I was detailed to Engine 10 at corner of Ridgeway & Dewey in Rochester, NY.... During shift change E10 was dispatched, and the Chauffeur (Charlie Sherwood) from the previous tour was still hanging out. The call comes in and Charlie says: “That’s a White House with blue shutters. There’s a one story brown house next to it, and we caught a fire at the green house down the street - 117 I think - last month. There is a hydrant right across the street.” I thought he was BULLS$&TING. He WASNT. He knew his district that well!!! RIP Charlie Sherwood, it was a pleasure knowing you and working with you.

I live in the area of this department, I wanna give out some key points that I didn’t see pointed out, 1. This is a very rural area, hydrants are very rare, I’m not sure if he was getting water from a tanker or what. 2 this houses driveway was super long, so He had to run with that supply line all the way down the driveway. 3 this crew was a 2 man crew I believe, and they had that lined pulled within one minute and 30 seconds of being on scene. This is a great department and deserve way more respect.

Glad you mentioned this rural location. I lived in Licking County for ten years and am now a member of a rural VT department. Pond set-up and draft is an entire other layer, procedure, and to a degree - an art.

Very interesting... In Germany the Driver / Pump opperator has kind of the same jobs He is responsible for: - Driving to the scene - Pumpopperations - Radiocommunication with dispatch - responsible for the SCBA opperations - hand out seperate tools - responsible for every tool to be in good shape and working

At our dept, same except dispatch radio thst is handled by captain or whomever is acting which would be engineer after captain. Also scba is primarily when we have to change packs. It’s a lot the driver/operator must do.

Radiocomms can also be performed by the crew on a seperate vehicle, like the "ELW - Einsatzleitwagen" or just command vehicle in english. We have one at all bigher stations in our rural area, which solely does radio with dispatch and all Captains on scene and also does management stuff like coordinating vehicles and crew and so on. Those are the guys that usually know everything on scene. Getting water to the engine is usually the task of the "Wassertrupp" or water squad.

David Decker is a real asset to this department. I love watching him work. It's somebody I wish I had worked with when I was a firefighter. His crews are always the best, well trained and super quick, which is a testament both the Chief Decker as well as the rest of the Admin at Newark. That city needs to be patting their fire dept on the back!

something else to note: they’re also frequently working multiple apparatus as they work together to help one another to get pumps going as much water as possible flowing. if one has an issue you have the other helping to fix it immediately.

Excellent points! Your accountable for all the equipment taken off the rig, getting it all back, rehab supplies are in proper working order, observing the overall scene, etc. It ALL starts with the vehicle check out in the morning.

I've been following your channel for a few months now and enjoy your break down of incidents, you do a great job. Now Chief Decker runs scene command like a well oiled machine and you can see it in the performance of the Firefighters under his command. They all move quickly to take care of assignments and like you said they were ready to work as soon as the air brakes stopped the apparatus. Chief Decker is a top shelf Battalion Chief and I really like to watch his people work. Now you did a reaction of Oklahoma City FD to a working house fire and again like you said they were all ready when the truck stopped and had water on it in less than a minute. Take care and be safe. You should definitely react to a Dutch firefighting channel called "Brandweer Lunteren" it is a voluntary station which documents everything from call to return to station. Often multiple firefighting POV's and even POV's from the volunteers being called from their day to day jobs. Their videos have English subtitles btw!

I'd also say that being a driver/engineer is also one of the most trustworthy jobs on scene. As the man on the hose, I need to be able to trust that you will get me water when I need it, with enough ass behind it to get the job done. Same thing headed to scene. I need to know I can trust you to drive this truck safely, that you can get me there without killing me or getting us lost and getting someone else killed

@@emmanuelawosusi3276 Couldn't tell you off the top of my head most wildland fires. If I had to take an educated guess, probably CalFire. But FDNY is the busiest dept in the US. for calls. In 2019 alone they ran 2.2 million calls

what i love doing and makes my BC go crazy is i get out a salvage cover once i have water for myself and i’m giving water to interior and throw all the salvage and overhaul equip on it, i like to also pull out a water cooler and cups and get some extra bottles out. i make sure that i can get anything and everything they need ready to go when they need it.

Being a driver does involve many things. We were so short of Drivers at my Station that in my last week of Service, of a 30 year career I was Officer in Charge and Driver and turning up an an incident a firefighter took over the pump whilst I directed operations.

We have a game at our local airsoft field called rescue randy, where you have to drag a dummy (randy) from one side of the arena to the other. Randy is made purely out of firehoses, and is heavy as all get out. I dragged him 50 feet and had to sit down for a while, and Im pretty in shape. Massive respect to this guy

It was my favorite job. When I got hired full time I had 2 years of volunteer experience and 1 year of federal wildland experience. I got promoted to driver while still in my one year probationary period as nobody else at my station was really seeking to move up. I had alot of responsibility as a 21 year old "kid". I can remember my first fire on the nozzle and my first one on the pump. There is alot of work to be done. First and foremost if you don't make it there safely then you haven't done your job. Make sure we have all the hose off and flaked out. Get them water at the right pressure for the stretch. Secure a water supply. Get tools staged at the front door along with a venitlation fan nearby, Water cooler (and it better have ice water) staged on the front bumper with cups. Monitor radio traffic. Get incoming engines whatever tools they need off my truck and make sure I get it back.

In 2018 I had an arsine set fire to my back deck. A dog walker saw the smoke and called 911 really early at the start and paired with the quick response of my local fire department they were able to put out the fire before it spread to the house. My deck was the 3rd one hit in a row in a chain of arsines. I lost my BBQ in the fire but it was just a cheap charcoal one and there was no propane tank to worry about and insurance was able to take care of the deck at the end. I still have pictures of the damage and from when the fire department was spraying extra water to ensure the fire was out. With the design of my deck it has a privacy wall side that is all wood and on the section that was furthest away from the house it was fully engulfed up to the top and the fire was higher than the house. The fire department started putting the fire out when the wood right up to the brick of the house was catching fire at the bottom. If the fire department got here perhaps 60 seconds later it likely would have moved into the house, it is really scary how fast fire can be, all the warnings about it are no joke at all. We believe that the fire started at the bottom back support posts of the deck as that part had the most fire damage and that was the only part where the wood was fully burned through. There is no way my BBQ started the fire with a stray ember as it happened a few weeks after the last time I used it. The fires were happening between 6am to 8am in the morning on a weekend morning just about every weekend with my deck being the 3rd deck to be set on fire in the area so all signs indicate it was arsine. In the end I am very thankful and appreciative of my local fire department and I understand that it is a hard job both physically and mentally. Sadly the person setting the fires still had not been caught yet but the fires did stop after my deck. Perhaps whoever was doing it got scared off from doing it again. At least no one got hurt. The vast majority of UK firefighters are also driver/pump operator/radio operator/Stage 1 BA entry control (if necessary); a multi-talented role. We don't have dedicated drivers. Most qualify as drivers about the four to five year mark and take driving duties by daily rota. That way all operational firefighters are 100% familiar with the role. The system works well but even so there are times when drivers are thin on the ground. On the odd occasion I've had to take on the driving role as well as being OIC and then on arrival a none driver has taken over the operation of the pump and radio comms which EVERY UK Firefighter is qualified to do without exception. Hydrants in the UK are generally about 200ft apart in urban areas so that means you are rarely any more than two hose lengths from a mains supply. Whether than mains supply is any good is another matter but shipping a standpipe into another hydrant on the same poor main is counter productive. That situation is rare in urban areas but quite common in rural areas. However the location of all open water supplies is mapped out and available on local pumps, control units or from the brigade control room. Even private swimming pools are listed and can be used law for firefighting. Indoor pools have to have a fire brigade outlet. Topography and water supplies are high on the training agenda for probationary firefighters and teaching them the tricks of pumping from shallow streams was one of my more pleasurable training drills. The look of amazement when you get a large jet to work from what looks like a drainage ditch makes me smile no end. Things like that aren't Inthe Manuals but once learned are never forgotten and passed on by the same people when they are in supervisory rank. Best job in the world.

I'm my career I was a firefighter, went to school to be a paramedic, also went to engineer school so I could drive (ADO pumper, aerial and tanker), and went to school so could be a fire officer. I wore all 4 helmets until I retired in 2016 and by far, the best job was driving the ladder. The tiller seat was fun too.

I have another job that’ll work around my ff schedule, but I just like knowing how much people make because I want to know if it’s worth cutting my job and instead focus fully on ff and paramedic school. One thing you didn’t state was that this was a rural fire. When you talked about hydrants and the possibility of them not being working or needing an alternate water supply, you also have to consider that in this scenario, he was prepping for a tanker to arrive and set up a pool. Great video though!

Thank you for all your great knowledge, talking about what it takes to be a Driver of Fire Rigs. The supply line he pulled off back, looks like he was pulling to Road for next Tender/ Tanker or water backup supply. This area looks like it doesn't have Hydrant's on street. Country remote area. Probably home on well. ( If people build out in NO water mains on streets. Build a portable TANK with a Fire Department 2-1/2 Discharge fitting, with FD threads. ( Build your OWN water stand pipe system. With all the plastic or cow watering tanks on market now. Very inexpensive to do. Just my Humble opinion, or buy a used Fire Engine, ( some go really cheaply in the $1000 about) that has a water tank that doesn't LEAK. The pump doesn't even have to work, just have it for standby storage of 500 to 750 gallons, you just flush out water every so often. If you have a POOL buy a small water pump ( Harbor Freight) with FD threads, to draft out of pool for fire protection of your property. In remote areas FD will NOT be to you quickly. Build your own Fire Department. What can you do as property owner to Prevent a Fire spread on your structures.

On our department the pump operator also has the duties of maintaining accountability until additional manpower shows up….as any one who’s ever done the job knows it can be a stressful fast passed first few minutes of a working call.

@@emmanuelawosusi3276 in the UK London Fire Brigade has the most structural fires. Not sure which has the most wild fires. Although Greater Manchester had a really busy summer in 2018 with two large wild fires - Winter Hill and Saddleworth Moor.

That was educational and instructive. In our local department, the engineer may show up chauffeur style, not in turnout gear, but with it available, so that he is not tempted to forget his primary mission--support, not attack--but may change roles if exigency occurs. [This is in line with the policy that the Bn Chf not get far from his vehicle: you can't do your job if you get sidetracked into another one.] I must say that a great deal of what that engineer did was not common in an urban department, as water supply is not likely to be lost suddenly, and a second alarm crew may be only five minutes away. I do appreciate you mentioning tactical and situational awareness, because the key to effectiveness is readiness, to which the key is anticipation. In that regard, the good engineer does not get tunnel vision. One other part about pressure monitoring is that it can be an important safety indicator, as when pressure readings on one outlet suddenly surge or plunge. All in all, this was an excellent presentation.

@@emmanuelawosusi3276 The moderator may give better scoop, but Firehouse Magazine's survey shows, hands down, Chicago has more fires per year. NFPA says greatest home fire risk is in Detroit, which also is verified as the city whose average for fire calls per house is the highest in the Nation. I got no data for brush fire calls for a city, but LA County seems to have the most brush fires, steadily worsening since 2000. Drier weather, higher temperatures, and increasing populations, coupled with an unfortunate decline in safety consciousness, as well as an increase in the appetite for sensationalism and excitement, regardless of source, which has increased the incidence of arson, all are factors in this rise. I truly miss the "Only You" fire prevention ads of the last century, whose reduction, I just realized, coincided with the rise in forest and brush fires of the last generation or so.

And don't forget the Ladder Compamy . The Engine has more hose than the stick has extrmsion. Give him the best, clearest spot. Always pull beyond the fire.

A mentor who was a driver for a big city FD mentioned a case in the news where a driver got lost and this was BIG BIG BIG trouble because the FD was intolerant of drivers that didn't know "their turf."

Enjoyed the vid. Only problem I have is, as a driver parking is really important. Never become a problem so don’t park close to the incident. They are way to close. A garage fire has multiple explosion hazards. Stay safe

I wonder how many departments actually have "assigned " engineers/pump operators? Is my department out of the ordinary when I say that we rotate assignments? For example: we run 24/48 with 6 personnel, minimum of 4. One day, you're the engineer. Next shift, you're the FF. Next day, you're riding the medic. Next day, back to engineer and so on. BTW, best thumbnail ever...wake up Jason! 😉

I'm currently 15 and have wanted to be a firefighter on and off since I was 4. Recently my interest in fire fighting has peaked again and I think for good this time, should I start studying in my free time or is it too unnecessary at the moment? I'm pretty sure my school has classes for fire fighting, the police force, military etc but I will have to take those classes next year as I am already doing multiple engineering classes this year.

Take those classes man! Use all your resources, and usually if you learn about something you’d want to do it more or you’d learn if you really want to do it!

@@emmanuelawosusi3276 well if we're talking United States I will probably have to go with California department of fire here they contract with cities to provide fire and medical services and they also are the main ones responding to the wildland fires here in California if we're talking out of the United States maybe every department in Australia.

Get both. I joined a volly dept as a junior FF in high school, but was not seriously considered for selection on a city department until they knew I was EMT with a few months ambulance experience. Stay in shape, listen to the senior members, and train on the equipment every second you can. Best wishes and stay safe.

Chief Decker is my hero I'm not a firefighter but if I where I would love to be part of his crew the man knows what he is doing he's the goat of fire Chief's in my opinion and I'm sure there are more I watch all his videos and there is another out of Boston cannot pronounce that name he always says ok the message thanks for sharing these verses

My neighbor at my cabin in Utah is a fireman in Vegas. One Thursday he said got to go to work and Sunday night he was back on the mountain? I said I thought you had to go to work and he answered I DID! My next life I'm coming back as a fireman!!!

bY NOW ALMOST EVERYONE NOWS THE tv SH0W "Emergency" I got a little interested in what some of the responsibilities are for the engineer. Now if I understood it correctly the engineer is not only responsible for much of what you have mentioned but also are responsible for inspections and some repairs of the whole water system on the truck. That is of course LACFD and there are a lot of differences with FDs.
