Out the door after TT&L I wrote a check for $5,500. Sold it a year later for $8k. This was back when there was a 6+ month waiting list for new Harleys. Which created a premium in the used market.

BLOCKHEAD most dealerships want to push you away from used bikes. I was going after an iron 1200(which I talked to the sales manager about). I got to the dealership and two salesmen intercepted me before I could see the manager, and tried to get me on the new bike. I know my finances and feel like I have a better chance at purchasing used over new. Why is that?

What? Full of lies. Doctors have documented humans lie and they don’t realise they’re lying. It’s fact. Blockhead says skinny front tyres are for cornering. WRONG! He also says to modify your professionally built and tuned bike and get it done by unwise non experts. He scrapes the bike in corners and tells you to boost power so you end up smashing into a tree and tune the uniqueness out of your unique bike. All the videos need to stop!

For me it’s the 1200 Custom, 4.5 gal tank, fat tires, comfy ergonomics. It’s a very comfortable bike that can still be ridden hard in the twisties or cruise all day long. I had an 08 but that 21 in front wheel felt sketchy to me but to be honest I should have kept it. I’m now on a 95 1200 which is awesome but not as comfy as current models, nice vid Block!

I took a 4000 mile trip on a new 1974 1000 Iron head summer of 75. I had my first bike a 1965 305 honda scrambler in 11 states. My point is don't call a sportster a city bike. It's all comes down to desire.

Agreed! I rode a 500cc 1984 Honda Magna from Great Falls, MT to Chico, CA and back. You think that I wouldn't do that same ride on my 1200 Sportster?

The Roadster is the best of all of them IMO. Better front and rear suspension, better front brakes, 1200 engine with a mid range tank. The seat height might be a bit high for some but thats minimal, the bars might be a bit low for some but thats easily fixed.

@@vector6977 nah I changed it and set a zero drag bar , plus a 2" riser, best decision I've ever made on my customisation. It doesn't kill the line of the bike, and it's blacked out, OEM are chromed

In 2016 I bought a Model 48. Things I have changed: 1 1/2" risers to lift me out of the jack knife position. A Harley 3.3 gal tank, I developed range anxiety and now it's a town and country bike instead of just a town bike. Swapped out the alloy wheels, why make a retro bike then put alloys on it. It now sports Harley spoked wheels to help complete the retro look. A Harley spring seat to smooth out the unseen bumps in the road. If I see a bump, I can set myself up for it. The bumps I can't see will travel right up my spine and click my teeth together. Aesthetically, I relocated the coil to relieve the congested look above the front jug and did a 1 1/2" tank lift to wire tuck the wiring harness. Sportsters may not be the fastest motorcycles out there but off the line they are the quickest. I love my Sportster.

Proud owner of a 2005 XL 1200 custom. Bought it from the dealer as 2th owner with 7400 miles on it in 2015. Now it has 20505 miles on it and it stil lruns great.

1200CX Roadster...the suspension and handling, the riding position, going through the twisties, just no other Sporty can compare. I wanted a taller handlebar with more pullback for mine, customizing is what these bikes are all about!

Great advice on the test ride don't let the salesman push you into something you don't like.that's what my local dealer tried to do he put me on a Fatboy try to talk me out of a Sportster and it's like, dude that boy does not feel comfortable to me at all. I actually had to go to a different city and buy the bike

I got the Iron 1200 in twisted cherry about a month ago. It's my first bike! Fun as hell, and I'd say the best bang for the buck of all the sportsters. Watching you really helped convince me...AND THE WIFE to get riding on my first bike!

It's really interesting because over here in the UK there's another Sportster on sale, the Superlow 1200T. It's a Superlow with a 1200cc engine, much of the same styling with the chrome in all the same places, but adds a 2-up seat, drops the indicators onto the lower triple-tree of the forks, and adds a big set of panniers and a big wind-screen. It's also the most expensive Sportster offered by HD over here.

@@Oddman1980 all the sportys that I seen had mid controls and the custom has forward controls (foot pegs). You can get conversion kits if you like forward controls on a different model.

@@Oddman1980 I had an 03 and a 07 Sportster 1200 custom. The 03 has the 3.3 gallon and the 07 has a 4.5 gallon. 3.3 = about 90 miles a tank. 4.5 = about 135 miles a tank full.

48 with a HD right hand master cylinder LCD fuel gauge and a swing arm saddlebag with a 1.5litre fuel bottle. It looks awesome and I no longer have to worry about my fuel situation! Haha also, the 48 has forward controls! With that being said I am not sure how you only got 90 miles out of a 3.3 gallon? I get more than 90 miles a tank on my 2.1 gallon.

1203cc is the exact cubic centimetres for the 1200. Also one thing most people don't know, the Sporty motor has the straightest vavle train out of any Harley Davidson motor, simple because technically it has 4 cams in it, or a single cam per each valve in the motor. Cool little thing about it.

My wife has a 2012 1200 Custom and had dumped so much money in it for short shocks, wind screen, pipes, seat and bars. Bags next year! Great bike. She did a 2108 mile trip on it last July.

I just picked up a 2014 Sportster Superlow because it was a good deal. She needed some work, but looks clean. I rode it from Oakland, CA to Packwood, WA without any issues and got 50Mpgs!! Awesome little machine. Thanks for the video!

I have a 2014 Sportster "48" which I bought new. It's my 3rd. Sportster since 1964. I tend to keep them a long time! First thing I did was to switch the peanut tank to a 4.5 gal. fuel tank with airbrushed ghosting and flames from Drakes air brushing in Huntington Beach, Calif.. Vance and Hines short shot staggered pipes, Bates style solo springer saddle and H/D Screaming Eagle heavy breather air intake system and a stage 1 download and computer remapping. It is spooky fast. Been 5 years and 10,000 miles since purchased and not one problem .

Hi from the UK. Love my 2018 883 Iron and this video has shown in the clearest detail other choices among the Sportster models. If I change, probably will not as my 83 is staged and already goes like the clappers, I now know which alternative I would choose. It would be the Roadster for me after having had the benefit of your input. Well done from a lifelong biker (I'm 68) and I shall continue to watch your productions with great interest.

Ah yes the good old 48, better known as the super model of the Harley range. Beautiful to look at, gorgeous build, firm big back and front tires and amazing to ride. Also, the bike that will cost the most to get going as you will be spending a lot on refueling her. Laughed when he said "the perfect bike for around town" haha, yeah cause you will definitely drop that kind of money to drive around town. Nah, I prefer my Sportster Roadster 883cc 2016 model. One of the last ones to be imported here in South Africa. 1 of only 4 still available of the 2016 range. Short distance, long distance, around town or driving across country, never has she ever given me any problems. Only had to get her a better paint job as the racing stripe that came with her looked like a 7 year old did it. Besides that, quick, stable and very comfortable. Not to mention corners are just a treat.

I had a xl 1200 low for a few years before I traded up for a softail. Had it set up with the club style look. I actually liked the sportster more than the softail. Ended up getting rid of the softail as well. Currently in between bikes

I've been riding 45 years I bought a 883 and 2020 brand new I have that thing today and it is the funnest bike I've ever ridden in a very very long time and my insurance is only $48 a month

I swapped a Yamaha Warrior 1700 to a Roadster. The Roadster is 200lbs lighter, 2 ft shorter, and has almost the same power. It drinks less gas as well. It flicks - loves curves and turns. Nimble!

Too late, already have the one you didn’t include, the Roadster. 😎. Nice ride, although I fitted forward controls. Now much more comfortable for someone that’s 6’2”. Also changed out the seat. Lucky Dave’s so much more comfortable after 45min.

They should have emulated the very early Sportsters. I pushed far too many AMF bikes to ever see those logos on a bike again. The only bike from that era that was cool was the XLCR 1000 cafe racer. The Sportster was created to compete with the lightweight British twins, hence the small tank and unit construction.

I noticed that all of the custom Sportsters that were shown, after the custom Roadster, were Evo ('86-'03) Sportsters. You also showed a big twin bike, as if it were a Sporty. I don't know that I've seen a '04 and up Sportster made into a chopper. That would be interesting to see. I would like to see if the oil tank and electrical components cover would be changed out. The Roadster is actually pretty nice looking, though.

I find dealers tend to push you away from test riding bikes if you're not prepared to pull the trigger on it right then and there.

I did not like the roadster when I test drove it. It was awkward with mid controls and having to reach forward for the handlebars. I ended up getting the superlow. I'm 5'11". Superlow is extremely comfortable and easy to control.

You should do similar comparison videos for the Softail and touring lines too. IMHO the Roadstar would make a good scrambler, some dirt bike bars, knobby tires, high mount exhaust.

Nice vidja if you are looking to do any engine work I would suggest the 883 and put on the 1200 kit from harley it will be faster than the regular 1200 since the kit was designed by Eric buell for his race bikes.. or the s&s kit is a good one as well

Not entirely correct, it will have quicker acceleration due to the different gearing of the 883 but will therefore have a lower top speed and run at higher RPM at highway speed.

@@Draknareth ok I should have said to could make more hp I've had alot of drag racers swear by this since most of them use the 883 as a practice slash fun bike at the track and I believe all the sportsters have a 5 speed gear box but I'm not sure it would depend on what the use of the bike would be...

David Kelim they do all have a 5 speed box but the ratios are different on the 883’s to the 1200’s.

I think the Sportster is the best Harley if you want to build a canyon carver. The Dyna might have more of a reputation as of late. But the Sportster is better setup for it imo. Also unless that is a Sportster frame @18:25 that’s definitely a Dyna.

Great video. I think all of the Sportsters are excellent and the engine has got to be one of the greatest to ever roll on two wheels. I like the original concept of the Sportster competing with British Sportbikes so make mine the Roadster. Highly recommended for the ease of use and most importantly the simplicity and greatly reduced maintenance. On the Sportster, it's not re-imagined retro or a tribute but 100% pure and the real thing.

I went with the 48 because I just absolutely love the bobber look, but every 60 miles I have to stop for gas.

I got the iron xl1200ns and I freaking love it. I get alot of compliments on it . I chose the twistsd cherry color because it is so nice. Thanks for the vids.

One thing, foot controls. Forwards or Mids could be a make or break for a lot of people.

I just found out the new Sportster Engine, now 32 years old, is being totally replaced by a liquid cooled 1250 cc motor. Euro 5 certified motor for global sales.

Stupid question but why isn’t Harley offering quads, side by sides, mopeds, and anything with a motor. Why are they frozen to the big bikes for why not diversify. Love my 2004 Sportster Roadster.

Man a sportster can take you across country with no problem and if I wanted comfort i will drive a truck and if i want even more comfort i will fly and if i want even more comfort i will stay home and watch TV about traveling.

Pick which one you like better visually. Of course the 883 is going to be slower. But you've only got 5 gears in the sportster. You'll have more fun modifying either one the way you like it than how fast it is.

If I had to choose between the current sportster models, I'd get a roadster. If I had the money and free choice I'd grab a 2003 1200 and drop a 1275 kit with cams, heads, carb, and 6-speed gearset.

I wish that HD would have brought back the Nightster instead of introducing the Iron 1200. While I do really like the styling of the Iron 1200, I loved that the Nighsters maintained that same murdered out, heavy metal kind of look that the Iron 883 has.

Not to mention that the 883 Custom, Standard and Hugger were all amazing bikes that shared a ton of parts. It’s too bad that now you’re stuck between the Superlow and Iron in the 883 department.

I love the Sportster. I currently own a 03 1200 custom. But God they need to get rid of the wide front tire, it ruins the look of the bike.

I agree with you. The narrow wheel on the custom just fit better. Spokes are harder to upkeep but just looks better.

Laced wheels a great cause they're typically cheaper to repair. hit a pothole bend the rim, spend the 80 bucks for a new rim and 160 to true it unless you teach yourself how to do it

I have a question that no one seems to have an answer to and I’m hoping you might. If I go in and order a new 883 and want the older 2016 tank with the Harley Davidson and Eagle below. Can they customize that for the new 2019 model?
