The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) runs 3,100 miles across the United States between Mexico and Canada. Motorcyclists wanting to follow this route normally follow the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDR) as it is easier and more friendly to motorcycles. Much of the CDT passes through designated wilderness areas and either does not permit mechanized vehicles or is remote and rugged enough to make riding difficult.
Continuing north from Antonito, CO it's into the most difficult riding of the trip. The Monarch Crest Trail is a 20 mile segment of single track constituting the longest continuous portion on the actual CDT, all of it above 10,000ft. From there it is a short trip over Old Monarch Pass, Tomichi Pass, Cumberland Pass, Cottonwood Pass, and into Buena Vista for a much needed rest day.
Nearly the entire Colorado section of the route is above 8,000ft with half a dozen passes above 10,000ft. While New Mexico was a challenge of sand and rock, Colorado is a challenge of rocks, altitude, and exposure. The weather at altitude changes in an instant and mistakes can have serious consequences when the trail is barely wider than the handlebars on the bike.
