The Hammerhead Died... (Shark Fishing Fail)

A group of shark fishermen fought and landed a hammerhead shark from the beach just to the south of where we were set up. The Hammerhead fought to exhaustion, as the anglers were using light tackle and unfortunately the shark died. Sometimes this is unpreventable in the world of land based shark fishing, but there is no such thing as 100% catch and release fishing, as all fishing poses a risk of fatalities.

If you want pics, why don't you don some free diving or scuba gear and take a swim with them, instead of harassing them by hooking and then releasing them. Smh.

wow...big baits for that trip!! Nice job on highlighting the importance of getting them back in the water quick. I agree with ya completely! Fishing for sharks from the beach is frowned upon by some. Luckily out on PINS here in texas, we aren't on beaches that have lots of people on them, so they aren't as much in the public eye. But even still, practice solid catch and release no matter where you fish for them. I hope to get back down to PINS this year and do more shark fishing. We still haven't landed a hammer or tiger, but hopefully there is one in our future. In the meantime...I will be tuning into your videos.

Just saw another 7-8' Hammerhead die yesterday because they (guys fishing next to us) wanted too many pics and had him out too long. I kept saying they had to get him back in (thanks to your teachings). They didn't listen. Narcissistic, irresponsible, and stupid!
@jengle1970
@jengle1970 6 лет назад
Makes me angry to hear that. I was fishing the Galveston Ship Channel one time and saw some guys pulling in some baby bulls, they'd just toss them up on the beach to die. Went over and grabbed them and released them - though one was DOA. I don't understand how anyone can fish, or do anything outdoors, and not appreciate the fragile nature of our natural resources and how easy that balance can be screwed up. Alcoholic weekend warriors that leave trash everywhere and kill indiscriminately need to be banned from the outdoor spaces.

Great info guys. Hats off to y'all, land based shark fishing is a tough sport and you really need to learn how to care for these fish to help there survival rate. It's possible any fish can die but you have got to do everything possible to save them. It reall sucks when they die on you but it's a learning curve, tough lesson to learn.
@Ninj_SRG

I agree with you guys on getting the hammer in and out as quick as possible. But you guys are fishing senators man, if you really wanna bring in a big hammer quickly, you yourself need to ramp up the gear as well. Fish a reel that has more than 30-40lbs of max drag and a 2 speed gearbox to really crank them in. Some of these hammers are pregnant and on top of that, fighting them can kill not only the mother but the pups as well.

Landshark Fishing you can get an avet 80w for 600 used. I started out with a makaira, then an everol 9/0w, then an everol 12/0, then an avet 80w trx, and now I got an accurate 80w that is probably the best reel I've ever felt. I saved up 500 bucks from work and christmas gifts and then I got my tax return in and after a little searching on the web I got the reel that I wanted packed with 200lb hollowcore JB and an shimano tallus IGFA all roller 80-130lb rod.

Shark fished here in south australia for the last 10 - 12 years. Mainly target big bronze whaler sharks landbased. Numerous occasions have had to just cut the wire and forget the photo, your photo is not worth your sharks life. I generally keep to a strict 2 minuite out of the water rule. This vid gives good advice, take it on board. Look after what nature provides us with!

I'm an avid fisherman and there are a lot of sharks where I live. I've had many encounters with them around the state and admire their form enormously. I'm not going to eat them (I've eaten them) and I can't see myself hooking one, dragging it up into the wash, yanking out the hook, putting the fish back and then repeating the whole thing for the sport. Seems like a lot of pain is being inflicted to no real purpose. Not judging or condemning. It's just how I think about it.

well glad to see someone is broaching the catch mortality rate on certain shark species. 2 questions, 1 do you believe the mortality rate for hammerhead and black tip are as high as research claims ( that's even with all precautions taken) and 2 why not just harvest the occasional black tip if as research claims the mortality is incredibly high even with 5he fish never leaving the water? BTW, I'm not a hater, I got called out for targeting large bull sharks where I'm from so I went to looking at mortality studies on tagged fish. Seemed to show it was a bad situation for a few species
@LandsharkOutdoors
@LandsharkOutdoors 7 лет назад
+Robert Nesbit I don't think a controlled study resembles what actually happens in the wild and the way anglers handle fish vs scientist are different as well. The results may reflect reality, but I think it's safe to assume that all fishing whether for shark or other species poses a high risk of mortality. It's a part of the game. Hammerheads I think get a bad wrap for high mortaillty rates due to the fact they fight harder than any other shark and thus by the time they are ready for release they are near death, which skewes studies. I have caught a bunch of hammers that swam off stronger and healthier than most other species, but it's bc I fish big heavy gear and bring them in fast, unlike some of these scientists who fight fish on undersized gear.
@robertnesbit1432
@robertnesbit1432 7 лет назад
Was wondering some of that myself due to the scientific research that keeps red snapper so heavily regulated and redfish limits so low ( I realize this is mostly Florida) .I had actually never given it much thought until I got accused of killing sharks for fun ( was still pretty relieved to find Bulls not as likely to die) . Like I said, not trying to rain on any parades, I do commend the concern and honesty put out by this video.

I fish for Pacific Spiny Dogfish in the Puget sound. One of the few sharks you can even reel up and keep. Until you can visibly identify the species they must never leave the water either. If you're fishing at a pier or it's just not possible to get down to the water it is best to just cut the line or leader. I prefer a single dropper loop and about a 4-6 foot of multi-strand wire or heavy duty mono less than mainline if it's a low pier. Have never caught sharks from shore. Shores here in Puget sound don't have enough life to support shallow sharks. Six and seven gill sharks are not commonly hooked but if they are the human contact from fishing should be kept to 10 seconds of unhooking or cutting the leader as soon as it is brought close enough to do so. Shouldn't take too long to reel in like a Halibut on the heaviest tackle.

What’s the actual best way to release a shark?? (Assuming it’s a ss circle hook in its mouth and the sharks exhausted), do u pull it on shore and try to remove the hook as quick as u can, or cut the line? And if u try to remove the hook, what’s the best method? Straddle it and lift the jaw??? Flip it upside down?
@bassnazi4713
@bassnazi4713 6 лет назад
Usually you just cut the line because the hooks you use rust out really quickly in the salt and even the sharks biology starts to work against it. If you can get the hook out safely you do but often times the line is cut.

That’s just a public relations type thing that fishermen say. You’re right. I laugh when I hear fishermen talk about ‘conservation’ because any time you put a bait in the water with a metal hook you run the risk of killing a fish. If they were truly about conservation they wouldn’t fish for sport. I see it all the time on these fishing forums boat fishermen talking about ‘I blackened my livewell’ which basically means they netted way more baitfish than they’re going to be able to use and end up throwing out hundreds of dead baitfish at the end of the trip. Needless killing. At the same time, they’ll scold a 12 year old kid for holding a snook the ‘wrong’ way in a picture and get all self-righteous. It’s totally comical.

All Hammerheads (e.g. Scalloped, Giant, Smalleye, and Smooth - bar the Carolina) are all vulnerable or endangered species. The only reason the Carolina Hammerhead isn't, is because its population is still being assessed (it was only discovered in 2013). Tiger shark attacks are actually rarely fatal due to a low bite rate. From 1959 to 2000, 4,668 tiger sharks were culled to protect the tourist industry, it only made the species Near Threatened, it didn't decrease attacks. There have been 111 reported attacks (only 31 were fatal). Bull sharks are also Near Threatened, but there have only been 69 unprovoked attacks (I'm not sure how many of these are fatal). Blacktip Sharks are also Near Threatened, except that's apparently not enough to start population management projects in Florida and other areas on the east coast.

Landshark Fishing he means legally lolol thats what everyone has meant i think. but i think the size limit for florida is like 14inches-24 inches with only one over 24 inches. so yes its legal. sucks about the hammerhead though, theyre beautiful. just dont like to give up.

You know what you should do, go out on a decent boat, throw blood into the water, and spear the shark when he comes by. My grandfather used to go hunting for sharks with his friend, generally by means of spearfishing as opposed to the boat idea I mentioned above.

I’m a hunter and a fisherman. Whatever you feel about sharks ,Or any other of God’s creatures. None of them should be tormented for our mir pleasure.. Harvesting animals for food is appropriate. The methods are often questionable there’s a right way and a wrong way to do everything.
