I build a pipe lamp, from scratch, featuring a glass jug and then talk about some of the challenges to wrap up the video.
PARTS LIST IS AT THE END OF THE VIDEO.
Glass Jugs found here: Adventures in Homebrewing: homebrewing.org/?gclid=CjwKCA...

Use a tile cutting table saw or chop saw. I ran into this problem all the time when I make mine splitting glass. It’s more expensive but you will get consistent cuts. Also for the threads, you can score the first 3 threads (the threads on the brass fitting) in 3 places 120 degrees from each other to help set the threads. Another issue I had way back when I made mine the first time around.

I'll consider the table/chop saw for future builds. Currently, I'm not in dire need of one so I'll make do, for now. Scoring the threads of the brass fitting is an interesting idea. Do you have a video, of the lamp you made, posted anywhere? I'd be interested in seeing your results.

Thanks, Robert, it's a favorite of mine. Same one that's in the background of my Classic Cinema Reviews except it's more visible, here.

No earthing on the main body, so I'll suggest the name "widow maker" 🤷

Neat! How long did it take you from start to finish?

This project, under normal circumstances, would take a couple days, allowing for the Danish oil, epoxy and paint to dry... It took me several months, partially because of the problems I encountered and partially because I don't always have the time to work on projects like this. That and the fact that filming while I'm building also adds extra time to the project means it took WAY more time than it was supposed to. I also moved, midway through the build!

What's the size of the flange?

It's a 1 inch flange. Check the 18:35 point of the video for sizes of the fittings. Cheers!

Would we have to install a ground for no one to get shocked?
@AndrewPOlson
@AndrewPOlson 6 месяцев назад
I'm not an electrical engineer but if the wires are well insulated I don't think so. I'm going by my own experience; I haven't gotten shocked and I do move the lamps around on for various videos. My best advice is, If you are real worried about it, then use a ground. Better to be safe and have peace of mind than be sorry.

Forgive me if this was already answered somewhere, but can you give me a ballpark estimate of cost to do this project as cheaply as possible? In other words, if I use smaller, cheaper quality metal pipe and don't add the glass jug part, what kind of cost should I expect? I'm trying to do a project like this for a group of teenagers at my church's youth group but not sure what our budget would be per person.
@AndrewPOlson

Um... I hesitate to give a ballpark estimate simply do to the fact that there are so many variables for parts; where to purchase them, size, quality, buying in bulk vs not, buying from a supply house vs a big box store. I also don't know what/how far you are willing to compromise on parts. -Buying in bulk will save $ per piece, if your needs justify buying in bulk. Buying from a supply house it is cheaper than a big box store but watch out for shipping costs eating away at your savings. -Don't quote me on this but I would say, if you do your research, you could probably build a version (out of 1/2" black iron pipe) for roughly $100+. -That estimate does not include the cost of tools. Just a suggestion, go to a plumbing supply website and pick out all the pieces you need and then tally up the price. Then find the remaining items, switches, wire, etc (from whichever place you want to purchase those) and do the same, that way you'll have a good idea of cost-per-lamp before you make a purchase. I hope this helps.

The way it's done in Russia : put a piece of rope around the bottle,put fire on it ,after some time put that end of the bottle in a very cold water. Regards.

Thanks, Inna! I've seen that method used on RU-vid. I may have to try it one of these days. Cheers!
