In a recent chat with someone about music theory, I was struggling to find a good example of the theory of dissonance: it is often used to accentuate a consonant (pleasing) part of a composition. This piece of music absolutely illustrates how effective dissonance can be. A droning ominous siren like sound is heard throughout. A sonic representation of the diabolical fascist State of Gilead (formerly the USA). Heard first in the beginning, the siren of fascism continues to erode the beautiful composition around it throughout the piece. As the state continues to erode the will of the handmaids that serve it... Until once again, it is the only sound heard at the end.
brilliant analysis, thanks for sharing this here, it's absolutely fascinating. I'm not an expert on the subject but for me, this track in particular (decontextualizing it from the theme) impeccably summarizes the mental condition in which Gilead puts people, continuous fear and extreme anxiety, harmonizing it in this case, makes it acceptable, and this brings it back to the context of the theme. thanks again for sharing your thoughts ( and experience ) here.
@@alicealice3743 Indeed. Living in such a dystopian "Big Brother" type state would eventually lead to mental breakdown. Even the wives suffer mentally. Yet, like this piece, when they are together (harmonizing), they all march to the same Gilead propaganda. Did you know that the writer of the books is doing another book because she feels the current president has mad things much worse for women & society.
@@alicealice3743 Do you know that women are using the handmaid's costumes to protest for women's equality & against misogyny? However, women are also buying Wives costumes. I saw a lady in a wives costume at the supermarket. I was dying to ask her what that meant to her. Was she a conservative christian who believed in doing nothing but raising a family & obeying her husband? It was so creepy watching her there. I imagined what it would be like to have the supermarket full of women dressed as wives/handmaids/marthas. www.bustle.com/p/the-hierarchy-in-handmaids-tale-ranks-women-using-a-few-revolting-factors-56497
Do you know where I could download just the audio version of this song? The one on the soundtrack (Nick and Offred) isn’t exactly the same, and it isn’t as long..
Yes....Book of Eli soundtrack, The road soundtrack, Blade Runner 2049 soundtrack, what you're hooked on is the melodic tone with ominous tones drawn out to create a sound that rises and falls giving you the sense of euphora or dread.
@@randytoye6657 Thanks for the suggestions. I posted this below as an example of how dissonant tones can create feelings of ominous tension. Hey I was wondering if you knew what music plays at the end of season 1 episode 1. I’m not talking about you don’t own me by Leslie gore. It’s the bit before that it’s starts are the gate when ofglen says “there’s an eye in your house.” The part in the music where offred and serena were looking at each other is so beautiful. If you know of it I would be so thankful💋
hi! thank you for watching! I'm sorry for the late answer. i rewatched the part you're referring to and i think its an extended/edited version of the same track i used in this upload. if you want to check this is the link soundcloud.com/a-taylor i've scrolled through the page a few time myself thats why i'm sure its an extended version of the ' Offred & Nick " theme, but this link you can find every single track of the seasons, S1 included.
i think its called 'birth', or 'June and Holly', and for the finale maybe is the ' truck to Canada ' one. You can find the complete OST here soundcloud.com/a-taylor
hi! i think its an "applause for refugee" version. you can find here soundcloud.com/a-taylor/tht3-applause-for-a-refugee , but i think is this one just edited for the scene.
