The Garifuna are the original inhabitants of the Caribbean sea. In Guatemala alone, there are around 12,000 of them, all of which who live in the coastal town of Livingston. In this video, one of the village leaders named Philip Flores shows me around his Garifuna settlement and shares stories of a side of Guatemala that many often forget exists.

I am Garifuna. I was born and raised in New York but my family is from Roatan. In 2011 I moved to Roatan and was led to the journey of self discovery. I love when Philip said “I’m a rebel.” It is in our DNA to be rebellious because it is the only way we we were able to fight against the superpower of the world at the time. I’m the Director of the Garifuna Cultural Center in Roatan, my mission in life is to educate and empower my people. After watching this video, my team and I are going to look for Philip when we plan our Guatemala trip. Love my Garinagu people!

The Garifuna's are great. I travelled there in the late 80s and their town was small (very few outsiders) but very clean and music came from every home. I met a G Rastian the moment I got off the boat (was a 2 hour trip in those days) and he took me into his home for a week. Never ever asked for anything but shared everything he had with me. We travelled around the coast by foot for a couple of days, living off the land there was food all the way and swimming holes and waterfalls everywhere. One of my favourite places in all the world! Thanks for the tour, great memories.

Mayans have lived in Mesoamerica for 10 thousand years. The Garifuna first came to Roatan (part of the Kingdom Of Guatemala back then) in the 1700s. The Spaniards came to Mesoamerica in the 1500s. The Kekchí and Itzá Maya that still live in the Yucatan, Peten, Coban and Izabal are the locals and everyone else is very much a New Comer or visitor.

I am a Jamaican living in Canada. Growing up in Jamaica, I was told that the Island was inhabited by the Arawak Indians afterwitch, the colonizers braught Africans to the island to work as slaves. We were told the Indians weren't able to work as the Africans do so they went extinct: an argument that doesn't quiet make sense. I believe the Arawak Indians mixed with the African slaves make up the Island of Jamaica. This leader looks like he could be my Jamaican family member.

All native people or indigenous people of the western hemisphere( AKA) indians spoke different dialect of language, synonymous to Hebrew. This is also documented in " Amazing Facts about black indians " by Kanton. During the time 1492 Columbus had Luis de Torres , accompanied him on his voyage manly because Torres, a marrano jew, spoke many languages including Hebrew. Columbus understood there were people on this side of the globe, the so-called new world. Historians will tell you that these people were black in ethnicity and was conquer by many European nation including black moors whom also accompanied ponce de Leon. This is documented in the Codex Azcatitlan. Most of the original people in this region is slowly being genocide or hidden as this well knowledge man has said.

This elder could be talking about Abu bakari's trip to the Americas. He was Mansa Musa's brother. He took 2000 or 3000 ships (it depended on which source you read) and thousands of men and they sailed West to the Americas. He was here before columbus. They sailed from Mali and they never returned. Christopher Columbus reported that he saw Africans in his journals. You can read those yourselves. Other explorers said that they saw Africans when they reached the Americas also. They were in Panama and several other places, but the most were seen in Brazil. It is possible that he could be one of their descendants. I know that this sounds farfetched to those of you who haven't heard of any of this. If you are interested Google Mansa Musa. He was the richest man to ever live. He became ruler of the Mali empire after his brother Mansa Abu bakari went on his expedition.

What you fail to realize is that blacks are found native everywhere. Just because someone is black does not mean they are of African descent. Even white people come from more than one place. All my black ancestors are in America. If I was of African descent, relatives would show up in Africa, but they don't. This man clearly said his people did not come from Africa.

From those tests, I have ancestry all over the world except for Aboriginal Australia, Black Africa and India. But propagandist and brainwashed people can’t accept this fact. As a Guatemalan from Mayan descent myself, I lived in Guatemala for 5 years before coming back to the States and listening to what the corrupt Guatemalan government elitists have done to the Garífuna is devastating, I knew we have our own dialects and differing cultures within the nation, but I never knew we also had Garífuna black brothers and sistas. For the education I received over there, I was never fully taught about the Garífunas, nor did educators fully acknowledged them. Thank you for bringing this to light, I am so happy to know that we are filled with beautiful culture and types of people and thatI have fellow Black brothers and sisters who live and were raised in the same country I was. The existence of the garifuna and the different etnias would be something you would learn in elementary school, although not in much depth, I must agree, but most people are aware if they had the chance to attend elementary school. It's corruption in general that has lead to the deterioration of education in the country, with the declaration of peace in 1996 there was an educational reform that aimed to preserve the native languages by making the educational plan bilingual, in order to promote intercultural exchange, however in the capital, i.e. private schools which end up making the trend of what education ends up like even in public schools (which are in most cases, underfunded and full of corruption in every level, not just the top.), and took it as a globalising task, meaning most people learn, english, german or french as a second language. There is also the aggravating fact that there are no widespread studies or formal instructional books on even the most widely used languages, like kaqchiquel or k'iche. Much less textbooks in those languages.
