The Hardgate Mystery is a "true" Ghost Story set in a haunted house in Lincolnshire in the 1880s. A family rent an old house for a year and are troubled by mysterious noises, doors that open and close, damage done by an unseen hand, and despite the sceptical and humorous approach to their resident ghost they eventually leave with relief having learned the horrific story behind the haunting.The author was living in Cardiff when he wrote this story for the Weekly Mail. He claimed it was true with witnesses to prove it!

Really well read, thank you. I love the way Bridcut tries to be lighthearted and amusing when he's actually frightened.

I loved this story, and thank you for omitting the tragedy of the dog.

I love this abridged version and agree the cut material was redundant and gratuitous.

Thanks. I think the balance is in favour of my edit.

Thank you! Very much enjoyed this and pleased you omitted the part about the dog. As soon as there’s something about animal cruelty/death in books & films I don’t read/watch any more. Just puts me off.

I agree with you, in fact I do not find animal cruelty/death scary at all, I find it off putting

@@bethena1855 I did, that very nite. I forgot to tell you. I reckon the other was the Silsby (Sisley? Forgot the name) House, with the sailor ghosts and the lovers? Enjoyed that one too. Are you only doing ones that are (at least, supposed to be) true, or do you think you’ll do more ghost stories? I didn’t think this one had supposed to have been true, but I only ask, as much of your content, from what I presume to gather, is primarily about unsolved murders, and hauntings, primarily in Wales… at least that’s what the last story intimated to me from what I recollected of having previously watched on your channel… didn’t recall where exactly this one was to have taken place. Either way, thanks a lot. Cheers & best regards! Edit- Oh, it literally says so right in the title, duh… and I hadn’t listened to the end, till now. Definitely will listen to this one again as well, as I did with the story of the haunted beach mansion with the sailors and lovers… anyways, sorry for my stupid questions.

@@StalinLovsMsmZioglowfagz Thanks for listening to both stories. I'm planning some more but it's not easy to find ones nobody else has done. Have you listened to An Undertaking and The Man in the Norfolk Jacket? These are on my channel. I've done four ghost stories so far.

Thank you for this story. I wouldn't have been brave enough to stay there! I'm glad you left out the dogs death because that would take it to a whole other scary level that I wouldn't have felt comfortable listening to.
@michelleduplooymalherbe2837
agree about the dogs - that would have freaked me out far to much like you said on another level

Thank you for leaving out the dog's death. I love victorian literature but I have to stop reading a story that involves animal torture or death it's too hard to read. Thanks for making this story accessible without that.

That's truly terrifying. So... We never know who died? Wait. So Bins had been haunting the house for so long that the lady even took her life out of fear of him? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa Why did I listen to this right before bed.....

Good reading, but, sadly, abridged to omit the bit about the dog.... Modern bowdlerisation always seems silly.... The full story can be found in the The Weekly Mail's archive on the Internet.... I have a volume of Bridcut's short stories....

I'm glad you liked my reading and I am pleased Bridcut's book has survived somewhere. As for my decision to cut out the canine death, well, it wasn't essential to the story and some RU-vid audiobook channels have had a lot of flack about doggie demises in such stories. I've noted your disapproval but had I kept it in I would have had more complaints. I chose to spare my sensitive listeners any potential distress and myself any unpleasantness.

@@bethena1855 Thanks for missing it out. Not silly at all. You'd have lost listeners. My dog died not long before I heard this so I'd have found it upsetting though the death of the girl who jumped out of the window was not exactly pleasant the dog would have finished me. Make of that what you will!
