That's such a bit of me, in the 70s there was a retired gentleman farmer round the corner from my dad's works in Brabourne in Kent, Mr Scamp was his name. I used to go round for breakfast on Saturday mornings and standing in the corner was this lovely side by side with his golden lab curled up next to it. I used to eye it up whilst eating the best bacon sandwiches his wife made me. He let me look at it once, it was a boxlock, nothing fancy but it was well looked after and had this really nice colouring that I thought was pretty damn cool as a boy of about 8. Every time I see a gun like this it gives me goosebumps. Thanks for sharing it!

What a timepiece? Thank you for showing this. One of my regrets was not buying a new English gun at that time. They were expensive then. We all had used Birmingham made boxlock non-ejectors, then. They all worked well then as they would now.

I have a arriata sable 25 inch barrels side lock ejector with church hill rib was shooting pigeon today over cut peas most shots were 50 plus yards !!! Amazing balance and fast !! As nice in its own way as my William Powell sovereign 👍 great vid 👍

J.C. I'd buy this gun in a heartbeat if I had any prospect of getting it home. What I have learned over the years is that coming through customs in Austin (Texas) is that any conversation that begins with "Officer, I can explain" never ends well

I have a lovely Birmingham made 25 inch boxlock ejector with superb engraving, spot on for grouse and partridge and also it will take down high birds. I don't need 30 or 32 inch barrels and I am eighty years old !

25 inch barrels with Churchill rib? Open chokes? Superb for olimpic skeet! That is what I shoot with an almost idéntical gun. Try It! It is a real and encouraging challenge, I swear but I am in 20-23 clays all year round. I know I can't go any further but It is great fun

"Who would want to buy a Birmingham boxlock...?" I would. In fact, I'm looking at one right now here in my den. It's decidedly preferable to many Spanish sidelocks. 25" barrels? No problem at all. Those who shun any boxlock in favor of any sidelock are simply foolish.

A little known fact. GE Lewis also made motorcycles. Many were supplied to the Russian Imperial army in the First World War . Unfortunately most never reached their destination because the ships carrying them were sunk by the German navy.

I have a similar Webley & Scott 700 (26 inch barrels) from 1964 and it can handle pretty high crossing clays from the high tower at WKSS. The chokes are 3/8 and full. I use 21grain comp x.

Guns were made to be shot. This one? Not often, but shot nonetheless.

I would strongly suspect that this gun was made by Charles Hellis and sons. G E Lewis wasn’t making guns themselves at that time. My amazing Alex Martin 3” wildfowling gun of 1954 vintage was also made by Hellis . Likewise a real sleeper with all colours purchased in March from Graham McKinlay, the Australian customs have only just released it to my importing agent!

Is there a provenance for t hi is gun? Is it possible that it was purchased and loved so much that it was only shot a few times and kept in “mint” condition? Is it possible that in another 50 -100 years still in mint condition it’s value could increase even if it is a “Birmingham box lock”. If so it’s well worth up to £1200 of anyone’s money to keep and lovingly looked after.

A Birmingham box lock is 200 times the gun a Spanish side lock is. I hope the lead ban doesn’t kill the mid grade English gun market. If they are scraped you will never get those back.
