "Time" will tell :)
“Today we associate slavery with African people taken by force to work in the Americas.” Do British people buy this? This is from the British National Archives: “It is estimated that Britain transported 3.1 million Africans (of whom 2.7 million arrived) to the British colonies in the Caribbean, North and South America and to other countries.” Also: do the math. That means 400,000 people died in transport.
Probably Victorian historical revision. They probably tried to hide that slavery wasn't abolished in England until the early 1800s. Just checked. 1834.
Language comprehension must be hard. "Modern" european/american slavery wasn't the only form of slavery to exist. That was the point. What is there to buy? and it IS true that when most people think of slavery, they assume the american plantation slave type.
… to bring back something so I can make money. Love all the old regulars but, as we all know it’s nothing without you & Phil. The spark you brought it is gone … whipping a dead horse. Your the man who made the show he’s a poor substitute. Just an opinion…
Your the best Tony! The teasers for Time Team’s resurrection are typical boring stuff. Tim, (just my opinion, we all have one) is an egotistical bore. Just another “pay me” to
Erm ... Who is Tim? The host name is TONY. I find him far more interesting then most hosts. I imagine if you think this documentary is a bore; then just move on and find something less boring. Maybe you can find a recording of someone reading the old reading primaries (See Jane; see
And his father was Punic, that is to say, Phoenician. There was nothing sub-Saharan African about him. If Idris Elba played him it would be totally historically inaccurate.
@@user-yz4xo7ih6m couldn't care a less about 78 years ago...and I'm an American! We're not talking about a WW, and killing. Truth be told, I'm not even a soccer fan, just a huge fan of my heritage!
At 23:50 to 24:00, aren't these girls in an italian mural in a gymnasium, or physical therapy? Their bellies look like they had been pregnant, with a scar at the belly button, could it be the cesarean section?
If you think about it even today a Michellin or 5 star chef who owns several restaurants and is brilliant with food will still, in true slave fashion, in general, answer to a snap of the fingers of a billionaire patron regardless of his own skill. What has changed?
I could care less about the humans involved. What is sickening is the abuse and soulless killing of animals along the way. I hope they are still burning in the ether
Those gladiator are significantly more horrifying than I thought they ever could be. Am I the only one who kinda wants a demonstration somehow because it’s just so mind blowing that it doesn’t seem possible?
