The Harley Power Secret That Can Be Money Well Spent or Saved

The Harley power secret isn't something hidden and rarely thought about, is a larger throttle body and intake manifold the key? We are always looking for a quick easy power upgrade but we don't want to throw good money away on parts we don't need. More air means more power but the truth is the engine can only pump so much air as it is limited by its cylinder bore size. Depending on which engine you have a new air intake can be very beneficial, especially on a Milwaukee 8. But not every Harley needs a larger throttle body, stock displacement Twin Cams and really anything under 120 cubic inches isn't going to net much gain for the money spent. The Harley power secret over 120 cubic inches may be the throttle body but no matter what it always comes back to the cam.

Would you invest in a larger throttle body and air intake manifold or just have your stock parts ported?

Back in 1974, I bought a used 72 Sporty, ironhead of course...I tried a few 'trick' intake/carb deals...not much to talk about, I went to a good shop that did only motors for Harleys...guy said, the best money you spend will be a cam/s...I did it myself in an hour in my apartment parking area. Good improvement, no grinding/porting the cast iron intake, or splitting the cases..., But later, I wanted some more power, so I got a 4-1/2 stroker kit from S&S...now I had a 74 inch Sporty, pretty much happy with that, only real issue was short piston life, but I could still change out the cyls/pistons in my parking area, a couple hours...what I eventually did was buy a spare set of cylinders and pistons...honed, ring gap set...easy install. I found the James gaskets to be very good, they are also the only brand that fits my 46 Knuckle very well...Bike ran best with the old stock Bendix carb too... I lived in southern California near the coast, so the cool weather was nice, no real overheating...except slogging along on the L.A. freeway 'parking lot'...

cam lift/duration, port size/efficiency as well as exhaust also influence how much air a given engine can move. Agree though that just putting a bigger and "better" AC or throttle body isn't necessarily going to help much, all else being equal.

You get some high compression and good ported flowed heads and a throttle body will make a difference there too.

Naw and it really don’t make sense and I’ve seen throttle body’s actually hurt power but your still can only get out so much air to begin with it seems like it used to be of how the air was going in like the Venturi methods that some air set up’s used u really don’t see much like that

A cam(s) is the best bang for the buck in terms of horsepower and torque gain for the money. I also wouldn't spend the money on aftermarket heads, but rather find someone who knows what they are doing, port and polish the factory cylinder heads. I have found with carbs, throttle bodies make sure they are matched with the engine size right. Some guys will put too big a carb on a smaller motor, and while they may gain some top end hp they lose too much on the lower end if they go to big.
@HogheadBill
@HogheadBill 2 года назад
great vid ... but the end point is when you got into cams... an engine will only make X amount of power based on how much air/fuel you can stuff in it.. larger cam(s) = more horsepower/ torque numbers equals biggest bang for the buck, the longer you hang the valve open the more air/fuel you can stuff in it , intake and injector size only really comes into play at high rpm for v twins, and the dyno numbers don't lie. anyone who knows about engine building, be it V twins or V 8's will tell you the same thing, the key to it all is finding the right cam profile for your application, like you said, the stock throttle body/ injector is more than enough until you get into the 120 cubic inch range and above, thats when you need a larger fuel supply and at that point is just becomes about bragging rights, thats my opinion. keep up the good work.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
Thank you, I appreciate it! Totally agree, there just comes a point in the cubic inches where it's bragging rights. I've seen some 95's lay down some horsepower and torque right inline with the big inch motors.
@HogheadBill
@HogheadBill 2 года назад
@@GixxerFoo you are right about 95's and stroked 96's cranking out large numbers on the dyno, but then you start getting into reliability issues, because of heat and I'm pretty sure you talked about that in another video, it's like when this new shop opened up just outside of where I live and he was having an open house, buddy showing off his in-house dyno and machine shop and starts bragging about how he can tune a stock 96 to over 100 hp.. he had about 3 guys on the hook.. and I just asked him if he was talking about doing a stage 2 or 3 to a 96. he said nope just stock with the existing ecu and internals. I just rolled my eyes and walked out the door. There's a sucker born every min, don't know if any of those 3 bought the kool-aid or not. Not even sure if he's still in business. I kinda stumbled on to your videos, and I like what you have to say with the no real bullshit approach, tell it like it is looking forward to your next series. Ride safe. Then there's been the part here and there that had to be replaced. Hunerd dollar here, hunerd dollar there, and, and one of the owners said he thought I needed compression releases. I'm not throwing any more $$$ at it. It was good stock. Not now. Think I'll get me a Evo and call it a day because my clock is ticking so fast on my frame that I just want to putt around and enjoy some good ol' simplicity because I'm tired and burnt out from all the horse💩. Cams are the way to go. At one time I had a raked / dropped pro street Road Star with a bored / cammed motor and a large throttle body. That thing was a fire breathing monster compared to my bone stock 03 Fatboy I have now. It was very unreliable due to all of the "customization" work done to it (I bought it that way for next to nothing). While I do miss that kind of insane horse power, my HD is extremely reliable.

Automotive have been using plastic intakes for years, so I don't 100% believe the perceived future reliability issues with the composite intake on the HD
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
Automotive engines are also water cooled and don't experience the extreme head temperatures you see on a air cooled Harley. There's really no air flow to speak of in between the cylinders and the fuel tank traps a lot of heat in that area. Head temperatures can realistically easily exceed 300 degress.
@davidmitchel5285
@davidmitchel5285 2 года назад
@@GixxerFoo They are water cooled (except my Corvair :-)), but also under a hood and often in the middle of a V of cylinder heads and engine valley. I know the composite will not last forever, but I am optimistic based on the lack of evidence from the automotive side after a couple of decades. Also, there is a benefit of very low thermal conduction to the air charge. Only time will tell! Great video BTW - cams are where all the magic starts, and everything needs to play well together.

No. A throttle body and intake will really not do anything on a stock engine because the fuel and air still waits at the closed intake valve until it is ready to be used. Back in the day that was the culture in cars. If I only put that Holley four barrel and intake I will have a race car mentality. The words on the box always say increase in performance. It is kind of vague. Atmospheric pressure is still about 14 lb. per square inch at sea level. The intake mechanical part has to change to allow more in when the valve opens and even then you are limited by the piston suction when the valve opens. There is always forcing air and fuel in over atmospheric pressure on a stock engine. For a factory engine power increase it was always valves, camshaft and compression. This is another great video and honest right up front but I think Harley would not be happy watching your content as it ruins their sales to the uninformed.

It depends a lot upon how much displacement you have, and how much cam you're using. If you're putting mild cams in a 96 Twin Cam, then, no, you don't need a bigger throttle body. If you're putting a big bore kit and big cams on a 103, then, yes, it's time to go to a bigger throttle body and intake. With EFI, erring on the large side doesn't really hurt much, unless you do something entirely stupid.

Beyond that it's okay to open the motor but be willing to open your wallet and not cut corners. That's where it's get expensive, but it's more expensive to cut corners and shell a motor. The M8 was a game changer with heads that actually breath even in stock trim. Hot rodding any IC engine will uncover constraints to more power and torque. We are dealing with demand VS supply of air as it relates to throttle bodies. All of these throttle bodies potentially are limited further by the spigot outlet size dictated by head inlet size . Anybody can observe a drop in MAP pressure at maximum rpm on a dyno run and know positively their throttle body is in the way of achieving maximum power. How much? Is the expenditure worth the result? People think the throttle body is a brick wall to horsepower and "needed". Truth be told we are dealing with subtilties. A soft wall in most cases.

447 SE cam with stupid Harley tuner Did go with the 55mm aluminum intake bc why not. 92/110tq I’d have preferred a 30/30, PV, catless head pipes But first new bike so wanna keep the warranty. I will say the thing lopes like a damn 30/30 and pulls hard af No cap I dig it more than the 468/PV tune I had on my last bike. Miss the catless headpipes tho. I was told since my bike is a 2023 the EPA Regs are even worse and the Harley SEPST won’t be able to tune catless headpipes and a larger cam.. it would ride like ass. it is all about air/ fuel mix. you determine what cfm youre engine moves at wot and build your intake to get the best air fuel mix in a idle to wot . just a beter air fuel mix with feul vapor and not dropplets of fuel duw to no manifold velocity. smaller is sometimes better. velocity gets forgotten about .that's why a warm engine runs better and doesn't smell like raw fuel. the heat creates a vaporizing effect on the fuel air mix when it isn't too rich.

When I told my mechanic i mainly ride in the 2500 - 3500 rpm range and wanted more power when passing slower vehicles, he recommended Wood 555 cams in my 2010 FLHTCU with a stage one TC96, dialed-in with a TTS tuner, and I felt a huge gain in power. I have not heard you or anyone else on YT recommend this cam. Are there some issues with this cam and tuner? Congratulations for the video. I have 3 questions: still wanting to replace the plastic manifold with a CNC aluminum one...First of all, I'm always very interested in low and medium rpm torque (in fact, for stage II I chose the WOOD PERFORMANCE 22X cam and not the new 22XE). So, having made these essential premises, I have the follows 2 bikes ( both my 2023) : 1) I have a FATBOBB 114 with stage 2 ( Wood Performance CAM M8-22X - Dr Jackil -MrHide Slip on-BMC air filter) , do you recommend a 55mm or a 58 mm (HPi type) manifold ? 2) I also have a Street Glide ST117 (my 2023) with Jackpot pipe and screamin eagle slip on: do you recommend a 55mm or a 58 mm? 3) among the various 55 mm (S&S-Fuel Moto-Revolution Performance, etc) have you made a comparison video with a bench test?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 23 часа назад
Larger throttle bodies from what I have seen are of minimal effectiveness unless you are running a full blow big inch race motor wide open. Manifolds are a different story, replacing those plastic ones with an aftermarket aluminum one has great benefits in smoother air flow. Not to mention professional throttle body porting does a lot for engines under 120 inches. The larger throttle bodies I am just not sold on for the cost vs gain.

😆 the dealer really said that?! When it comes to Screamin Eagle cams it's not worth it, if you're under warranty and want to keep it I would wait to add a cam. Here's a video on some M8 cams ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--7xrw--tY2c.html, I did it on the 114 but it's very comparable to what it would do in your 117. These horsepower builds are definitely interesting and make for some fun bikes but I'm wondering if anybody is building anything for the other end of the spectrum. At different points in my life I have used motorcycles for daily commuters. While the bike I have now is not the most fuel efficient due to power modifications I've been seriously thinking about getting a second bike and modding it the other way. Be super interested in someone taking an 883 and modding it for further fuel efficiency. Maybe lightning it up, adjusting the mixture where it's still safe for the engine but burns less fuel, maybe some other tuning mods too. I wonder if the stock setup is the most efficient or if there are mods to make it even more efficient. Things like that would be interesting to see someone go that direction.

All questions are welcome any where and anytime, that's not normal though. There's only a couple places it can leak if you're seeing oil on the cylinder fins. Excellent video again and one that really made me see the difference on Stage IV SE vs just the Woods cam. As I understood the video, the StageIV would put out less HP/Tq than the Woods XE? If this is correct, the difference in install at the dealer (7K quoted local dealer) vs non dealer shop install of Woods cam may be huge! Now, I have an M8 under 1k miles, thinking on the woods cam (and a local old guy tech independent shop swears it is a very good product) but , if I go that route, is it a good idea to install the aluminum intake? And since I have already free flowing intake and rinehart slip ons; would I need anything else ,other than the Power Vision and a "good tuner"? Thanks!
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
Wood's 22XE is absolutely right up there on par with the SE Stage 4. The Screamin Eagle cams really hold everything back in their kits, but they are also designed to be emissions compliant too.
