Robert Baker have the limited-run satin Standard without the maple top and yea, the CE feels mighty fine. Personally I didn’t get along with the 85/15 set and went to 59/09 via a detour of \m/ pickups. The bridge is PRS but it’s the one from the import line. I changed mine for the MannMade NOS2000 which is the original first generation. The sound difference is not just imaginary and it comes with the thicker size bar.
Cool I think that with only 2 control knobs it creates less resistance to the coils. Which means it will pretty much handle any type of volume from amp effortlessly.
@@nalukeko yes, he said the ( pickups ) were as one. Not sure exactly on the wiring though am thinking it has a better ground due to less or more direct wiring. To test my theory. You can check or compare ohms to another guitar at the cord input jack from guitar.
PRS uses a resistor on the push/pull pot to bleed in a small amount of the coil that would otherwise be fully grounded out. This allows it to retain some fullness and much of the hum-cancelling when otherwise split! Cheers!
ahhh.....that explains why I was disappointed because I wanted it to be also to have strat-esque tone. I kinda think it makes it less flexible because I often want that single coil bite.
That thing sounds incredible. 85/15's are crazy. And like you said, it kind of slots into its own area, which is cool. Not just another strat or gibson or whatever. PRS tone is pretty unique and they really do their own thing well. Plus they feel absolutely flawless in the hand. Hard to argue!
The PRS “pattern thin” neck is the best I’ve ever played. That is the neck shape they’ve put on the CEs. I have a custom 22 and it’s my favourite guitar. It’s beautiful, sounds amazing and is super comfortable to play.
I thought I liked the thin neck because I don’t have big hands. Turns out the regular neck is better for my playing. I don’t get it but it works for me.
Hi Robert. I just received my first P.R.S. Today. Bought a 2016 CE 24 off of Reverb. I now see what all the fuss is about. It is a damn fine instrument!!! Ive only been playing on it for a couple of hours, but I can see it is like a swiss army knife with all of the combinations of tones that is coming out of my Fender Super Reverb. As an owner of 7 American Strats, and a couple Gibson SG and Les pauls, I would describe it as the love child of a Strat and an SG. But it is unique in its own right. It is gourgous and really fun and easy to play. I dont always name my axes either, but she is Scarlet! Right off the bat... lol... Rock on brother!
No lie my jaw dropped when you started jamming the single coil at 8:16. Wow! One of these popped up on Facebook marketplace in my town this week and I’m seriously eyeing it. Great video mate. 🤘🏻
I bought my two PRS custom 24's new in 2012, and they are amazing. I've been playing Ibanez guitars since 1991, Fenders since 94, and Gibson's since 97, but since having the PRS'S, they are my main live guitar's! I have a bad back, and one of my Les Pauls is heavy, and the other one is no light weight, so I tend to favour lighter guitars like the PRS, or my SG. M
I LOVED the CE but ultimately decided on the FR Custom 24. That guitar is my "number one" because of the sheer thrill-factor alone. PRS don't make guitars; they make works of art.
Always going to be someone that doesn't agree with you, but like you said, "If it makes you reach for it, then its worth having." Love the demo. Keep up the good work you do.
Amen. I left Fender, Gibson, and Ibanez long ago. You get all the chime of a 25.5 in scale and the warmth of 24.5 or 24.75 in scale. The beautiful tones are automatic, even with my SS practice amp. I really love the single coil sound, its warm and chimey. I have an SE Standard 24, SE Custom 24 and a CE 24. I love them all.
i know what you mean. I just bought a McCarty 594, and I can't put it down. I have a whole rack of Gibson Les Paul guitars, but the 594 has quickly become my go to guitar hands down. People told me the 594 was a "better Les Paul", and I didn't believe them. Now I do.
Just picked this guitar up today, tobacco burst with the natural back/sides and natural binding. What an absolutely gorgeous looking instrument. Wonderful tones and playability.
Beautiful looking guitar..... I have a ‘17 CE and it the best guitar I have ever played.... The neck is perfect..... I’m not quite sure what magic sits behind the PRS design process but it is incredibly well done....
I recently bought the CE 24 semi-hollow and I love the guitar, but hated the 8515 pickups. I replaced them with Duncan JB/Jazz set that I already had from another guitar and they did the trick. It is really a great guitar.
@@beatsbyjamie ibanez 6001 series with infinity pickups love the dayum almost changed the pickup like a fool because I thought I didn't like the sound after a year a two but adjusting the pickup height makes all the difference thanks for asking buddy
Great video. There is a "string ground" wire run from the control's cavity into the side of the hole for the "bottom" tailpiece body bushing. It connects by being squeezed against the side of the hole by the metal bushing, not usually soldered. The factory wire doesn't necessarily survive changing the bushing since it's small diameter and bent at a hard 90 degree angle, lying alongside the installed bushing. I would recommend installing a new wire for that ground before installing/reinstalling a new bushing in that position. Then make sure you have a good connection before going to the next step.
I have 3 L.P.'s then bought my first PRS Hollowbody2 25th Anniversary, wow factor plus, after that I bought a P22 with Piezo and tremolo, totally fell in love, I mainly play the P22, as the versatility is amazing.
I had one of the first CE's made. It was red with a black laminate on the headstock, the original style neck heel, which didn't stick out as much as yours and PRS lever lock tuners. I'm pretty sure it was made in the original shop in Annapolis MD. It was a SWEET guitar. I haven't played any PRS guitars in the last ten years, but mine was simply the best solid body guitar I ever owned. In those days all PRS guitars had 24 fret necks, so there wasn't a 'CE 24.'
My good buddy had one from their original run in the 90s... she's a killer. It is a great guitar! Regarding their "coil-split," they have a mini circuit board inside that "doubles" the winding. In a traditional split, the humbucker is cut so you get one of coils turned off and typically sounds anemic. But with the mini circuit from prs, it routes the signal to somewhat "stack" the turns of one side with the other. Its way cool...
PRS makes quality stuff, man. I got a PRS SE Custom 24 for Christmas last year, and I can honestly say that it's pretty much everything I could want in an electric guitar.
I would have questioned you as a guitar player if you didn’t love a PRS. I held one and instantly, my mind started scheming on the financial plan to get one.
I knew you'd love it that much hehe! And trust me, it keeps on giving ;) That wide thin neck feels just right.. the violin carve stays sexy year after year, and it will stay straight as an arrow! You can feel the love put into the making of a PRS when you play it for a little bit. I still have the most stupid grin on my face every time my ce22 catches the corner of my eye! 🙌🤘 Congrats on your new found love! Happy for you!
Prs uses a technique called partial coil split. A resistor is added in line of one of the coils hot lead going to ground. It only drops a specific among not of the one coils output to ground. Depending on the value of the resistor warrants different voicings. But the great thing it still remains humcanceling. The DTG model is the only guitar that had splittable humbuckers that actually sounded like singlecoils. Have yet to find another guitar do a convincing coil split like that guitar does
The EXACT feeling I have for my S2 Standard 22 (satin black diamond finish) w/ #7 pups. After owning and selling two SEs and realizing I could probably never afford a Core model, I was done with PRS until I picked up the S2 in a shop for the heck of it and took it for a test drive. Unbelievable value, playability and tone. Now that I've had it for a few months, I can say it's quite possibly my favorite of all I've owned. And, YES - you are right - the split coils sound FAR better than any other split I've tried.
mpactdesignmedia I had a satin s2 that my buddy now owns. He’s a great guitarist with 3k-12k guitars and he plays the prs over them. It’s ugly but man does it play
Recently I found a 1997 PRS CE Standard 22 with a beautiful black finish and I loved it 😍 it played so well and the tone was amazing. Currently I play my SE Cu24 most of the time and I can definitely say that this brand is awesome 🫶
Thx Robert!!...I own a PRS, P24. Purchased it last year. I also own a Strat and a Les Paul. My PRS is my go-to guitar. Even at $4k-$5k, it’s worth every cent!!!!
McCarty 594 Ten Top owner here and she's the prize jewel in my collection. Worth every penny. Mine is the faded whale blue like the one you were talking about.
This is one fantastic guitar !! I have a few PRS's and the CE might just be my favorite :)The playability is straight up typical PRS but the tone is mesmerizingly good. Yup the neck of a guitar has to do a lot with it's sound as I have found out. So the bolt on neck speaks more to me than the other models from the company :)
Got 7 PRS's now, not a bit surprised you like it so much. Got a Sunburst 22 ( nitro finish, 57/08 PU's ), Custom 22, Custom 22 special, (2) 513's, Mira X, and a korean custom 22. Then I had to stop. After I picked up my first one in the store I knew it was for me. Felt like it was custom built for me.
robert, you should try an EVH Wolfgang standard. I have one and it sounds great, but the neck pickup. My god. It's just so thick and perfect sounding. with a good amount distortion I get a tone that's very close to woman tone, but without touching the tone knob. It's thick, bassy, but somehow all the treble is still there. It just sounds great clean or dirty.
I have a CE24 Robert, in Cherry Burst and even though I have other (some more expensive) choices, I always go to the PRS for the important gigs, or recording sessions. So versatile. And those pickups, full or split are incredible!
Fun fact about this guitar model, Alex Lifeson from Rush used it during their late 2000's tours. In particular "Snakes And Arrows" and "Clockwork Angels".
Great review. I think some people look at the CE24 as a lower priced alternative to the Custom line -- which it is, in one sense. But it really has its own thing going on. The maple neck, the more subtle carve on the top, the McCarty-styled switching system all give the CE24 its own feel. And since it's not one of their "core" guitars, the tops don't get graded... but I've seen some gorgeous tops on some CE24s that would give some the 10-top guitars a real run for their money. At a lower price point compared to their core guitars, I think they give you a lot of bang for your buck.
Yeah I bought a used PRS Standard made in Indonesia, and I got to say even through it was made by another company PRS really made sure that there was good quality control even in there cheapest line of guitars, I was really amazed of just how good of quality it is !!!👍😁
I’ve got a Jade PRS Custom 24, a Rosewood neck PRS Custom 24 in satin black gold and a PRS McCarty. Best guitars I’ve ever had the honor of playing, recently decided I’m going to only collect PRS models. Once I sell my Chapman, the CE24 is on the list
If I remember correctly, the coil split isn't 100%. Some output from the other coil is allowed to bleed through so the tonal transition between single and humbucker is smoother and more balanced. Love mine too.
Have owned or do currently own a S2, a DGT, a P22, and a 200x CE-22, and the CE-22 is my absolutely favourite, especially with a low output humbucker in the bridge!
Best review by far of this guitar. Your reviews are better because you are giving genuine honest opinions.... not just trying to sell us like everyone else that tells us something is good just to get free gear. I can tell you really love this guitar. I bought same one but in satin cherry burst. I agree that this is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. I also have Gibson Les Paul with bb pro pickups, American standard strat, PRS SE 245... and I gravitate way more to this guitar... just has unique snappy attack and smoothness to sound. The cleans don't sound as good as my strat...but iprefer the CE split to my strat in overdrive. I actually prefer this to my gibson slightly. The Gibson is brighter in low E, A, and D strings... and has good low end growl... but the PRS has warm bite and a tone that is uniquely awesome... can't explain. I almost want to sell my gibson because sounds is so similar but prs has more tonal variety. Both great... similar sounding guitars in humbucking mode. Prs ce much better playability and tonation. Again they both sound great. I also played the prs core 24 and it didn't have the cool snappy attack that this guitar has... though it looked very impressive. I still need to spend more time with the core to get better taste... but this CE is a screaming beast... not sure any guitar could sounds better... just different tone. Thanks again for great review!
I first owned a B.C. Rich Bich back in '82 when they first came out and were well made. Skipping oh, 30 some yrs,(life trials and tribulations) , bought a Strat and soon after a PRS 594 10 TOP. Seems there's A LOT OF PLAYERS really digging on these PRS guitars !!! Gibson, Fender, etc better step up. Been living off their label for awhile.
Prs lefty custom 24 is going to be my second guitar. Been doing some overtime the past month to save for it and I hope to have it but next month. Man I want that prs guitar so bad.
The pickup selector on the older CE guitars had a rotary 5 way switch in them. I liked it like that but the majority of people didnt care for it. So they stopped making them. I'd give my pinky toe to have it back. The one that got away....
Prs does great coil splits. They feel like tele single coils more so than strats, but thats awesome. My McCarty can sound like a full fat les paul type sound, or a big warm tele. It's awesome.
I wish they had that color Red when I got my 30th ANNiv. PRS from their core lineup. It is harder to see the color unless your onstage with a light hitting it.
I find many guitars fun for a while but have found over time after the "newness" wears off I rarely pickup my guitars with less than an 12" radius. I wish PRS would offer more than the 10" on more models.
The 10” radius is a critical component to a PRS guitar. If you don’t get along w it, PRS prob isn’t for you. That’s like asking for an LP w something other than a 12” radius. Although it would be cool if, like Gibson, PRS offered a compound radius on some models.
More people that are just learning would be more atached or drawn to learning that slow but powerful sound like pink floyd that you just gave us an amazing example of. Like i said, you are really good at fast playing, but for so many of us learn at that slower pace while trying to effect our listeners at an advanced style even if we can't play that well (As You) of coarse
Just picked up one of these and lived it so much, picked up a second! Sounds better than some guitars I have costing 3-4x the price, including some high-end PRS's.... Such a versatile guitar and sounds killer live. Plenty of cut on the neck pickup too and split coil sounds are KILLER... The bolt-on neck gives it its snap
