COMMON QUESTIONS? "How do I know what bin the item is in?" Answer: custom sku. It's in the item details section. If you dont see it, google "how to turn on seller hub on ebay". Once you log in to seller hub, the custom sku option will be in our new listings. Anything you type in there will show up when the item sells. You put an item into the "B" bin and type "B" in the custom sku field. The thing sells and you see "B", you know it's in the B bin. "Where do you get the golf club boxes?" Answer: eBay or a local supplier. 48x5x5. "How do you decide to do free shipping or calculated shipping?" Answer: it doesn't matter. If we want to do free shipping, we add the average cost to ship the item into the total price. For example, shoes cost about $10 to ship on average, so selling a pair for $30 plus shipping is the same as selling them for $40 free shipping. "What printer do you use?" Answer: rollo. But you can use any printer you want. We have a whole video about the Rollo printer. Just search "hairy tornado Rollo". "How do you know what the package weight and dimensions are if you don't pack the item until after it sells?" Answer: we've shipped thousands of items so we are pretty good at guessing the total weight and dimensions of an item without having to package it up. I would recommend weighing the item by itself and then adding a little extra weight to account for the box you'll need to use, and then use that weight.

Not sure if this helps anyone but when I put in my custom “SKU #” I add in what I paid for the item as a reminder. For instance “A-1” in the “a” bin and paid $1. Sometimes it’s easier to see it in your sku as a reminder for when u lower a price you remember what you have into the item ❤️

@@lorraine5257 not dumb at all! I don’t mention using recycled packaging materials in my listing. Another super cost saving tip I can pass along… if you have any auto body garages around you, ask if they will save their bubble wrap for you. A lot of large vehicle body pieces (like bumpers) get delivered in bubble wrap. Most of the time it’s clean. Hunting for and salvaging packing materials is almost as fun as sourcing (almost😂)

I have a friend that has worked for the Post Office for over 20 years. She told me recently when you ship a package make sure it can sustain a 5 foot drop onto a conveyor belt. So I make sure no matter what I ship it will survive that 5 foot fall with packages below it and above it so that I don’t have any breakages. I always wrap glass with padding below and above and I always stuff the glass itself with paper to help protect it . Interesting video, even after 20 years I can always learn something new so I appreciate these types of videos !!

Hope I found a nugget or two of useful info? Heck if I listed all the nuggets I came away with were real gold, I'd be the new star of Gold Rush ;-)back near the beginning is probably. Here's a little nugget back ...the glass mug you shipped probably has enough damping factor due to the glass thickness not to worry about it, but for thinner glass, such as a wine glass or fancy goblet, breaking often occurs because blow such as dropping causes the glass to resonate (vibrate) at a critical frequency ... exactly what happens when you see the stage trick of an opera's singer's voice shattering a glass. To reduce this hazard, put some crumpled paper or cardboard _inside_ the mouth of the glass to dampen any harmonic vibrations. That's your physics lesson for today ;-)

Im going to piggy back in this.. I agree with this, Dave! I have lost 3 vintage / one of a kind items due to the seller skimping on the box size and not adding enough cushion- items were crushed from impact of other boxes.! I ended up with refunds, the sellers lost out, and now I have disappointment and damaged goods. :( The 7th grade science experiment of dropping the ( protected) egg from a third story window applies here. Always treat your breakable items like the egg! The shipping companies are rough with the boxes!! Thanks for all of the great advice on your channel!

Once I sold a huge Minnie mouse plush to someone in California. I squished it into a large box with my husband supplying some man power so I could actually tape the box shut. Then I went to print the label and found out it would be like forty bucks to send in that box. So, I had to take it out and squished it inside an even smaller box and that got the shipping price to about half what it had been in the other box. I wouldn't be at all surprised if when the customer opened the box, Minnie popped out like a jack in the box! One would think this would teach me to make sure the box I have will ship for a good price before I tape it up . . . But I always forget!😀

I had a motor oil box returned and USPS stated that the reason was because these packages board flights with passengers and it may create a problem for those watching packages boarding the plane. I also wanted to let you know that the best item you can use for cleaning shoes is Shout Gel. Spray the shoes, including the bottoms and let set for a couple of hours. Then wash in the washer with other items and they will come out so clean, you will be amazed. Just the "gel" form of shout only. I think you can pick these up at Target. Thanks again and God bless. When you have glass like the mug you should put void fill inside it.
@gk-wu2zj
@gk-wu2zj 2 года назад
I really see no purpose in doing that. You’re protecting the item from external forces. If a damaging impact is strong enough to get by the external padding, no amount of fill inside the mug/glass itself will save it. The only time I would agree to fill the interior of a container is if you also have small objects in the box that might rattle around. Like a blender blade, pack the pitcher enough so the blade stays in place.

Since you don't know the exact weight and size of box until you ship, what do you put in the listing? Do you use calc shipping or flat rate in the listing? An idea for a video - What is your stores sell thru rate? How do you handle items that have not sold in a while? Do you lower prices when items relist?
@ltdan8671
@ltdan8671 2 года назад
This all depends on the item. For my ebay selling, I typically do free shipping for all first class items and factor all shipping locations into the cost, as it won't make a huge difference regardless of where it goes. If it's a heavier item or odd sized that I know is going priority or other shipping method, I will weigh the item itself prior to listing and charge a rate to the buyer just based on the item weight. Typically if it's really big and heavy, Fedex or UPS is the way to go. Then when it's time to ship, you can get creative/fiddle with saving money whether that's cutting box weight or using Priority A box or what have you. In short, there's not always a way to list that's the guaranteed best shipping rate for a buyer, but there's ways to list so you won't screw yourself in shipping cost.

For shipping, I let it calculate by itself which has not failed me, but I’ve been selling for along time so you’ll get to a point when you know what box you need, weight and shipping cost will be (ball park). they are using a scale which I do sometimes on large item or more then one pair of shoes. I set my items up to re-list by themselves and almost never lower the price on items. It will randomly sell at the price that your asking. You’ll be surprised like I am.

A few questions: 1) do you ever use the pirateship “box in a bag” feature for priority shipping? 2) where do you get your golf club boxes? (Not the usps tube box)

No, we don't. If you use it correctly, it's cheaper to just put the item in a box. You have to measure the bag before anything is inside.

I like your channel, but I have an issue with one shipping detail you mentioned. As a buyer, there's no gray area at all, for me, when it comes to priority mail vs any other method. Especially if I'm expecting/paid for priority and we didn't discuss it first. They are handled very differently in some cases, including mine where I have two post offices involved in every package delivery. Priority, ~95% they'll hand it off the same day they get it, and I'll receive it on time. Anything else, it may sit at the first office for an extra day/over the weekend. And depending on where it ships from, it may have taken an extra day or two to get there in the first place. So yeah, if I pay for and am expecting 1-2 days and you ship it in a way that takes me 4-7 days to get it, I'll definitely have an issue with that. Sometimes a purchase decision is made based on which seller can get it to me the quickest, even if it costs a few dollars more.
@tomw.4255
@tomw.4255 2 года назад
Yup, and it's not just that. It will ultimately hurt the seller. If you list it Priority 2-3 days, but then change the shipping label after the sale to a slower and cheaper 7+ day delivery, then it will be a ding on your shipping time (as a seller). Ebay has this weird cassini algorithm, where as a seller, it literally wants you to do everything perfect and the more you do, the more it will reward you, as a seller.

In the last 2 years, 10,000 transaction or so on ebay I had exactly 2 customers select anything faster than the cheapest shipping I had listed. It is so rare that I could easily just miss it it if came up again.

@jasonsprouse2803 2 года назад
I've had things that I had listed accidentally as Priority, that were under 1 pound. I've never had a complaint. At the most, first class should be 1 day slower. Sometimes first class is faster than priority, because they take different routes. Now, everything I have is packed the same day, and ships that day or in the morning...... Generally the packages arrive sooner than eBay estimates, because they are figuring in the 2 - 3 days that a lot of people take to ship.

@@tomw.4255 ... I ship thousands of orders a year. A lot to the West coast (I'm in Ohio). First class and priority take about the same time. "Priority mail" is just marketing hype, it is what used to be "Parcel post". The only time there is a real difference, is the Priority packages are loaded into the trailer first. If they run out of room in the last trailer, the first class packages wait till the next day.

When I list something I always weigh it and put that weight in the custom sku (along with location info). I decide then what kind of mailer or box it can best go into. If it can go first class in a polybag I'll add 2 oz to the item weight. If it has to go in a box, add the weight of the box plus 2 oz to the item weight. I sell alot of glass and I'll add 1.5 to 2 pounds to the item weight to account for the box weight and packing materials. I know how much all my boxes weigh. I'm seldom wrong.

invest in a little shipping scale from amazon... I believe Josh and Haley have the one they use under their Amazon list linked in the description. When I first started I weighed and measured boxes for every item I listed until I got the hang of it. Made some COSTLY mistakes by guesstimating before knowing what I was doing. Best of luck!!
@gk-wu2zj
@gk-wu2zj 2 года назад
Pack and weigh the item, then visit the USPS website’s postage calculator (I’d link it, but seems RU-vid thinks I’m posting spam.) Plug in the numbers and you’ll get the postage on the item. After a while you’ll get to where you can just weigh the item alone and make a good guess on what the postage will be. And no need to rush out and buy a new scale. If you thrift, keep an eye out for a kitchen scale. They usually have a 5 pound limit which is more than enough for most things. If you have the odd item that weighs more, bathroom scale.

Only thing I might hope to add is that with first class the price changes at 4 oz increments. So a 10oz package costs the same as a 12 oz. So if you weigh it just remember you can just use 4, 8, 12, 1lb for first class. Hope that makes sense:)

When you list something, you have to enter the weight + dimensions + shipping method. eBay calculates shipping based on that. I usually make a guess on dimensions and add a little to the weight of the item to account for the box weight when I pack. It's usually accurate to within a dollar or so.
@edwardshobbies
@edwardshobbies 2 года назад
When listing an item and having the buyer pay calculated shipping do you have to put the dimensions of the box in the listing? How does eBay charge the buyer the correct amount if it doesn’t know the size and weight. I just started selling on eBay. Thanks!
@HairyTornado
@HairyTornado 2 года назад
ebay charges the buyer for whatever you put in, so it's important to be fairly accurate when you list the item. We just guess and 99% of the time it's fine. But we have shipped thousands of items and have a pretty good idea of how something will ship when we see it.
@joecamerer2865
@joecamerer2865 2 года назад
I found that using calculated shipping really hurt my sales. The calculated shipping is usually way higher than the actual cost even if you put the info in correct. For clothes I just do a flat rate of like $6.00 for under a pound and $9.50 or $10.00 for over a pound. Sometimes you lose money if you have to ship really far away, but usually you can find a flat rate shipping option, like a flat rate envelope. You do pay ebay fees on the shipping, don't forget that.

It helps to buy a scale. Then you decide what shipping supplies you'll need such as envelop or box size. All books ad dvds and cds fall under media mail. The rest pretty much priority. But all items should offer 2 ways to ship such as priority, first class etc.

@@jonblablabla1014 Ebay calculates the shipping once you put in the weight and dimensions of the item. If it's more than 14 ounces it can't go as first class or maybe under 1 pound but anything heavier will need to go as priority. Books are under media mail so if it's 2 pounds it can ship as media or priority. Most items that are in the ounces can go first class. Also there's flat rate envelops that you can get from the post office padded and non padded that offers a set price but your item must fit into those sizes. custom sku.

I not only put my item number on it but I put the price I paid for it. That way when someone makes me an offer I can just go in and see the price if I’m out and about and know if its an offer I should accept or not. I’ll also put any special notes for shipping like it will be priority or in a flat rate box. I like to box my items up before I ship them so I know exactly what shipping will cost so it doesn’t come back to bite me in the butt later on since a lot of my items can go either first class or priority.
