This talk introduces the audience to the Aramaic-speaking (Syriac) Christian world of the Near East, which gifted the Orthodox Church with one of its most renowned and celebrated authors - St. Ephrem the Syrian. After briefly discussing the origins of the Church in the regions of Syria and Mesopotamia, the talk will move on to examine the person and writings of St. Ephraim. This lecture will focus on the various styles of composition that he used, the various genres of his writings, and his role as the Malpana (ܡܠܦܢܐ) - the Teacher of the schools and of the Church.
