Comedian Tim Murray joins to share the downsides of going to college for musical theater with Gianmarco, why they weren’t better friends, and they discuss the famous “gun exercise”, an acting experiment that should never have been allowed and which legend holds led to one actress putting a condom on a gun with her mouth.

More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

Yes, keep talking about theater 👏🏽 There is a certain no nonsense mood that Russel, understandably, seems to be in while sick. It has added a pinch of negativity (a vibe Russel doesn't necessarily normally have) for these past two episodes, amplifying the humour and made the episodes even funnier 😆 Great episode once again.

Thank you Gianmarco for calling out the predatory uni practices in the US. It is a service and young adults always feel obligated to take shit like they’re still in high school. If you’re getting a BA at all, the degree is a worthless piece of paper. You aren’t learning how to engineer. You aren’t learning how to do surgery. You aren’t learning how to code security. Network, get a foot in the door, and fucking leave. The *second* you have a real job in your field and some references in the field, fucking *leave*. It is not worth American prices to learn how to do art. College is only for getting your foot in the door and networking if you’re doing theater, dance, music, photography, fine arts, graphic design, all that shit is not worth the four years especially if you’re already good and don’t learn anything anymore.

By and large this is understandable but those are NOT the only BAs lol. There's quite a few that you would need to teach (like lit & writing/English) or do other jobs (i.e. the BA in Psychology)

no joke, theater kids undergo various forms of physiological torture in hopes of learning the craft. what you said at 30:49 was probably the tip of the iceberg

Thanks for this interesting take on theater school. I’ve been considering whether I would go to a school for the arts or just a regular university and because of this podcast I think I’m gonna go to a university and just minor in theater. Thank you so much for sharing your lived experience.

17:55 - i back my negative couch comment. The small couch was a great idea because it gives youtube commenters something to joke about each week

As someone who was in everything else except theater, and played in the pit for theater productions, please talk more about theater. Sitting on the sidelines listening to theater people talk and gossip is so nostalgic to me lmao

Maybe comedians could ask at the end of their shows “Hey guys, is there any crowd work segments you provided that I should not post online?” Idk how practical that is but that is a concern when I’m asked stuff at a comedy show

Your rant about the acting schools was almost verbatim my rant about med schools. Did you know you have to match into residency programs? And if they decide you're not "good enough" to match to a residency program, you have to try again next year??? What is the point of med school if there aren't enough residency spots for everyone? I didn't go to med school, but I have relatives who went and I was livid when they told me. It's all a scam.

Small couch is cool. Kinda like the "Are You Garbage" table. No need to cut between every single person.
