Just remembered I was there, I cringed when I saw myself at 36mins.43 I'm sure this was the second of 2 Manchester gigs , being a Sunday- so we'd assumed any filming would've happened on the Saturday. Anyway we went all hungover from a Saturday nite blast at Hackett s in Blackpool, typicall pills n thrills- wicked times but not so for next day, so we got semi energised on billy n stuff & experienced a top gig . I'm proud to say I was there and to see myself at 22 yrs old in slo mo, in blue denim shirt, I'm chuffed. -Representing WIGAN BTW.😉
Dude!! That is so cool!! My husband is from Weaverham and he turned me on to these guys. (I'm American, and 4 years older than he, I was in a miserable marriage, but I had a baby in 1989 and I wouldn't give her up for anything! Anyway, I wasn't there in many ways! 😂) He started me off with "Step On" and the rest is history!! I'm in love!! I just ordered their Greatest Hits CD.
Well spotted! There is a lot of great musicians in the back of band's of great front men like this, that usually don't get noticed enough in such a way, respect!
For me,this is them at their peak. Fucking awesome. These, raving,Es n trips,Italia 90 and leaving school, earning a decent wage, weekends with all your mates having it -1990 was the business👍🏼

Fucking brilliant. A pure mind mash of Psychedelic dance, rock and groove, thanks in part, i beilieve, to Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osbourne who just happened to produce Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches of which featured a bit of these songs. Whether you believe this was psychedlic trance under the guise of rock or vis versa, or neither, one thing you cant deny is it fucking worked. Im feeling it thru the screen. Very few bands could have achieved this kind of musical energy level from a crowd and no way no how it happened without the drugs and brilliance of Happy Mondays and the vision and groove of Oakie/Osbo
The Mondays were signed to Electra records in the states and it was the guy who signed them Howard Thompson who gave them Step On by John Kongos to cover for a label anniversary LP. It turned out so well they kept it for themselves! that's why they did Tokoloshe Man too
This was my first ever gig, I remember being about 15 at the time and only being allowed to go because my 2 cousins from Ashton under Lyne were going and they were older and responsible 😂 it was a blast and never forgotten, thanks Peter and Andrew 👍
If you only had 10 seconds to convey everything the Mondays were about, I'd play 2:46-2:56 of this clip. its all there. The hazy/funky, lazy/druggy delivery, oh and Bez.
Remember recording this on video when it was on itv and then putting my tape recorder in front of the TV so I could listen to it on my Walkman had to tell my family to stay out of the room and keep quiet lol I think that's the day I thought I'd rather be a rock star than a footballer what a time to be 15 my mum and dad had the beatles and the stones we had the mondays and the roses great times
I was there too, amazing atmosphere and the first gig I went to were the audience were respectful of each other, no pushing, space to dance and all smiles. One of my best nights out ever. (Deee-lite was another, playing just down the road in Manchester).
zoltansocrates sorry I didn't think you was God, I was a part of it. Love the Mondays but oasis inspired more people into bands music and clothes since the 60's but I have to agree slightly and say oasis was probably the first Renaissance youth movement
Thomas Clark , oasis were roses wannabes and admitted that at the time, some good tunes but that second album was a shocker tbh, its all good though, think about what the wee cunts have today and its easy to be smug
zoltansocrates haha true, but I can't hear any similarly in the 2 bands really, hair do and clothes maybe but I don't hear a Beatles comparison either, I only see one, they remind me of the rollin stones in sound but that's just my opinion
Pity it cut off at the end and we didn't get to see and hear the great Alfonso Buller shouting the call "MANCHESTER VIBES IN THE AREA HAPPY MONDAYS IN THE AREA SWEET SWEET HAPPY MONDAYS IN THE AREA COME IN COME IN" you just see him hugging the guys as they walk off stage. :(
one of the few bands that i'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sorry I haven't seen live, such a great band, they are even underrated - their LIVE performance have unique energy at times, so that fact alone makes me more sad... But cheers for the great boys & divine band, wish them heaven everyday all day long!
Wish they'd remaster this into HD, there ain't much clear rave days footage out there, thanks for uploading this, shown me a couple of tracks I totally forgot about
@@glenndouglas8822 " rave day's", I Mean footage From that era & the Mondays era,I went to the raves bro 89-93, I don't need to RU-vid them, just want HD footage ha ha 👍
Was this the gig when they opened up for New Order at the GMEX, with ACR in between? I was at that one. Went because of New Order, but the Mondays were the best on the night.
No it wasn't that gig, on this night Paul Oakenfold did a dj set as warm up, 808 state were support and Mondays were the main act. It was an amazing night
@@andygreenwood2206 yeah I agree with you Andy, I remember it clearly was only young and 47 now, I remember being excited to see the Mondays but being blown away by 808 state.. CUBIK and them lights oooomph
@@andygreenwood2206 yeah I'm same bud 47 now, mi mam and dad only let me go because I'd some cousins who lived in Ashton and they were older than me so were the "responsible adults" lmao. Yeah my first concert too this 👍
Shaun ,Paul ,mark , Gary ,Bez ,had to be the luckiest guys alive to be allowed to spend their days with a woman such as rowetta , and how do you go through that many days without asking her to marry you a thousand times a day ? My my she has to be the most beautiful woman EVERRRRR
