The hardest part about learning to fly | student pilot
For most pilots learning to land is the hardest part about learning to fly - it certainly provided some challenges for me! What no one tells you though is how hard it is to read a windsock from 1000ft up the air. Maybe its just me, but reading the windsock has been the bane of my flight training so far.

From my experience as in instructor you are correct. The reading of the windsock is one of the more challenging checks we do. But we are constantly moving in relation to the windsock so our "view" changes. Can you identify a motor vehicle on the ground at 1000ft. Its not possible. Same here. Just remember its only another "guide". The only true way to read (and even then it can be difficult) is from overhead. In circuits I always assume its going to be the same runway that I took off on. Then on final I use a letter C (work your way around the letter). Look at windsock (outside) look at airspeed (inside) then aiming point (outside). Keep doing that scanning routine and you will soon see if the wind has changed. If it has changed do a go around and start over. Hope that helps. Keep up the good work. Cheers Biggles

Great video, i reckon the hardest part is the theory. The amount of stuff you need to learn memorize and understand is incredible, especially for a slow learner like me. I have watched a few of your videos and they are very helpful for anyone thinking of taking that step towards becoming a pilot. I had a chat to your instructor at the Air Show a couple of weeks ago, seems like a very nice guy.

Thanks for your videos RJW. I am an RPL student aiming for PPL (just for fun) Aldinga South Australia. I am having the wind sock issue as well as orientation entering back into the circuit after going x country. I have been reasurred that practice will sort it out. I also video some of my lessons and find them such a valuable learning tool to look back on. Thanks again for sharing your learning to fly journey; it is encouraging. Cheers Michelle

Making the editor's deadline for Sport Pilot magazine...and stringing together consistently good landings in the little Jabiru LSA55! They love to fly and fly fast, but they don't like being near the threshold. Another aspect of learning to fly was how mentally taxing it was. I love it! and thanks for posting these videos, they're great...cheers Anthony.

The windsock points to where you land and take off ..give or take a bit.

Great vid. Hardest part for me was figuring out "straight" in a side by side config, having flown gliders it was hard not to just instinctively look a bit over the nose. This cause some very poor landings where I was slipping and flying off to the side. Thankfully one of the instructors knew what it was and before the next flight we found a small chip/mark in the windshield that I could use. Pays to not have a perfect aircraft ;)

By far and away the hardest part is the theory, there is just so much information to take in it's mind boggling at least for me

I have only flown twice, and neither was at the yoke, but man I realized pretty quickly, HOW CAN PEOPLE READ THAT DANG LITTLE WINDSOCK?! I feel you! great video :)

It was probably cross wind landings for me

Mine were landings too when I was doing the maneuvers I was doing great. I just finally did my first solo. I uploaded it here on RU-vid.

How’d you know that you were the type of person who could fly? I want to do it and have massive business reasons for my company to have a plane, but I can’t help but think if I’m a person fit to fly.

Ive flown once. Did not do take of or landing but flying was the easiest thing ive ever did. (Not the theory stuff) I even managed to keep perfect altitude when we did some turns ( idk if thats impressive). It was the funnest thing ever.

I dunno man, my biggest sticking point has been MCA and not losing/gaining altitude, granted I haven't done too many landings so far but I've done better & quicker than expected

Ha ha! Yes landing sure is the hardest part. I'm yet to learn that as I'm currently learning to do flight level turns, ascending and descending attitudes. Just keeping those attitudes maintained and I'm doing really well so far. My instructor is proud of me. I'm better than some students he has taught that they just don't learn or not listening that's being instructed. I've done 3 1/2 hours of flying currently.

It's the last 5 to 10 seconds of landing. I'm just over 39 hours into training on a trike, and still, due to my poor landings, can't go solo. Everything else is easy by comparison.
