The Hardest Pokémon Game

This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Me and my dad would play, I'd tell him what attacks I thought would work well and we'd come up with strategies together. Such good times...

And another reason its difficult: the bosses use actual strategies like earthquake and protect, or rain danc ludicolos

This is one of the most underappreciative games in Pokemon. It needs a Switch version.

He has way more teeth than any other pokemon protagonists. All of them except him have 2 really long teeth. One on the upper part and another one on the bottom

I can't believe Pokemon Colosseum is so old now. I remember getting it when it came out and loving it SO much. I thought Wes as so cool. Also, I thought the reason he started off with lvl 25 and 26 pokemon was because he was supposed to already be a competent pokemon trainer and not someone that you are following from their start.

Colosseum and XD are my two favorite games in the series. They're fantastic and something I hope Game Freak will be able to match someday in the distant future. The whole game being entirely doubles still seems like a change Pokemon should've kept a long time ago, but sadly here we are.

God this brings back memories. The final battles were INSANE to my 8 year old self, and I played the game multiple times trying to catch every Pokemon.

In addition to feeling like you're underleveled the whole time, especially against higher up Cipher, the Realgam tournament was brutal. A 4 trainer gauntlet battle, no healing in between, and they all have high level shadow pokemon. Not to mention getting Ho-oh is one the worst grinds I can think of in the franchise

Oh and there’s one more thing to remember. When it comes to shiny Pokémon in this game, there’s a glitch that occurs after catching the Pokémon. The shiny check happens twice. Once when you encounter it, and again after you catch it. I’ve had a shiny shadow Pokémon lose it’s shiny after catching it. Want a way to break your tv? That’s a really good way to break your tv lmao.

Finding out that I could try to catch them again in the Mirror B. battles at the battle tower place was the biggest relief my 9 year old heart had

XD is slightly more difficult only because the shadow moves are super effective on everything that’s not a shadow Pokémon. It makes trying to catch them jus a bit more frustrating.

I would love if Pokemon Platinum started with Dawn nuking Twinleaf town.

I think this is the perfect time to bring Colosseum back. The Pokémon Colosseum and XD proved that you could deviate from the usual formula and be successful. There are a lot of older Pokémon fans now that will want to buy it for the nostalgia, difficulty, and playing a protagonist more closer to their age. I would not mind if they decided to add more shadow Pokémon or add Pokémon from other generations. I particularly want a lucario to be a shadow Pokémon. Shadow Aura Sphere!!!

Colosseum and Gale of Darkness is amazing!! Especially Gale of Darkness! Colosseum laid the foundation of this spin off, but Gale of Darkness fixed alot of things from Colosseum, updating and brushing things up!

I think it's mostly story reasons why the game starts you off at those levels for your pokemon. Wouldn't much sense for the expert thief of an evil team to have only 2 level 5s. It also would be kinda weird to have an espeon and umbreon at level 5 too. mid 20s makes a lot more sense on both accounts.

No matter what happens or has happened, Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness will always be my favorite games ever. I have them completely memorized and I have written and published walkthroughs of them. I wouldn't mind getting it ported to the Switch but I'm probably in the minority that wouldn't want them as remakes or sequels. These games are too nostalgic and iconic to me and will always have a special place in my heart. Really wish my GameCube's lens would read discs better so I'd have an easier time playing them. I also noticed you used screenshots at 16:47 from the wiki I created. Makes me happy they proved helpful 😀

This was my first Pokémon game at age 10. Replayed it again at 22, it has not aged well, but it’s still hard as hell.

I love reminiscing about this game; the double battle strategies, the Mt. Battle grinding while eating paddlepop pawprints, the first time completing the story with just my umbreon left. Transferring Pokémon over to my FireRed to complete the national dex for the very first time (needed Johto starters and dogs) is unforgettable.

Thank you so much for talking about Colosseum and XD. Colo is my favorite game of the series precisely because of how different it was. And when I heard some of the dev story (ie they brought in outsiders to write it iirc?), everything made sense on the story. also, you bringing up the points on why it's harder made it easier for me to figure out why I love it! (also i found double battles easier? but maybe bc fly + earthquake combo) also, imagine a slightly modified nuzlocke run of this. since there's already a limit on the pokes you catch, maybe tweaking the "first pokemon of the area" rule somehow to work within the game's framework. but it would make an already relatively difficult game even harder.

Pokémon colesseum is one of my childhood favorites. I remember the big reveal of the ciphers boss. Wes is also just a badass. I love that he’s an older protagonist yet some characters refer to him as “kid” or “child”

I picked this game up for one buck at my churches yard sale, great steal btw! I loved the game but I remember literally screaming at the last battle. I thought it was just me, who was a little kid who didn’t train well. (I trained Umbreon and not Espeon because I liked it better 😂 now I train both) and after many tries my Umbreon finally tanks it and survives solely.

The best thing to ever happen to me playing Colosseum was learning the infinite ball glitch, all the post-master ball fights were so much easier to manage. I still think the single hardest fight prior though is the first fight with Venus were you can catch Suicune.

Well Mikey, you’ve inspired me to finally beat this game. At the time of this comment, I’m currently about to face off against Cipher Admin Ein for the first time (and catch Raikou), and my team is still only around level 38 (excluding Entei who is still level 40). Admittedly this is without grinding, but that process would still take hours to do, even with the Exp. Share. As for hyper mode, so far I’ve counted 15 or 16 times that my Pokémon have entered the state, and every time it happens I always groan. I’ll update this comment once I have the final results.

This game was incredible. I wish this had spun off up to today and we could have something like Legends: Arceus but in this almost Final Fantasy looking world

Some fun facts about these two games effecting my pokemon history: 1-These games are why double battles are my favorite battle style 2-Gale of Darkness is why Spheal is my favorite ice type. There's a great glitch in Colosseum where you can effectively duplicate pokeballs and never run out. Catching shadow pokemon is made sooooo much easier if you learn how the glitch works

The whole game is a bit of a challenge run, and really tests you as a trainer because you just have to make due with what you're given, which is one of the reasons I love this game so much.

Ever since Pokemon XD was released I've been waiting for Pokemon LMAO

I LOVED this game. One of the few pokemon games I played through when young and struggled through successfully. So much grinding but it felt SOOOO awesome when I won and caught the legendary beasts throughout.

Just finished XD yesterday and it was fun and didn’t feel too hard… but watching this and realizing why colosseum felt harder, now I remember why. Nice nostalgic video.

God trying to catch Raikou was an absolute nightmare, but I loved this game and wish there was a remaster. Also, I remember that certain nature's determined which was the best method of bringing down a Pokemon's shadow meter, however you could only see the nature after bringing the meter down 3/5 the way. A trick I learned was to have a bunch of shadow Pokemon on your team, have your character walk into a wall, and then tape the controller stick to have them keep walking, since that was one of the methods of bringing down a Pokemon's shadow meter. Eventually you'd see some of their nature's become revealed (some sooner than others because they respond to walking better than say, Scents), then follow through with the preferred method of purification and start again with a different batch. Also Mike, I wish you also talked about Mt. Battle in the video - the 100 trainer challenge that was required in order to get Ho-oh in Colosseum. I rember having to complete it Numerous times (though can't recall if it was Colosseum or XD) where winning with the SAME TEAM would grant you special ribbons and one of the Johto starters (this one was XD exclusive I believe), but man learning about the necessary parameters After already competing it the first time was gutwrenching. I love these games, and as I stated, I'd love to see a remaster. Heck, even a continuation of the story in the region would be spectacular!

I really wish that they would have another game where you were a villain, and actually have you play as a villain. I think it would be enjoyable.

A couple of thing to note about both Colosseum and XD are that a Shadow Pokemon's IVs and Nature are not determined until you first encounter them. Any future encounter will be consistent with the first encounter. Shadow Pokemon in Colosseum can be shiny but you won't know until you capture and either send them out in battle or check their summary. Also in many Shadow Pokemon have higher catch rates than the main line games. Throwing a great ball at a full HP with no status condition Shadow Entei is the same chance to catch an regular Entei with 1 hp that is paralyzed. At least according to the catch rate calculator I was using.

Colosseum & XD: Gale of Darkness as far as I am concerned are main series games if you train on Mount Battle before heading to Realgam Tower in Colosseum you can breeze through the final set of battles. Misdreavus is the only Ghost type you can catch in Colosseum

I've always appreciated Colosseum for the double battles and shadow Pokémon. The double battle format allows for the use of strategies and moves that are worse or don't work at all in singles formats, and the limited Pokémon options forced me to use Pokémon I would never have used on main games, and I really enjoyed all of my playthroughs!

You know, I never thought about just how absurdly hard this was back when I played it. Not to mention the purifying... I do remember grinding shadow Pokemon at the battle tower to deplete the heart guage so I could purify them. This game took SO long. I don't recall having much difficulty catching most of the pokemon, not even the 5-in-row catch at the end (just Master balled the last one, if I recall.) But man, this game was hard, and took forever grinding out shadow Pokemon to purify.

I think the Orre region would be a perfect setting for a legend celebi game. There's already a lot of gen 2 pokemon already in it, and celebi plays a big role in Orre. At the end of Gale of Darkness, the land was recovering, and wild pokemon were migrating back into the region. Because of this, you could help create the lands first pokedex with any gens pokemon being possible. You could also explore the lore of shadow pokemon. What if there was an ancient legendary pokemon that could naturally tap into shadow mode and create shadow pokemon. Orre is a vast and open region that we could explore. Once befriending celebi, you could go back in time and alter the land in the present.

Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness are my favorite Pokémon games. I’ve played them both multiple times, even 100%-ing them a couple times and I’ve cleared Mt.Battle in single sittings more times than I can count. I adore these games and wish for nothing more for them to be Remastered and released on the switch as part of a 2-pack,
