Struggle Dales is one of the most challenging sportives in the UK, but is it the hardest? The event takes place in the beautiful but brutal Yorkshire Dales landscape, and is not to be taken lightly. After plenty of training, Charles, Kathryn and I attempted the 108 mile, 3300m elevation beast of ride- have a watch to see how we got on!

Did it a few years ago in the same summer as the Fred Whitton and Dragon Ride 230km and have to say it was the ride that finished me off... IMO the climbs aren't as mental as the Fred, and obvs not as long as DR, but with a horrendous hangover and some lovely northern wind, I literally had not an ounce of energy left; it's a proper relentless course with hardly any respite. Scenery was incredible, organisation was mega. A proper good day in the saddle

Those other two sound like they'd be well worth doing too! Fair play doing that with a hangover 😱

@@willcowen2152 hangover, don't recommend it. I think I'm older and wiser now... I think :) Deffo try the Fred, atmosphere is incredible - it's a real community thing where people line the route and ring cowbells on the climbs, plus it's proper wild in places. Very dramatic scenery. Dragon Ride is great but it's gotten really expensive, the route however is really good (maybe not the first and last few miles through Port Talbot) and it's more about pacing yourself over a longer distance; the 230km route is great, I bailed on the 300km route because of horrific Welsh weather.

I was at the Dales bike centre on Sunday just along from the bottom of The Stang, looking to head along to buttertubs on a 100 miler this weekend as my longest IM prep ride. Looks a stunner of an event and the scenery is awesome. Nice section of fresh tarmac from Richmond to Reeth and its flat enough to take in the views through the valley :D

@@willcowen2152 haha, the headwind after the last feed took some battling mentally. I attacked the climbs but rode pretty chill inbetween. I thought it was really well organised too but I’ve never done a sportive before so have nothing to compare it to. Hope you got a good pic from Park Rash 😁

There used to be one called the Bowland Badass 167miles and 5500 metres. Don't Think they do it any more. I got to 107 miles and knee blew up. Should give it a try. Gpx still out there. Good vid thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

The Yorkshire struggle is a great sportive but IMO nowhere near as hard as the Fred whitton in the lake District, climbing up Hardknott and Wrynose pass with just under a 100 miles in the legs, those climbs are brutal on anyday of the week.. let alone after 99 miles, we rode in twice, once on Saturday and again on Sunday.... Never again 🤣🤣 Ouch
@willcowen2152
@willcowen2152 3 года назад
Kathryn's done both of those and definitely agrees they're worse than anything on the Struggle. We might have to give the Whitton a go at some point! That sounds like a heavy weekend 😬
