The H & N FTT Pellet Weight Experiment With Si Pittaway

Hi there air rifle enthusiasts and subscribers,
In this episode of VerminHuntersTV I decide to do my own experiment to confirm what I thought that I already knew.
The experiment is to see the effects of weighing and sorting your pellets prior to shooting groups and targets.
I wanted to see if pellets of different weights but the same brand fired through a rifle would impact in a north to south POI making a bigger group.
To confirm my theory I shoot a mixed pellet weight group with pellets ranging from 14.7 grain to 15.7 grain, followed by 2 weighed 5 shot groups at 15.4 grain.
Watch to see the results. I think you will be pretty surprised.
Enjoy
Si.

The North to South grouping is a classic breathing mistake. Shoot when you breath out or in or midway, but always at the same stage of breathing. Pellet weight will make a difference. The North / South line is nearly always breathing which may have been due to you making a film on your own and trying to get it done for us as smoothly as possible. GREAT vids Si, keep em coming. If shooting prone try and get used to firing when you have exhaled, it gives a flatter base to shoot from.

That's a surprising variation in pellet weight, the consumer puts a lot of trust in manufacturers to deliver a reliable and accurate product, but the onus is ultimately on the marksman to check. I've never weighed or washed my pellets, but I'm only a casual plinker, this video is a real eye opener for me, and from now on I'll blame my inaccuracy on my ammunition :D Thanks for sharing the results and taking the time to record it.

Definitely proves a point Si, Iv'e noticed this even with expensive pellet's that they vary batch to batch. I have washed pellet's in the past but only lubed them on a couple of occasion's. I think I'll do them all from now on, modern pellet scale's help a lot now don't they. :)

Great video Si it just shows you that if you are after maximum accuracy it is essential to weigh, wash and lube your pellets. I have done these experiments with all brands and pellet types. Unfortunately the H&N's are no exception, in my experience all brands do it and some are worse than others. (except for a couple that are out there that is but they don't work in most guns LOL)

Just a short note handling lead items. After a while lead will oxidize and form a white powder (lead Oxide) which is deadly if it accumulates in the body. I had a job in construction years ago where we handled lead roof jacks and we were required by OSHA to where gloves at all times and wash our hands frequently when handling lead. A few guys got very ill from ignoring the directive. It wasn't pretty.

A real informative video as always from VHTV. It's with help from you that i along with a few more, are learning to understand and use our shooting equipment. We had a saying in the motor-trade to discribe someone who had a big toolbox and couldn't use them, "all the gear, no idea". Now with yours and a few other marksmen's help, i am getting a better marksman.

Thanks. Yes the H & N in .177 do seem from talking to others a little more consistent in weight. I'm not knocking the pellet though as its just amazing in my springer when I've weighed them out. Its just a shame the whole tin isn't at a better consistency which is down to the manufactures and the way they produce them. Si.

A great experiment I've always thought about is whether a heavier pellet will be more accurate at longer range or whether a flatter trajectory is better. It would be interesting to try 15.4 and 14.7 grn pellets at 30-55 m or so. Great video as always Si, keep em coming!

Nice video, shooting accurately is all about consistency and eliminating all the variables which includes your ammunition. I've found ftt in .177 good for this with approx 1.5% variance around the mean weight and accupell in .22 at 0.5% variance which is amazing. The weight on the tin is not always a good guide as you point out and it doesn't matter if your scales are out so long as they are consistently out. Thanks for giving us all food for thought lads

I always weigh and separate my pellets. Folks would be surprised at how even the best pellets vary in weight. For example, I mainly use H&N Baracuda match .22 which are labeled 21.14gr but they vary between 20.6 and 21.1, majority of them are about 20.9. I go out to 100m and that .5 grain difference is very noticeable at that distance.

Keep up the good work pal!

Hi mate, I think that both the TX200 HC and Pro Sport are 2 of the best spring piston rifles that you can buy straight out the box to shoot with. They shoot like a semi tuned SFS HW. I think it would make a excellent hunting rifle. I have owned a Pro Sport (just buying a new one as well) and I have shot the TX200HC many times and for me the Pro Sport is the better rifle as it fits me better in the shoulder. I would go Pro Sport personally myself. Si.

If you want more consistency, try JSB Jumbo Heavy Pellets in 18.13 grain - they are usually between 18.20 and 18.60 grains. I shoot those with a 45 ft/lb Walther MaximaThor (PCP) and the rifle loves them. 3/4" groups at 60 yards under ideal conditions. I just ordered me some Bisley Magnums (which are rebranded H&N Baracudas) out of curiosity and I´ll see how they do. It is best to try all JSB pellets in the .22 caliber. I can almost guarantee you that one or the other will shoot perfect groups.

I set a reg the other day... It worked out at 11.6 ftlb using a 14.66 as marked on tin. .. We weighed 20 pellets and yeah 15.3! That made the gun 12.1 ftlb not 11.6 !!! But H&Ns are lovely... My 77 and Hornet love em

Hi Si, as one of your previous comments showed there is some controversy over how to lube pellets, some say use a few drops of oil in a plastic beaker for PCP and others say use furniture polish for springers, what method do you use? great vid for showing what can happen with different pellet weights

There is not much of a north/south grouping on the sorted pellets though. the sorted group has more of a rounded disposition that would result from a more random distribution of the weights rather than a vertical string due to breathing. Amazing shooting.

@VerminHuntersTV
@VerminHuntersTV 11 лет назад
Well Mike i think you are asking a question here that you and most shooters with a little experience already knows the answer to. A bigger pellet diameter / size will have a effect on POI. The more or less friction caused by the pellet going through the barrel = more or less speed which in turn = a shift in impact at the target end. Some barrels only like 1 head size. My mrs old Ultra loved 4.53 mm pellets and 1 holed with them but it wouldn't with the same pellet brand in 4.52 mm. Si.
@VerminHuntersTV
@VerminHuntersTV 11 лет назад
This is true mate but the readings are only 0.1 out from each other with the same pellet weighted more than once. The pellets are supposed to be 14.66 grain but they are no where near this even with the error in the scales.

hi Mr.Si The grouping was not really bad from the three experiments. On 10shots, it also happen to us that one or two pellets comes out of the ring. Considering your distance of 25yards, and a grouping of 20mm that would be a lot of Wild Ducks on the table for Christmas all head shots. Happy Holiday to everyone, Lope

Watching you useing a screw to fix the peace of card to the wood got me thinking. I can screw a screw into a peace of wood and use it as a homemade target. The small headed screws would be a challange. It goes to show that a small diference in weight does have an affect on distance.

Hi Si, I found that the scales can give spurious readings (it seemed like you did as well at the start of your video?). Basically I don't think the cheap scales are particularly accurate (and mine were three times the cost of the ones you use), but even then I found that I could weigh the same pellet three times and get three different readings depending on how long the scales had been on for. This was despite letting them temperature equalise as per the instuctions. Food for thought....

Thanks for the nice comment mate, but in all honesty there are many more shooters that are a 100 times better at shooting than we are but don't make videos on RU-vid. We will keep practicing and doing HFT and hopefully by next year or the year after will be good enough to start and win a medals here and there in HFT. I want to go down the spring rifle route which takes quite a lot of dedication and practice. Weve got new springers being designed for us that will soon be unveiled Si.

Its a sizing issue Shoot a longer distance and it would show up as numerous group sizes same hole.
@VerminHuntersTV
@VerminHuntersTV 11 лет назад
There wont be a difference straight away buddy. Your missing the whole point as do many. For washing It takes time for lead particles to build up in your barrel and have a effect on your accuracy. You will notice the difference at range and after prolonged shooting with unwashed pellets. In regards to lubing this only assists in keeping your barrel rust free and in tip top condition for longer. If tested on a chrono it also sometimes add a slight bit of power mate.
@MikeRT4
@MikeRT4 11 лет назад
I wonder if the sizing has anything to do with the POI drops as well? Would be interesting to see if the ones that were higher / lower were slightly bigger / smaller size than the others, just to elminate this from the equation? This would then give a definitive answer that it was the weight that had more effect than the size? At present the experiment is only an "assumption" that the POI difference it is entirely due to weight differences and you know what they say about assuming ;).

@MikeRT4
@MikeRT4 11 лет назад
I know, but I was just wondering if the extra weight was due to these pellets being physically bigger, as it is a substantial difference, so the POI might be more to do with this than the actual weight difference - hence suggesting you check this aspect as well ;).
