My favorite thing about the Deathrun mod is how it inverts the game progression. In the vanilla game, you build new technology to gain access to new locations. In deathrun, you explore new locations to build technology that makes those locations safer and easier to explore. You are constantly having to stretch out beyond your comfort zone.
RANDOM THOUGHT: What if in Subnautica 3, assuming there is multiplayer, they had proximity chat so that even though people are playing with people, you can still have situations where there is that lonely scariness to the game. Imagine that you can hear people’s voices only in bases or subs or above water, but underwater it’s distorted unless you use a radio in your mask, which could run out of battery. Even better, what if out cut out when your buddies died? Or certain areas cut off all communication via radio? I think it would be sick personally.
I love the idea of proximity + only talking when you have radios (perhaps special radios for vehicles/suits?) and/or are out of the water together. Maybe only talking underwater w/o radios is possible super close to each other, with limited volume. Also, of course, spawning in different pods.
This is beautiful idea, because I can perfectly picture hearing your buddy's distant voice screaming "RUUUUUUNNN" and as you wait for him to appear through the muggy water, you catch the briefest glimpse of him before he is snatched up by a mysterious creature and dragged away, his voice disappearing.
Really admire your dedication, even the trip up from the lost river with a seamoth at full speed is so nerve wracking, can't imagine a slow, slow ascension on a seaglide. Great video as always! Looking forward to the next
The gameplay and story is amazing enough, but what really hooked me back into Subnautica is how well edited your videos are! The flow, transitions, and timing with commentary is damn peak.
6:30 Depending on your difficulty it's either: 1. Only unbreathable while radiation leaches everywhere Or: 2. Unbreathable while you don't have an air filter integration chip. 9:20 The best pipe system entrance is between the Mountains and the Bulb Zone, but you'd have to contend with Reapers to get there.
I just did my first deathrun run, and it was SO stressful but SO much fun! The changed recipes forcing me to actually be outside my comfort zone and take risks was such a welcome change of pace! And the skills I gained from doing it in hardcore will make completing vanilla as fast as I can even more efficient and fun!
PDA: *Alterra does not recommend attempting the hold your breath run without a qualified medical crew on-hand* Me: Proceeds to hold breath every time underwater sitting alone in my apartment until I hyperventilate
After seeing you play this mod, I decided to give it a shot myself. I have only played the game on perma death mode, so I was like "eh, how hard can it be?". Bacon...Bacon I'm so sorry you're going through this. My longest run ended with me seeing a shadow on the ground, and looking up only for a reaper to swallow me whole in one bite. I have the clip of it too lol. Thank you for powering through this for us.
Bacon, I gotta say, I ove watching your videos. I am probably a solid third of your revenue from all of these videos. Literally my favorite Subnautica RU-vidr, you and Anthomnia. Keep on doing what you're doing!
You know, when I've played this crazy mod and had to gather some nickel ores I've quickly remembered, that when you go to the lost river through blood kelp zone there's this little precursor cache with a portal... So, just like you did, I left my Seamoth at 300 meters deep and dove into the lost river (where the ghost leviathan attacked me). From there collecting nickel was really easy, cuz the ghosty dissapeared somwhere, and I had free and safe oxygen supply. I'd really recommend you this strat, cuz it saves you hella lot of reasorces, thus the time grinding for them.
the entrance to the lost river you took is the same as mine what I do is I go a little further to the green pools and set up a moonpool there, as it's far enough from the crab-squids and the ghost leviathan (the path to the lava zone from there is also far enough) but it seems unavoidable due to the heightened aggression. over all it's the safest path though.
The seamoth draining energy when you exit make sense, it is simulating if you were equalizing the pressure for that pesky nitrogen level without making you wait 10 years to exit.
After your first video, I decided to play Deathrun for myself. I died twice but it was still good, make sure to get more solar panels especially if you're getting the moonpool this early, if you get the seamoth solar charger upgrade the exit energy 'fee' is practically nullified as you just get energy too quickly for it to matter. Make sure when you go to the Lost River you scan as much stuff as possible (not spoiling stuff). To get deeper into the lost river I did a similar strategy to you and found the best oxygen tank in the game and made 2 for almost 400s of oxygen which let me go from the 250m seamoth exit level to a base in the blood kelp zone at 500m, built another base just inside the lost river bone field which more than sufficed for getting every resource I needed there, the scanner room was AMAZING at finding nickel and crystalline sulfur and made it WAY easier so I definitely recommend building one of those down there. I also really don't recommend the cyclops because it doesn't go very deep for where you are at any point of the game till after you get kyanite so I never once used it other than for the shield generator for the rocket and just used a string of bases and the prawn suit. Again, just scan as much stuff in the Lost River as possible or you will get stuck soon. Good luck Bacon!
Somethings I found out while playing this mod Deaths are not permanent, if you die you still respawn (Unless you are playing hardcore mode, which perma death is on anyway) and the pipes work ABOVE water
or you can take the patient way : build an outdoor growbed and plant brain corals... doing that every now and then on the way down and you'll have a network of breathable spots along the way 😅
Ok I did some testing in the mod and found out that you CAN die and respawn, and it logs your death in the death run stats page. Hopefully this helps alleviate some stress you have.
To be honest, your solution to the nickel issue is quite good. What I did was instead going to the Lifepod 2 entrance and build a base in there. I left my Seamoth at about 500 m and then gathered nickel while TWO ghost leviathans were chasing me... I somehow survived and gathered enough nickel for my cyclops. And no stasis rifle... or prawn suit for that matter (in fact, I never got those in that playthrough in which I also never died)
Behind a brine waterfall in the lost river, there's a precursor gate with an air pocket. You can use that as a free base to refill your air tanks while collecting enough nickel & sulfur for vehicles & upgrades. On my first Deathrun (the original version) I wasted a bunch of time building a base, on my second run I stumbled into the air pocket and didn't need a base at all.
One thing I love when dealing with warpers is a repulsion canon. It’s so funny to watch them just shrink and vanish after I hit them. Bonus points if they hit a wall and keep going into it.
man let me tell you a tale. 1st playthrough of this mod... died to a brain short circuit and pressed E instead of Tab while in a seamoth and died to the bends( i didnt have the vehicle mod that reduces the nitrogen lvls in the body while in the vehicle) SECOND PLAYTHROUGH got even farther then the first game, got the prawn, almost all the upgrades and just needed to go down to the inactive lava zone and the lava castle to get kyanite. my BIG plan was to make like 1 or 2 trips there with some glass and titanium and make like 3 or 4 small bases just to get in them for air ( i would construct and deconstruct the heat generator for every stop), and eventually get to the lava castle and get back. IF I were to complete this task i would be able to go down to the lava zones with my prawn and i would be able to win ez pz. IT DID NOT GO THAT WAY! i mad my 3 little bases, got close to the castle and then it happened... A LOUD AHH ROAR FROM THE SEA DRAGON. i got inside my 3rd little base with air and w8ed. 30 sec passed and i went to check since i heard no more roars... HES STILL THERE! i get back inside, food, water and energy getting low. i w8 for a min and went to check. MF-ER STILL THERE GOING IN CIRCLES AROUND MY BASE! i get inside for the 3rd time and think. okay if i dont get away soon ima die here. its now or never! i w8ed for like a min or 2 then went out to try to deconstruct my heat generator, as soon as i do it and try to zoom past it BOOM i died ( i guess to a meteor attack of his idk) EDIT GRAMMAR
My favorite spot in the lost river to build a base (and a moon pool) is in the beautiful purple tree section, situated high enough where I can see everything outside my window (and conveniently just before the final section with the lava river). Admittedly, I found I could totally get away with not using a prawn suit because I am one of those “base hoppers”, building a single straight connection tube, (optional cabinet and battery charger) and lava, solar panel (they still work at amazing depths…) or bioreactor (using farmed mushrooms or whatever) powered energy in practically every biome. Having a lava river to the final destination is perhaps the most convenient thing *ever*. I have many “lava powered bases”and beacons dotting my path along it to get the final alien building. 🤣
I would have lost my sanity in the first part and you`re still keeping it up on the second part, and yeah if you get a normal gamer to play this game yet alone with this mod it would be confuising and hard, and the cyclops should be bacon`s might, bacon`s light, bacon`s sun, when i play`d this game for the first time i just was swiming around doing nothing.
Well, Statis rifle and Water Filtration machine can both be obtained by going to Degasi bases. The statis rifle blueprints can be found outside the Degasi base in the middle of the island, and also outside the purple mushroom biome base which is 250m deep. The filtration machine is also inside the 250m deep Degasi base.
@@TheLastBacon youtube didn't tell me you replied to my comment, but as I am seeing it now, it is an awesome ending to my awesome day! Thanks for being... well... awesome! :D
Very interesting playthrough, looking forward to part 3 :3 i love the "It was time to go to the Jesus Christ that is a reaper-" moment xD they'd probably be even worse in this mod, so at least double as scary
Reminds of very first playthrough where you explore a new world. Back then my way was to build scanning rooms everywhere. In some dangerous areas I used it to detect hostile leviathans from distance.
6:20 it's a setting, which when left on default, makes it so surface air becomes breathable when the radiation leaves. You can also make it so the surface air stays unbreathable, until you obtain the compass blueprint, and when crafted, the air filtration chip that lets you breathe on the surface without having to take a pump. also, the pump (and presumably the air filtration chip) do not work when in the aurora radiation zone (there is a slight visual difference when entering said zone). Don't make the same mistake as I did and lose a run to it :) Some good news: You can survive a Reaper hit on 2-3x damage with 14 hp!
@@TheLastBacon i've only done rather minimal things, like growth rate of plants decreased to 1/6th and set darkes level 1 higher. I've set other things a bit different, but nothing crazy like creature aggression or damage :)
Hey, good to see you keeping at it with this mod. :) It's challenging, but fun, making all the undersea dangers you got used to feel dangerous again. :P By the way, don't underestimate the value of scanning deep sea creatures in this mod. (Trust me) ;) 6:20 I've only played this mod with the higher difficulty settings where the surface air is never breathable, but since you said the surface air was breathable before the Aurora exploded, I'm guessing that fixing the radiation leaks is what made it breathable. That said, even when it's set to "never" breathable, there is a craftable filtration chip that renders it breathable that you can get after fixing the Aurora. 9:49 It's just as well that the warpers scared you away, since it looks like you were still wearing the radiation suit, which only has a crush depth of 500m, so you would not have been able to go deep enough for the nickel anyway. Incidentally, you went for a surprisingly long time without building the reinforced dive suit, considering it makes you a *lot* safer from hostile life forms.
@@TheLastBacon If this is sarcasm, please forgive me, since I don’t know English very well and mainly rely on visible gameplay, jokes, memes and individual phrases, which I manage to understand (translated by Google)
for the seamoth depth you need nickel, to get to the nickel you need a prawn suit to be comfortable, but for the prawn suit BOOM, also nickel and the cyclops is kinda obvious it would take something CRAZY or at least big
Tip : Build outpost with moonpools for seamoths and also try bulding asap a prawn with a grappling and a normal arm. Trust me. If you are crazy enough, try adding socknautica in combination with gargantuan, and try to finish the game in void😅 Edit: If you want to try it multiplayer, you have a experienced player here😊
Damn It has been more than 2 months since i havent watched any of your videos. The small assessments and the exams are all coming in bulk lately and i can barely open youtube. Feels good to be watching you after like forever and a little bit...
@@TheLastBacon they already love clipping through walls however I believe in you because you are the last bacon just any bacon the last one your survival skills are legendary
Bro, you are the best! If I would be able to get to the level that you are it would be insane. I love every videos you post, trough them I learned so much. You are one of mu favorite youtubers, an absolute gemstone. 💎
id like to recommend a mod the red plague i believe its called it changes the story and is far more difficult and scary the youtuber i was watching playing said he got tunnel vision and was in a cold sweat as its far scarier also everything is aggressive including the peepers
As someone with 1k hours I’ve also been attempting this challenge on the even harder Kharaa difficulty but not doing it on hardcore yet because I enjoy living😅
I once did a run where I did not build any vehicles or bases and built a pipe system all the way down to the sea emporer containment. Took a ton of pipes and trips to reach that far.
You can actually make a working bed in the moonpool! I did it recently, I put it in the far back corner and had just enough space to lay down (funny enough, I woke up underwater 💀)
Low key I think somehow in the earlier versions the reaper aggression was turned up as well, during one of my runs a reaper came from the other side of the mountain island to attack me, while I wad in the alien base. The same happened in that run where a reaper came from the front of the Arora to attack me in the mushroom forest (I was on the edge furthest from the aroura)
Bacon is getting cooked by the dificulty hahahaha. Using the pipe system is a bit grindy in my opinion, but at least it has a use unlike on the default game, because you mostly just ignore it. Sadly subnautica has not build with automation in mind too, so farm resources takes a lot of time.
I wanted to say that, according to the PDA log, the lantern fruit isn't nutritious (I don't know about delicious). It's used more as a last-resort food, but if it's your only food I guess it would be the last-resort food Btw according to the PDA, cooked/cured oculus is the tastiest food
