More than any other musical creation, this best captures a united America responding to an existential global threat. Picking itself up bloodied from the defeat of Pearl Harbor, it encapsulates an America rolling off the couch to outproduce, outlast, and outfight our enemies and aid it's friends. It starts off slow, but resolute, occasionally stumbling, but always forward and forthright to powerfully prevail in the end. No other music comes close.
Great modern day anthem from Victory At Sea. For the 10 thumbs down, perhaps they should read a book about Guadalcanal. It was one of the longest, bloodiest battles of WW 2.
As a child I remember reading "Guadalcanal Diary" by Richard Tregaskis. Forty years later as a teacher I got really angry when the librarian was going to throw the book away. I now have it. My did was a sailor on a troop transport that landed marines on the island. He said that in his participation of seven different landings he participated in, the Canal was the worst. Sad to say nobody studies history any more; they just make it up!
It would be nice to honour those who fought for freedom by learning their story. A thumbs down shows lack of knowledge at the least. I would be interested if those who clicked thumbs down know where or what I Guadalcanal. And no it is not the Canal through Guatemala north of the Panama Canal.
I believe all 26 pieces from the tv show are considered one symphony and is in the Guiness book of record as being the longest symphony. I have all the vinyl and Cds. Somewhere I have the movie on VHS. Even on Spotify I have a playlist dedicated. I didn't look but was the name of the series was called " Victory at Sea ". All 26 episodes are on youtube. Does any one remember Navy Log? Well, I guess by now you figured out I enlisted in the Navy. Best time of my life. Especially since my draft number was 4.
I have no religious affiliation but I must state, quite clearly, that the Moron Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra are excellent. Definitely two thumbs up!!
Rob Tro You may want to edit that, because it appears that you put the "Moron Tabernacle Choir" instead of "Mormon". and of course you didn't mean it, I mean who doesn't enjoy MoTab?
Any young people who do not grasp the significance of this piece, search for Guadalcanal to understand what your fathers and grandfathers endured during World War II. Admiration to them from across the Big Pond.
Interesting videos from all the theaters of WWII...but the MUSIC MUST have been the Big Budget item for the producers. GREAT music! ALL of the music..from ALL of the shows.
A lovely performance. I was perplexed why virtually every musician photographed appeared to be white European until realizing this was in Utah, and I went on my merry way.
How anyone in their right mind can give this orchestra and the tune it is playing a thumbs down beats the stuff out of me. Think of what the tune represents and that horrible period period in world history. There are strange ones among us.
this arrangement is actually terrible imo, it does not do the original piece justice at all. it's not at all the same song. it's been turned from a grand march into a light dance
